Anti-Flag sont de retour avec un nouvel album pour commencer en beauté cette année 2023. Intitulé Lies They Tell Our Children, il sera disponible dès vendredi via Spinafarm Records. Cette nouvelle sortie, déjà la treizième du groupe de Pittsburgh en Pennsylvanie, va-t-elle nous prouver une nouvelle fois que le punk politique des américains est toujours autant d’actualité?

L’intro de l’album, « They Sold Everything », permet d’entrée à Justin Sane (chant/guitare) et Chris#2 (chant/basse) de mêler leurs voix pour nous offrir ce qui as toujours fait le sel de cette formation, des paroles engagées tout en étant calibrées pour nous faire chanter en chœur. Viens ensuite le premier single de cet album, « Modern Meta Medicine », où Jesse Leach de Killswitch Engage vient poser sa voix sur un titre entre punk et métal lui convenant parfaitement. Les riffs de Justin Sane et Chris Head sont plus lourds, et viennent trancher avec ce qu’on a l’habitude d’entendre venant du groupe.
Viennent ensuite « Laugh. Cry. Smile. Die. » et « The Fight Of Our Lives », avec les apparitions de Shane Told de Silverstein dans la première et de Tim Mcilrath de Rise Against et Brian Baker de Bad Religion dans la deuxième. Dans les deux cas les bonnes ondes dégagées par les compostions viennent contrebalancer les messages forts des paroles. On n’en n’attends pas moins du groupe de Pittsburgh, et encore une fois c’est très réussi!
« Imperialism » vient donner à Pat Thetic une nouvelle occasion de nous montrer que ses rythmiques sont absolument imparables et déclencheront des pits très rapidement lors de la tournée. Le titre de ce morceau n’a pas besoin d’être précisé, la critique y est déjà présente. La très belle découverte de ce titre est la voix de Ashrita Kumar de Pinkshift, qui colle parfaitement à la composition! Un titre qui aura clairement une place de choix sur les setlists (et en espérant que Pinkshift soient de la partie). Le titre suivant est d’une joie de vivre folle et possède des chœurs qui restent instantanément en tête, mais la force de « Victory Or Death (We Gave ‘em Hell) » est d’avoir comme invité de marque Campino, le chanteur des superstars punk allemandes Die Toten Hosen! Peu connus hors des pays germanophones, ce groupe est clairement une des têtes d’affiche les plus connues d’Allemagne et entendre Campino chanter en anglais est un pur bonheur. Les voix des trois chanteurs se mêlent parfaitement et on a là un des titres les plus forts de Anti-Flag, qui rejoindra sans aucun souci la liste des classiques de la formation.
Après le très bon « The Hazardous », le groupe invite le chanteur folk Tré Burt, pour un titre un peu plus calme mais toujours aussi marquant. Et encore une fois le choix de l’invité tape totalement juste, et il en est de même pour « Nvrevr » où Stacey Dee de Bad Cop / Bad Cop est dans une forme olympique. Il reste ensuite un titre au groupe pour nous remettre une dernière couche de paroles politiques clairement encrées dans l’actualité. Avec « Only In My Head » le quatuor américain nous envoie une dernière décharge d’énergie punk, clairement salvatrice dans ce monde infiniment troublé.
Comme toujours Anti-Flag frappent fort et juste avec ce nouvel album. Quasi trois ans jour pour jour après l’excellent 20/20 Vision, le groupe revient avec un Lies They Tell Our Children qui montre qu’ils en ont encore beaucoup sous le pied. Les morceaux reflètent parfaitement le tumulte de l’actualité et le sentiment qui peut nous envahir devant les injustices grandissantes. Anti-Flag combinent toujours aisément musique puissante et sujets forts avec en bonus, cette fois-ci, une belle brochette d’invités qui apportent chacun leur univers musical dans un album qui en devient très varié. Une vraie belle réussite pour un groupe qui a toujours sû rester droit dans ses bottes aussi bien musicalement que au niveau des sujets abordés.

Anti-Flag are back with a new album to start this year 2023. Entitled Lies They Tell Our Children, it will be available on Friday via Spinafarm Records. Will this new release, the thirteenth of the band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, prove once again that the political punk of the Americans is still as relevant as ever?

The intro of the album, « They Sold Everything », allows Justin Sane (vocals/guitar) and Chris#2 (vocals/bass) to mix their voices to offer us what has always been the salt of this formation, engaged lyrics while being calibrated to make us sing in chorus. Then comes the first single of this album, « Modern Meta Medicine », where Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage comes to put his voice on a track between punk and metal that suits him perfectly. The riffs of Justin Sane and Chris Head are heavier, and come to contrast with what we are used to hear from the band.
Next is « Laugh. Cry. Smile. Die. » and « The Fight Of Our Lives », with appearances by Shane Told of Silverstein in the first and Tim Mcilrath of Rise Against and Brian Baker of Bad Religion in the second. In both cases, the good waves released by the compositions come to counterbalance the strong messages of the lyrics. We expect nothing less from the band from Pittsburgh, and once again it’s very successful!
« Imperialism » comes to give Pat Thetic another opportunity to show us that his rhythms are absolutely unstoppable and will trigger pits very quickly on the tour. The title of this track does not need to be specified, the review is already there. The very nice discovery of this track is the voice of Ashrita Kumar from Pinkshift, which fits perfectly with the composition! A track that will clearly have a place of choice on the setlists (and hoping that Pinkshift will be there). The next track is a crazy joy of life and has choruses that stay in your head instantly, but the strength of « Victory Or Death (We Gave ’em Hell) » is to have as a guest of honour Campino, the singer of German punk superstars Die Toten Hosen! Little known outside of German-speaking countries, this band is clearly one of the most famous headliners in Germany and to hear Campino sing in English is a pure joy. The voices of the three singers blend perfectly and we have here one of the strongest tracks of Anti-Flag, which will join the list of the classics of the band without any concern.
After the very good « The Hazardous », the band invites the folk singer Tré Burt, for a track a little bit calmer but still as striking. And once again the choice of the guest is totally right, and it’s the same for « Nvrevr » where Stacey Dee from Bad Cop / Bad Cop is in an olympic form. There is then a track left to the band to give us a last layer of political lyrics clearly inked in the current events. With « Only In My Head » the American quartet sends us a last discharge of punk energy, clearly saving us in this infinitely troubled world.
As always, Anti-Flag hits hard and right with this new album. Almost three years to the day after the excellent 20/20 Vision, the band comes back with a Lies They Tell Our Children which shows that they still have a lot under their feet. The songs perfectly reflect the tumult of the current events and the feeling that can invade us in front of the growing injustices. Anti-Flag always combine easily powerful music and strong subjects with, as a bonus, this time, a nice bunch of guests who bring each their musical universe in an album that becomes very varied. A real success for a band that has always been able to stay straight in its boots both musically and in terms of the subjects it deals with.
