En avril 2021, une toute nouvelle formation faisait son apparition dans la scène Française métalcore, et pas des moindres puisqu’on retrouvait Aaron Matts (ex-Betraying The Martyrs), Quentin Godet (Kadinja), Luka Garotin (Earth Trip), Nicolas Delestrade (Novelists FR et My Hidden Sin) et Arnaud Verrier (Uneven Structure, Zuul FX). Un casting au top, signé chez Out Of Line, pour une revisite totale du style. S’en suivait en novembre la sortie de leur premier EP, Downer Pt1, puis une tournée des festivals comme le Motocultor où ils y ont joué deux sets. Ce vendredi 13 janvier, nous les retrouvons pour un nouvel EP, Downer Pt2 qui annonce du lourd. Préparez vous, ça va tout retourner.

On débute l’écoute par le single « yenta » déjà sorti depuis plusieurs semaines. Les percussions métalliques vous embarquent instantannément dans l’univers du groupe. La formation est loin de s’être calmé et nous offre un breakdown à nous en casser les genoux dans le pit. Les guitares sont totalement distordues et offre des sonorités très industrielles. « Traumadoll » se distingue par cette vitesse de chant. Aaron s’essaye au chant un peu plus rapé sans délaisser ses screams légendaires. Ce chant sera le point le plus marquant du morceau et continue dans la lignée de fusion des styles que l’on trouve de plus en plus dans le nu-métalcore. La fusion continue avec le morceau « rls » et sa mélodie très trap. Certain passage me font clairement penser à des titres d’emo-rap, où encore à ce que Landmvrks nous ont offert sur leur dernier album (Ten56. ont notamment ouvert pour Landmvrks à Paris en 2022). Le titre se veut un peu plus émotif que les autres, mais je n’arrive pas à m’y accrocher du tout.

Quelques secondes plus tard, la puissance de ten56. est de retour avec le puissant « saiko ». Le tempo du morceau est très hardcore, et je reste toujours aussi impressionné par la puissance de la batterie de Arnaud. Il faudra bien un petit interlude de 47 secondes avec « intruder » pour se reposer. Quoi que, sirène de police en fond, scratching de vinyle, ça ne présage pas beaucoup de calme. Je pense instantanément aux mélodies hip hop d’il y a 20 ans. Ce morceau fait une ouverture vers le morceau « masque » à la perfection. Ouvrez le pit, ça va tabasser fort ! Les sonorités de ten56 sont désormais reconnaissable, un poil répétitive, mais toujours aussi puissante. « Ender » clôture cet album par un breakdown gargantuesque, on est totalement essouflé et on ne peut que se dire qu’on est pas prêt pour entendre ça en live. En tout cas, il faudra de la préparation.

Ten56. nous proposent donc un deuxième EP en parfaite continuité avec le part1. On plonge de plus en plus profond dans la fusion des styles avec l’arrivée des sonorités trap et le chant rap de Aaron. Alors que le premier EP ne m’avait pas convaincu en studio (mais m’avait totalement fait adhérer en live), je suis un peu plus captivé par celui-ci.

In April 2021, a brand new formation appeared in the French metalcore scene, and not the least since we found Aaron Matts (ex-Betraying The Martyrs), Quentin Godet (Kadinja), Luka Garotin (Earth Trip), Nicolas Delestrade (Novelists FR and My Hidden Sin) and Arnaud Verrier (Uneven Structure, Zuul FX). A top casting, signed at Out Of Line, for a total revisiting of the style. In November, they released their first EP, Downer Pt1, and then toured festivals like Motocultor where they played two sets. This Friday, January 13th, we find them again for a new EP, Downer Pt2, which announces some heavy stuff. Get ready, it will turn everything upside down.

We begin the listening by the single « yenta » already released since several weeks. The metallic percussions embark you instantly in the universe of the group. The formation is far from having calmed down and offers us a breakdown to break our knees in the pit. The guitars are totally distorted and offer very industrial sounds. « Traumadoll » is distinguished by this speed of singing. Aaron tries to sing a little more ragged without abandoning his legendary screams. This song will be the most striking point of the track and continues in the line of fusion of styles that we find more and more in the nu-metalcore. The fusion continues with the track « rls » and its very trap melody. Some passages clearly remind me of emo-rap tracks, or even of what Landmvrks offered us on their last album (Ten56. have notably opened for Landmvrks in Paris in 2022). The track is a bit more emotional than the others, but I can’t get hooked at all.

A few seconds later, the power of ten56. is back with the powerful « saiko ». The tempo of the track is very hardcore, and I am still impressed by the power of Arnaud’s drums. It will take a small interlude of 47 seconds with « intruder » to rest. However, police siren in the background, scratching of vinyl, it does not presage much calm. I instantly think of the hip hop melodies of 20 years ago. This track opens to the « mask » track perfectly. Open the pit, it’s going to kick ass! The sounds of ten56 are now recognizable, a bit repetitive, but still powerful. « Ender » closes this album with a gargantuan breakdown, we are totally out of breath and we can only say to ourselves that we are not ready to hear this live. In any case, it will take some preparation.

Ten56. offer us a second EP in perfect continuity with the part1. We dive deeper and deeper into the fusion of styles with the arrival of trap sounds and Aaron’s rap vocals. While the first EP didn’t convince me in studio (but made me totally adhere in live), I am a little more captivated by this one.
