We continue this weekend full of concerts with a date that we did not expect and that appeared late in the schedule of January. Year Of No Light are back in the Lille metropolis after a concert last October in Tourcoing. For this beginning of the year, it’s The Black Lab that welcomes the post metal band from Bordeaux. Already the evening was going to be beautiful, but it was without counting on the presence of Aluk Todolo and Sordide to complete this beautiful poster. I might as well say it from the start, the bands have suffered the concentration of metal concerts in Lille this Saturday night, but a faithful audience has nevertheless made the trip.
We start this evening with the black metal of the Rouen-based band Sordide. We had discovered the band at the Tyrant Fest of 2022, but it was time for us to go back and have a look at what the band has to offer. The entrance of the musicians is done without frills and we go directly to the heart of the matter: a precise black metal, often very effective and with perfectly audible vocals. We can therefore fully enjoy the writing of Nehluj, which acenes lyrics screamingnthe truth on the current world and its problems. We are clearly in front of a band that knows where it goes musically and it is a pleasure to listen to. The public is attentive and takes full advantage of each note. We will remain struck by the power of a track like « La Peur Du Noir ». The band ends its set with the magnificent « Vers Jamais » which clearly leaves us speechless.
The power of Sordide lies in its interpretation, and this concert was clearly no exception to the rule. The first good impression of last November is confirmed and it is high time for us to go and have a look at their discography. An evening that starts in the most beautiful way!
We quickly go on with Aluk Todolo! And the first thing that strikes is the presence of a very big light bulb in the middle of the stage, the only lighting of their set for this evening. This decoration already plunges us in the mystical universe of the Grenoble’s musicians, and we can’t wait to discover this group of which we know nothing while arriving in the room. The public seems to know well the discography of the group because a big part of the present public rushes in front of the stage. From the first track the verdict falls, we are facing a band in a state of grace! Each note of the trio comes to find a particular resonance in us. Their indescribable style clearly puts us in full sight, and the power of the game of the musicians is to be greeted. The audience of Lille doesn’t lose a crumb and is carried by pieces of a crazy evocative force. No need of words to have a personal idea of what each title conveys. Visually it is majestic of beauty in the light of this unique bulb connected to the signal of the guitar. The set goes by at full speed and we would have been tempted by one or two more tracks.
Aluk Todolo clearly gave us a gigantic slap tonight! We didn’t know the band before entering the room and we’ll come out totally turned around by a set of an indisputable quality, which will have been able to mix multiple influences in the service of a music that we never get tired of listening to. Go see them as soon as possible, we promise you an experience that will remain engraved in you!
We end the evening with Year Of No Light, that we were eager to see live for the first time. And as much to say that the first piece of the set put us full of sight. « Hierophant » transports us with the three guitars of Jérôme Alban, Pierre Anouilh and Shiran Kaïdine who mix with each one their well distict sound for a set of riffs of an incredible force. On the drums Bobby alternates between soft parts and drum bludgeoning. He is then joined by Mathieu Mégemont, who leaves his keyboards for a small set of drums, and both of them offer us rhythms that totally turn the audience. We are in front of a post metal bulldozer so much the group destroys us by the power of its compositions. The short setlist, leaves to each title the occasion to each member of the group to illustrate himself fully. The listening is religious and the applause will be proportional to the musical mandals that we take at each title. The band doesn’t leave us any respite and « Interdit Aux Vivants, Aux Morts et Aux Chiens » arrives to give a layer of post metal worthy of the greatest. We wonder what the band will offer us to close this evening, and it will be the Dantesque bass lines of « Stella Rectrix » that will give us a last glimpse of what this band can have under the foot.
This concert of Year Of No Light, is clearly the first big slap of the year. We were waiting to see this band for a long time and we had an unforgettable time! We can only salute the performance and invite you to go see the band as soon as possible. The audience was stunned by a majestic set from start to finish and left The Black Lab delighted with the evening spent in the company of three bands, each more talented than the last.
Sympa le report ! Petite précision concernant Year of no light, je pense qu’il y a une petite confusion Bertrand Sébenne n’était pas présent (comme au grand mix d’ailleurs) mais remplacé par Bobby ! (il a été présenté comme ça). Et Mathieu Mégémon restait à la batterie. 😉
