Direction Paris et la boulevard Voltaire pour une date que les fans attendent depuis longtemps. Maintes fois reportée, la date de Karnivool et The Ocean au Bataclan est enfin là! Autant vous dire que le public parisien s’est déplacé en masse pour cette date, et j’ai bien évidemment sauté dans un TGV pour rejoindre la fête!

Déjà beaucoup de monde dans la salle lorsque les allemands de The Ocean arrivent sur la scène de cette salle mythique. Ils arrivent clairement en terrain conquis puisque dès le premier titre le public de la fosse reprend « Triassic » en choeur. Tout le groupe est au sommet de sa forme, et Loïc Rossetti (chant), le français de la bande nous remercie de mettre autant l’ambiance pour cette date tant attendue. Il est difficile de ne pas se laisser happer par le post métal du groupe qui album après album arrive encore à nous surprendre. On est ravis de retrouver des classiques intemporels tels que « Mesopelagic : Into the Uncanny », et de les entendre autant mis en valeur par le niveau des musiciens. Bien évidemment chaque titre est une nouvelle démonstration du mélange habile entre douceur et puissance chère à la formation allemande. Pour le titre « Holocene », c’est l’heure des chaises musicales: Paul Seidel (batterie) vient nous enchanter avec une performance vocale impressionnante, Peter Voigtmann (claviers) passe à la batterie et Loïc reprend les claviers. Ces changements donnent une confirmation du talent qui parcoure le groupe dans son ensemble. Puis arrive après 45 minutes déjà l’heure du dernier titre! Mais pour celui-ci après avoir repris leurs places respectives les musiciens partent dans un dernier coup de force. Robin Staps et David Ramis Åhfeldt (guitares) et Mattias Hägerstrand (basse) envoient des riffs et rythmiques parfaitement maîtrisées avant que Loïc viennent littéralement monter sur le public pour une dernière dose de chant hurlé bien puissant comme il faut. Le groupe quitte la scène largement applaudi par tout le public du Bataclan en ayant prouvé une nouvelle fois qu’ils sont un des meilleurs groupes live actuels. Une performance unique qui nous laisse bien chauds pour la suite!
Karnivool arrivent sur la scène du Bataclan devant une salle prête à vivre la tournée des 13 ans de Sound Awake. Le groupe démare son set au son de « C.O.T.E » issue de l’album Themata (2005) et tout le monde par dans une chorale géante. Le chant de Ian Kenny est toujours aussi percutant et vient directement nous cueillir. Les musiciens proposent un prog métal de très grande qualité qui ne prend pas une ride. A chaque titre qui passe la salle monte en température et on sent que les australiens passent une excellente soirée, tout comme nous. Vu que nous sommes dans une tournée anniversaire, le groupe met largement en avant l’album concerné! Quel plaisir d’entendre des versions magistrales de « Simple Boy » ou « All I Know » par exemple. Evidemment les autres albums ne sont pas oubliés, tout comme le dernier single en date « All It Takes » qui ravira tout le public. Certaines parties instrumentales sont elles aussi reprises en chœur par le public! De mon côté le highlight de cette soirée sera le niveau stratosphérique de Steve Judd derrière sa batterie. Quel bonheur de voir des musiciens de ce niveau sur scène. « Umbra » et « Dead Man » restent les titres que je préfère de la formation, et enfin les entendre en live est clairement un superbe cadeau. Après un set d’une qualité indiscutable, boosté par un public totalement impliqué, le groupe quitte la scène au son de « Change ». Mais on le sait, ça n’est pas encore fini! Ils reviennent tous pour deux titres dont le génial « New Day » pour clôturer en beauté cette soirée mémorable. Le groupe sera largement applaudi par tout le public et promet de revenir rapidement en France.
Rares sont les concerts avec une affiche regroupant deux gros noms de la scène post/prog métal et ce soir Karnivool et The Ocean ont montré que les grandes salles sont aussi faites pour leurs formations. Le public du Bataclan a clairement passé une excellente soirée et, de mon côté, je garderais en mémoire cette qualité musicale folle que les groupes ont proposé tout au long de ce concert. On espère revoir les deux formations très vite, avec plein de nouveautés dans leurs besaces.
Heading to Paris and the Boulevard Voltaire for a date that fans have long been waiting for. Many times postponed, the show of Karnivool and The Ocean at the Bataclan is finally here! The Parisian public has come out in droves for this date, and I obviously jumped on a TGV to join the party!
There are already a lot of people in the room when the Germans of The Ocean arrive on the stage of this mythical venue. They clearly arrive on conquered ground as from the first track the audience in the pit starts singing « Triassic ». The whole band is in top form, and Loïc Rossetti (vocals), the frenchman of the band, thanks us for setting the mood for this long awaited date. It’s hard not to get caught up in the band’s post-metal music, which album after album still manages to surprise us. We are delighted to find timeless classics such as « Mesopelagic: Into the Uncanny », and to hear them so enhanced by the level of the musicians. Of course, each track is a new demonstration of the skilful mix between softness and power dear to the German band. For the track « Holocene », it’s time for musical chairs: Paul Seidel (drums) comes to enchant us with an impressive vocal performance, Peter Voigtmann (keyboards) switches to drums and Loïc takes over the keyboards. These changes confirm the talent that runs through the band as a whole. Then, after 45 minutes, it’s time for the last song! But for this one, after having taken their respective places, the musicians leave in a last power move. Robin Staps and David Ramis Åhfeldt (guitars) and Mattias Hägerstrand (bass) send out perfectly controlled riffs and rhythms before Loïc literally climbs on top of the audience for a last dose of powerful screaming vocals. The band leaves the stage to a huge applause from the entire audience of the Bataclan, having proven once again that they are one of the best live bands today. A unique performance that leaves us very excited for the next part of the show!
Karnivool arrive on stage at the Bataclan in front of a room ready to experience Sound Awake‘s 13th anniversary tour. The band start their set to the sound of « C.O.T.E » from the album Themata (2005) and everyone goes into a giant choir. Ian Kenny‘s vocals are as hard-hitting as ever, and they come straight to us. The musicians offer a very high quality prog metal that never gets old. With each track that passes, the room rises in temperature and we feel that the Australians are having an excellent evening, just like us. Since we are on an anniversary tour, the band is putting the album in the spotlight! What a pleasure to hear masterful versions of « Simple Boy » or « All I Know » for example. Of course the other albums are not forgotten, as well as the latest single « All It Takes » which will delight the whole audience. Some of the instrumental parts are also sung along by the audience! For me, the highlight of the evening was the stratospheric level of Steve Judd behind his drums. What a joy to see musicians of this level on stage. « Umbra » and « Dead Man » remain my favourite tracks from the band, and to finally hear them live is clearly a great gift. After a set of indisputable quality, boosted by a totally involved audience, the band leaves the stage to the sound of « Change ». But we know, it’s not over yet! They all come back for two tracks including the brilliant « New Day » to close this memorable evening in beauty. The band will be widely applauded by the whole audience and promises to come back soon in France.
Rare are the concerts with a line-up of two big names in the post/prog metal scene and tonight Karnivool and The Ocean showed that big venues are also made for their bands. The audience of the Bataclan clearly had an excellent evening and, for my part, I will keep in mind the crazy musical quality that the bands offered throughout this concert. We hope to see the two bands again very soon, with lots of new material in their bags.
