Simon Collins et Kelly Nordstrom, musiciens et collaborateurs depuis 18 ans, arrivent en cette année 2023 avec leur nouveau projet emolecule et un premier album concept. Intitulé The Architect, il sera disponible le 10 février prochain via Inside Out Music. Mais alors que vaut ce premier album des deux ex Sound Of Contact?

Le premier titre éponyme nous fait découvrir ce que le duo veut nous proposer avec ce premier effort studio. Les sons électroniques se mêlent aux premières notes de guitare avant l’arrivée de la batterie. Et c’est parti pour une dizaine de minutes de prog rock futuriste. Le peu de paroles est chanté via une voix vocodée qui confirme l’orientation science-fiction de cet album. Puis les voix des deux musiciens se mêlent et renforcent l’immersion. Côté composition on sent que leurs années de pratique dans le rock progressif sont bien présentes et ce premier titre donne un bel aperçu de ce que cet album va pouvoir nous proposer.

On poursuit avec des titres entre pur prog rock et quelque chose de définitivement hors classification. Les compositions sont au service d’une narration fluide qui s’étoffe morceau après morceau. « Mastermind », choisi par le duo comme single de cet album, est une très belle illustration de ce que les deux musiciens cherchent à créer avec ce nouveau projet: un tout qui va toucher les amateurs de musique autant que les fans d’histories de science-fiction bien racontées et inventives.

Les morceaux suivants sont une nouvelle confirmation du talent de compositeurs et d’interprètes de Simon Collins et Kelly Nordstrom. « The Turn » ou « Beyond Belief » sont de vraies pépites bien rock qui n’auront aucun mal à plaire au plus grand nombre. Encore une fois la diversitéest le maître mot dans cet album, avec des morceaux quasi métal et d’autres plus aériens et progressifs dans leur construction rythmique. La dernière partie de l’album vient clôturer l’arc narratif proposé par le duo et le titre « Moments Of Truth » clôt le tout avec une maestria digne des plus grands noms du prog rock, avec en plus selon moi un petite référence à la manière de chanter et conter des histoires de Neal Morse et ça n’est pas pour me déplaire.

emolecule ont, avec The Architect, créer un univers fort qui en plus de se tenir en terme d’histoire racontée, est une démonstration que le prog rock peut toujours se renouveler dans les mains d’artistes accomplis depuis des années. On ne peut que souhaiter le meilleur à ce nouveau projet musical et vous inciter à écouter ce très beau premier album.

Simon Collins and Kelly Nordstrom, musicians and collaborators for the past 18 years, arrive in the year 2023 with their new project emolecule and a first concept album. Entitled The Architect, it will be available on February 10th via Inside Out Music. But what is this first album of the two ex-Sound Of Contact worth?

The eponymous first track shows us what the duo wants to offer us with this first studio effort. The electronic sounds mix with the first guitar notes before the arrival of the drums. And here we go for about ten minutes of futuristic prog rock. The few lyrics are sung via a vocoded voice which confirms the science-fiction orientation of this album. Then the voices of the two musicians blend together and reinforce the immersion. As far as the composition is concerned, we can feel that their years of practice in progressive rock are well present and this first track gives a good idea of what this album will offer us.

We continue with tracks between pure prog rock and something definitely out of classification. The compositions are at the service of a fluid narration that grows stronger track after track. « Mastermind », chosen by the duo as the single of this album, is a very nice illustration of what the two musicians are trying to create with this new project: a whole that will touch music lovers as much as fans of well-told and inventive science-fiction stories.

The following tracks are a further confirmation of Simon Collins and Kelly Nordstrom’s talent as composers and performers. « The Turn » or « Beyond Belief » are real rock nuggets that will have no trouble pleasing most people. Once again, diversity is the key word in this album, with some almost metal tracks and others more aerial and progressive in their rhythmic construction. The last part of the album closes the narrative arc proposed by the duo and the title « Moments Of Truth » closes the whole with a mastery worthy of the greatest names of prog rock, with in addition according to me a small reference to the way of singing and telling stories of Neal Morse and that is not to displease me.

emolecule have, with The Architect, created a strong universe which, in addition to standing up in terms of the story told, is a demonstration that prog rock can always be renewed in the hands of artists who have been accomplished for years. We can only wish the best to this new musical project and encourage you to listen to this beautiful first album.
