Dans ces groupes Français dont nous attendions le retour avec impatience, il y avait Matmatah sans hésitation.  Et comme un remerciement de notre attente, nous avons le plaisir de retrouver le groupe pour un double album intitulé Miscellanées Bissextiles, sorti ce vendredi 03 février 2023 via La Ouache Production / Margipop. Préparez-vous, on est parti pour plus d’une heure d’écoute.

Comme un hommage au grand groupe de rock progressif, le nouvel opus débute par le fantastique morceau « Erlenmeyer » d’une vingtaine de minutes ! Et d’entrée de jeu, on sent que les Bretons sont inspirés et veulent nous en mettre plein la vue. Réelle composition rock, le morceau se scinde en plusieurs actes d’abord mystérieux, avant de s’élancer vers des riffs de guitares à la 70’s qui éclatent comme l’engouement qui se dégage au démarrage d’un concert de rock, jusqu’au troisième acte faisant la belle pare au piano à la Queen. Mais Matmatah, c’est avant tout un groupe n’hésitant pas à mélanger les sonorités, très festive, et on embarque au bout de 15 minutes dans une fête dansante entourée par les instruments Bretons qui ont fait la renommée du groupe il y a 25 ans. Parfait mélange de ce que Matmatah nous ont proposé durant leur carrière, le titre « Erlenmeyer » y était tout trouvé. L’enchainement des morceaux suivants est dans la même optique : explorer les genres, les réinventer et avec brio : « populaire » sera folk, « le rhume des foins » quant à lui sera très rock et fortement marqué par ce rythme soutenu. Connaissez-vous l’hypnagogia ou plutôt l’état hypnagogique ? Il s’agit de ce moment lors vous vous endormez, lorsque vous êtes à la limite de la conscience, mais que vos sens sont encore en éveil. Comme un rêve abstrait, Matmatah nous embarque dans ce sentiment avec douceur et la voix hypnotisante de Stan, qui ne cesse de prendre du grain. Le deuxième disque vient faire un hommage aux origines du groupe par ce titre « Trenkenn Fisel ». Reprenant les chants bretons emblématique de leurs précédents morceaux sous une mélodie tout d’abord électronique, on imagine parfaitement une rétrospective du groupe en image sur des écrans géants lors de leur concert (qu’on espère pouvoir couvrir et vous partager très prochainement). Le morceau vient très vite nous prouver que Matmatah, c’est avant tout du rock, et du prog-rock sur fond de rythmiques sonores bretonnes. Quel pied ! On est prêt à danser en live, peut-être faudrait-il apprendre à danser le fisel d’ici le concert ! Mise à part ces sonorités que l’on reconnait parfaitement, Matmatah n’a jamais caché ses convictions, notamment sur l’album Plates Coutures. L’avenir de cette planète est en danger, nous le savons, et le titre « Obscène Anthropocène » nous invite à faire notre requiem avant cette fin du monde qui semble inévitable. Et comme ils le disent sur « SklogW », on n’est pas sorti des ronces ! Une ambiance à la -M- s’installe sur « la posologie » et cette façon de chanter refera surface sur « coupette ? ». Les français ne se cachent pas de leurs inspirations outre-manche avec deux titres chantés en anglais, dont le très bon « Let’s say it’s alright » en voix-piano qui nous rappelle musicalement la douceur de certains titres de Muse ou les Beatles.

Matmatah nous régalent avec ce double album plus inventif que jamais, explorant les genres avec brio et talent. Album de rock, de prog, de chanson politique, de folk breton. Tout y est pour passer un super moment, et on est désormais sûr et certain que leur prochaine tournée, on ne la loupera pour rien au monde !

In these French groups of which we awaited the return with impatience, there was Matmatah without hesitation. And as a thank you for our wait, we have the pleasure to find the band for a double album entitled Miscellanées Bissextiles, released this Friday, February 03, 2023 via La Ouache Production / Margipop. Get ready, we’re going to listen to it for more than an hour.

As a tribute to the great progressive rock band, the new opus starts with the fantastic twenty minutes long track « Erlenmeyer »! And from the start, we feel that the Breton are inspired and want to show us a lot. Real rock composition, the piece is divided into several acts, mysterious at first, before jumping to 70’s style guitar riffs that explode like the craze that emerges at the beginning of a rock concert, until the third act, with a beautiful piano a la Queen. But Matmatah, it is above all a group not hesitating to mix the sonorities, very festive, and one embarks at the end of 15 minutes in a dancing party surrounded by the Breton instruments which made the fame of the group 25 years ago. Perfect mixture of what Matmatah proposed to us during their career, the title « Erlenmeyer » was quite found there. The sequence of the following tracks is in the same optics: to explore the genres, to reinvent them and with brilliance: « popular » will be folk, « hay fever » as for him will be very rock and strongly marked by this sustained rhythm. Do you know the hypnagogia or rather the hypnagogic state? It is that moment when you fall asleep, when you are at the limit of consciousness, but that your senses are still awake. Like an abstract dream, Matmatah embarks us in this feeling with sweetness and the hypnotizing voice of Stan, which does not cease to take grain. The second disc comes to make a tribute to the origins of the group by this title « Trenkenn Fisel ». Resuming the Breton songs emblematic of their previous tracks under an electronic melody at first, we can perfectly imagine a retrospective of the band in images on giant screens during their concert (that we hope to be able to cover and share with you very soon). The song comes very quickly to prove us that Matmatah, it is above all rock, and prog-rock on bottom of Breton sound rhythmics. What a foot! We are ready to dance live, maybe we should learn to dance the fisel by the concert! Apart from these sounds that we recognize perfectly, Matmatah has never hidden its convictions, especially on the album Plates Coutures. The future of this planet is in danger, we know it, and the title « Obscene Anthropocene » invites us to make our requiem before this end of the world which seems inevitable. And as they say on « SklogW », we’re not out of the woods yet! An atmosphere with -M- settles on « la posologie » and this way of singing will surface again on « coupette? The French don’t hide their inspirations from the united kingdom with two tracks sung in English, including the very good « Let’s say it’s alright » in piano-voice which reminds us musically of the softness of some tracks of Muse or the Beatles.

Matmatah treats us with this double album more inventive than ever, exploring genres with brio and talent. Album of rock, prog, political song, Breton folk. Everything is there to have a great time, and we are now sure that their next tour, we will not miss it for anything!
