Après avoir adoré leur premier album Hands Across The Creek (disponible via The State 51 Conspiracy), il me tardait de voir les anglais d’Hotel Lux en live. L’attente ne fut pas si longue que ça puisque le groupe est de passage à L’Aéronef de Lille, ce mardi 7 février, à peine plus d’une semaine après la sortie de l’album. Et le public lillois s’est déplacé en masse puisque la salle, en configuration club, affiche complet. Le groupe a ajouté que cette date était leur plus grosse headline européenne pour le moment, un fait à mettre au crédit du renommé public lillois. Pour ouvrir la soirée nous partons à la découverte de la musique des rémois de Chester Remington.

C’est parti pour le set de Chester Remington avec le morceau « If Me Answers » et d’entrée de jeu, le groupe nous attrape avec son rock mais rempli d’influences musicales diverses et variées. Chaque musicien de la formation est en grande forme et cherche à attraper le public lillois au vol (de mouette). Musicalement, c’est une vraie découverte qu’on fait ce soir et titre après titre on se laisse emporter par ce que Chester Remington nous propose. « Out There » ou « Call 911 » sont des titres qui font bouger même les plus récalcitrants. D’ailleurs, un grand bravo au groupe pour ce magnifique bruit de sirène d’alerte à la guitare! Le chanteur de la formation bouge littéralement dans tous les sens et est souvent rejoint par son bassiste et le claviériste pour les choeurs. Et lorsque ce dernier devient chanteur principal d’un des titres, ses acolytes font dos au public quelques instants pour lui laisser pleinement la lumière. Le groupe annonce les deux dernières chansons et c’est reparti pour un mélange, rock/post punk/ garage…. du plus bel effet. On ne peut que saluer la performance du groupe qui a su nous mettre en jambes pour l’arrivée de la tête d’affiche, tout en étant une découverte qu’on hésitera pas à retourner voir dès que possible. On vous invite à vous plonger dans le monde rempli de mouettes et de cirés jaunes de Chester Remington.
Il est temps d’accueillir Hotel Lux pour un concert qui s’annonce excellent. Les six musiciens arrivent sur la scène et démarrent en force avec « Common Sense ». La force du groupe réside dans le chant et l’attitude de Lewis Duffin. Le post punk des anglais prend une autre dimension en live et l’enchaînement des premiers titres prouve que on est face à un futur grand groupe du genre. Chaque musicien à toute sa place et on peut clairement saluer la performance de Dillon Home qui toute la soirée alternera entre ses claviers et son violon. Les titres de l’album se mêlent parfaitement aux anciens, et on sent que le public lillois passe une très belle soirée vu les applaudissements entre les morceaux. Les musiciens sont ravis de jouer devant un public aussi nombreux, et donnent tout pour nous plonger dans leur univers très lutte sociale. Difficile de ne pas comprendre les messages de titres comme « Strut » ou « Points Of View ». Sur les morceaux « Easy Being Lazy » et « Mourning After Morning », c’est Sam Coburn qui passe au chant et nous envoute avec sa voix douce et sa guitare acoustique. Le groupe continue son set avec « Eastbound And Down » et l’excellent « The National Team » chanté cette fois par Cameron Sims (basse). Largement applaudi par la salle, le groupe quitte la scène mais revient très vite pour un dernier titre après avoir été rappelé par le public. On les voit quitter la scène heureux de cette belle soirée, et on sent que de prochains passages ne vont pas tarder à arriver. On leur souhaite une belle tournée et des salles pleines partout.

After having loved their first album Hands Across The Creek (available via The State 51 Conspiracy), I couldn’t wait to see the English band Hotel Lux live. The wait wasn’t that long as the band played at L’Aéronef in Lille on Tuesday 7th February, just over a week after the release of the album. And the Lille audience turned out in droves as the venue, in club configuration, was sold out. The band added that this date was their biggest European headline yet, a fact to be credited to the renowned Lille audience. To open the evening we discover the music of Chester Remington, a band from Reims.

Chester Remington‘s set starts with the song « If Me Answers » and from the start the band catches us with its rock but filled with various musical influences. Every musician in the band is in great shape and tries to catch the Lille audience on the fly. Musically it’s a real discovery that we make tonight and track after track we let ourselves be carried away by what Chester Remington offers us. « Out There » or « Call 911 » are tracks that make even the most recalcitrant move. By the way, congratulations to the band for this magnificent siren sound on the guitar! The singer of the band literally moves in all directions and is often joined by his bassist and the keyboardist for the chorus. And when the latter becomes the lead singer of one of the songs, his sidekicks turn their backs on the audience for a few moments to let him take the spotlight. The band announces the last two songs and it’s off again for a rock/post punk/garage…. mix of the most beautiful effect. We can only salute the performance of the band who knew how to get us ready for the arrival of the headliner, while being a discovery that we will not hesitate to return to see as soon as possible. We invite you to immerse yourself in the world of seagulls and yellow oilskins of Chester Remington.
It’s time to welcome Hotel Lux for what promises to be an excellent concert. The six-piece take the stage and start off with a bang with « Common Sense ». The strength of the band lies in the vocals and attitude of Lewis Duffin. The post punk of the English takes another dimension live and the sequence of the first tracks proves that we are facing a future great band of the genre. Each musician has his place and we can clearly salute the performance of Dillon Home who will alternate between his keyboards and his violin all evening. The tracks from the album blend perfectly with the old ones, and you can feel that the audience in Lille is having a great time as they applaud between songs. The musicians are delighted to play in front of such a large audience, and give their all to immerse us in their very social struggle universe. It’s hard not to understand the messages of tracks like « Strut » or « Points Of View ». On the tracks « Easy Being Lazy » and « Mourning After Morning », Sam Coburn takes over the vocals and bewitches us with his soft voice and his acoustic guitar. The band continued their set with « Eastbound And Down » and the excellent « The National Team » sung this time by Cameron Sims (bass). The band leave the stage to a huge applause from the audience, but come back very quickly for a last song after being called back by the audience. We see them leave the stage happy with this beautiful evening, and we feel that future appearances will not be long in coming. We wish them a great tour and full houses everywhere.
