Les anglais ont un groupe qui a su d’années en années se forger une réputation solide de groupe majeur de la nouvelle scène prog métal. Cette formation c’est Haken, et ils sont de retour cette année avec leur septième album! Intitulé Fauna, il sera disponible dès le 3 mars prochain via InsideOut Music.

Pour ce nouvel album, le groupe retrouve Pete Jones aux claviers! Le musicien ayant quitté le groupe il y a de nombreuses années, son retour annonce une nouvelle collaboration avec la formation anglaise et on espère qu’elle sera longue et fructueuse tant son talent a marqué les premières sorties du groupe.
Le premier morceau de l’album, déjà disponible depuis quelques semaines part du côté du djent avec des riffs typiques de ce style. « Taurus » vient rejoindre des morceaux des deux derniers albums du groupe qui avaient ce son très influencé par le prog métal moderne. Bien évidemment Ross Jennings est en grande forme vocale et prouve encore une fois qu’il est un des chanteurs les plus accrocheurs de ces dernières années.
On poursuit avec le premier titre que le groupe a dévoilé pour cet album, « Nightingale ». Ce morceau détonne avec le premier et propose un titre plus proche des anciens albums de la formation. Les fans de The Mountain, par exemple, se retrouveront totalement dans ce titre.
On continue dans les single de l’album avec le très inventif « The Alphabet Of Me », qui propose des sonorités très modernes qui viennent nous dérouter tout en nous montrant une nouvelle fois que Haken sont les maîtres des compositions qu’on a envie d’écouter en boucle dès la première écoute pour en découvrir toutes les subtilités.
Richard Henshall et Charles Griffiths forment toujours un duo de guitare absolument mémorable et le morceau « Sempiternal Beings » leur donne toute la place pour s’illustrer pleinement. En quatre titres les anglais sont déjà sur une route nouvelle, souvent tortueuse musicalement mais laissant toujours des repères connus ici et là pour nous permettre de ne pas nous perdre dans cette aventure.
La section rythmique du groupe portée par Conner Green (basse) et Raymond Hearne (batterie) a toujours été le point fort du groupe selon moi. Et un morceau comme « Island In The Clouds » me le confirme encore une fois. Le dernier single de cet album, « Love Bite » vient nous ajouter une belle dose de variété à un album déjà très varié. On part sur une composition rapide, proposant des sonorités encore inédites dans la musique des anglais. Je vous laisse découvrir le titre en toute fin d’article. Une belle pépite qui aura toute sa place lors des prochaines tournées du groupe.
On arrive à la pièce maîtresse de cet album, le morceau « Elephants Never Forget »! Encore une fois, tout le groupe brille par son talent de composition et d’interprétation, dans un titre qui n’aura aucun mal à rejoindre des classiques comme « Cockroach King » ou « The Architect » dans ma liste des morceaux que je préfère du groupe.
On arrive sur le dernier morceau de cet album, dédié au père de Richard Henshall. Ce dernier titre laisse à Pete Jones une dernière occasion de montrer qu’il a clairement bien retrouvé le groupe, en nous proposant des sons de claviers très différent de ce que Diego Tejeida pouvait proposer dans les albums précédents.
Fauna est une nouvelle preuve que Haken atteignent album après album de nouveaux sommets. La diversité musicale de cet album est impressionnante et laisse l’auditeur se balader dans une œuvre musicale dense mais accessible. L’envie de réécouter chaque titre de nombreuses fois pour en déceler toutes les subtilités est forte, ce qui fait de cet album une nouvelle solide pierre à l’édifice qu’est la discographie des anglais.

The English have a band that has built up a solid reputation as a major band of the new prog metal scene over the years. This band is Haken, and they are back this year with their seventh album! Entitled Fauna, it will be available on March 3rd via InsideOut Music.
For this new album, the band finds Pete Jones on keyboards! The musician having left the band many years ago, his return announces a new collaboration with the English formation and we hope that it will be long and fruitful so much his talent marked the first releases of the band.
The first track of the album, already available for a few weeks, goes to the side of djent with typical riffs of this style. « Taurus » joins tracks from the last two albums of the band that had this sound very influenced by modern prog metal. Obviously Ross Jennings is in great vocal form and proves once again that he is one of the most catchy singers of these last years.
We continue with the first track that the band unveiled for this album, « Nightingale ». This track contrasts with the first one and offers a track closer to the old albums of the band. The fans of The Mountain, for example, will totally find themselves in this track.
We continue in the single of the album with the very inventive « The Alphabet Of Me », which proposes very modern sounds which come to confuse us while showing us once again that Haken are the masters of the compositions that we want to listen in loop from the first listening to discover all the subtleties.
Richard Henshall and Charles Griffiths always form an absolutely memorable guitar duo and the track « Sempiternal Beings » gives them all the space to fully illustrate themselves. In four tracks the English are already on a new road, often tortuous musically but always leaving known landmarks here and there to allow us not to get lost in this adventure.
The rhythm section of the band carried by Conner Green (bass) and Raymond Hearne (drums) has always been the strong point of the band in my opinion. And a song like « Island In The Clouds » confirms it to me once again. The last single of this album, « Love Bite » comes to add a nice dose of variety to an already very varied album. We leave on a fast composition, proposing sounds still unpublished in the music of the English. I let you discover the title at the end of the article. A beautiful nugget which will have all its place during the next tours of the group.
Here comes the masterpiece of this album, the track « Elephants Never Forget »! Once again, the whole band shines by its talent of composition and interpretation, in a title which will have no difficulty in joining classics like « Cockroach King » or « The Architect » in my list of my favorite songs from the band.
We arrive on the last track of this album, dedicated to the father of Richard Henshall. This last track gives Pete Jones a last opportunity to show that he has clearly found the band again, by offering us keyboard sounds very different from what Diego Tejeida could offer in the previous albums.
Fauna is a new proof that Haken reach new heights album after album. The musical diversity of this album is impressive and lets the listener wander through a dense but accessible musical work. The desire to listen to each track many times to detect all the subtleties is strong, which makes this album a new solid stone to the edifice that is the discography of the English.
