Dans ces artistes anglais à ne surtout pas louper, il y a The Luka State. Après un passage remarqué à Taratata, deux concerts à Paris (au 1999 et aux Etoiles) que nous n’avons loupé pour rien au monde, nous sommes heureux de retrouver le groupe pour la sortie de leur deuxième album : More Than This, ce 10 mars 2023 via Thirty Tiger.

Si vous êtes familier avec The Luka State, accrochez vous car cet album vient faire un très grand pas ! Après un album très rock adolescent, le quatuor est de retour avec une volonté toute autre : les combats. Qu’ils soient sociaux, politiques, ou même personnel, le groupe va nous plonger dans un tableau de l’Angleterre assez sombre et triste, mais d’une réalité que l’on ne peut lier. En 2022, ce n’est pas moins de 1,3 millions de familles qui ont eu recours aux banques alimentaires, et Conrad Ellis, chanteur du groupe y a travaillé pendant un temps et ça l’a profondément marqué. The Luka State s’est engagé avec la plus grande banque alimentaire du Royaume Uni : The Trussell Trust et offre une partie du prix des tickets pour celle ci. Un engagement fort, qui vient nous surprendre positivement, et qui va totalement façonner l’écriture de cet album Et le morceau « More Than This », offrant le titre de l’album en est le message le plus fort : on est face ici à une famille à genoux, n’ayant plus d’argent pour manger, pour rembourser ses crédits, accumulant plusieurs jobs. La musique fait monter la tension crescendo, on suffoque, on est écrasé par la pression du quotidien. Le morceau est d’une force majeure et trouve une place de choix au milieu de l’album, comme point culminant.
Les combats se font aussi intérieurement avec tous les soucis de santé mentale. « Losing Streak » vient nous les crier en pleine face ce mal-être, sous des airs très dansant. Les musiciens sont d’une force tout au long des morceaux. La basse de Sam Bell est parfaitement mise en avant sur « Oxygen Thief » et vient nous faire vibrer en rythme avec la batterie de Jake Barnabas. La rage ressort de ce titre comme une thérapie musicale face à divers traumatismes.
Et si les sonorités viennent nous rappeler le travail de Frank Carter comme sur « Bring Us Down », les anglais de The Luka State ont une patte qui devient de plus en plus reconnaissable de morceaux en morceaux. Si on accroche avec un des morceaux du groupe, vous ne pourrez plus les quitter ! On retrouvera quand même dans cet album de beaux sons d’amour, comme cette lettre d’amour qu’est « Stick Around » ou cette balade « Movies » qui vient clôturer ce court album.
The Luka State reviennent plus fort que jamais. Avec un engagement politique et social que l’on n’aurait pas imaginer dans leur précédent album, le groupe prend un tournant fort dans ses messages et la place qu’il souhaite tenir dans la scène rock anglaise. Tourbillon de rock, le quatuor nous embarque dans son univers pétant, entraînant, avec une écriture et une composition encore plus peaufiné et marquante.

In these English artists not to be missed, there is The Luka State. After a noticed passage in Taratata, two concerts in Paris (at the 1999 and at the Etoiles) that we didn’t miss for anything in the world, we are happy to find the band for the release of their second album: More Than This, this March 10th, 2023 via Thirty Tiger.
If you’re familiar with The Luka State, hang on because this album is a big step forward! After a very teenage rock album, the quartet is back with a very different will: the fights. Whether they are social, political or even personal, the band is going to plunge us into a rather dark and sad picture of England, but of a reality that cannot be bound. In 2022, no less than 1.3 million families used food banks, and Conrad Ellis, the band’s singer, worked there for a while and it deeply affected him. The Luka State is committed to the largest food bank in the UK: The Trussell Trust and offers a portion of the ticket price for it. A strong commitment, which comes as a positive surprise, and which will totally shape the writing of this album. And the track « More Than This », offering the title of the album is the strongest message: we are facing here a family on its knees, having no more money to eat, to pay off its loans, accumulating several jobs. The music makes the tension rise crescendo, we suffocate, we are crushed by the pressure of the daily life. The song is of a major force and finds a place of choice in the middle of the album, as a climax.
The fights are also done internally with all the worries of mental health. « Losing Streak » comes to shout them to us in full face this malaise, under very dancing airs. The musicians are of a force throughout the pieces. The bass of Sam Bell is perfectly put forward on « Oxygen Thief » and comes to make us vibrate in rhythm with the drum of Jake Barnabas. The rage comes out of this track like a musical therapy in front of various traumas.
And if the sounds remind us of Frank Carter‘s work like on « Bring Us Down », the English of The Luka State have a touch that becomes more and more recognizable from track to track. If you get hooked with one of the band’s tracks, you won’t be able to leave them anymore! We will still find in this album beautiful sounds of love, like this love letter that is « Stick Around » or this ballad « Movies » which comes to close this short album.
The Luka State come back stronger than ever. With a political and social commitment that we would not have imagined in their previous album, the band takes a strong turn in their messages and the place they wish to hold in the English rock scene. A whirlwind of rock, the quartet embarks us in their sparkling, catchy universe, with a writing and a composition even more refined and striking.
