Voilà une tournée Européenne très spéciale et émotionnelle pour Swell, car c’est une tournée en hommage au chanteur de cet excellent groupe d’indie rock, David Freel qui nous a quitté le 12 Avril 2022. Beaucoup attendaient cette date avec impatience, pour remonter le temps et revivre leurs souvenirs avec du groupe avec lequel ils ont grandi. Swell ont su tenir leur promesse, en toute simplicité, comme leur musique, simple, unique et authentique.

Jour de semaine, fin du mois d’Avril, le temps est toujours changeant, mais ce soir tout est clément. Petite éclairie de fin de journée, la ville de Tourcoing est calme. Le Grand Mix ouvre ses portes. Les gens arrivent petit à petit et la salle se remplit, pour finir pleine d’un public nostalgique de la vague indie rock des 90. Ils savent qui ils viennent voir, Swell, un groupe qui a bercé une partie de leur vie. Le concert commence par une introduction orale, sans instruments, en hommage à David Freel. Puis les membres d’origine de groupe montent sur scène, tranquillement, entre les divers applaudissements. Les premières notes démarrent et les premières mélodies aussi. Elles nous replongent de suite dans une vague vaporeuse, une sorte de rêve éveillé. L’émotion est là et des silences entre les chansons se font entendre, le temps de savoir apprivoiser de nouveaux les émotions nécessaires pour se replonger dans ces souvenirs musicaux. On peut encore ressentir très fortement la présence de David dans ce que dégagent Swell, il est toujours là parmis eux, parmis nous.

Sur la scène, une photo encadrée en sa mémoire et quelques bougies brûlaient. Leurs notes douces et calmes mais aussi chaleureusement rythmées nous faisaient voyager, leur musique hypnotique et doucement frénétique nous invitait dans les méandres des souvenirs de ce groupe si apprécié des nostalgiques de cette belle période qu’étaient les 90’s. Le public captivé est conquis. Ce n’était pas sans émotions que Swell jouaient leurs morceaux qui défilaient les uns après les autres, et qui nous donnaient encore l’impression d’avoir 15 ans de nouveau, même si c’était il y a bien longtemps. Etrange voyage émotionnellement « confortable » et « sécuritaire », la musique de Swell est comme un étrange nuage de coton qui vient vous envelopper, en vous prenant la main pour vous aider à traverser la route, et encore mieux, pour vous faire voyager, transcendé dans un univers beaucoup plus proche du paradis que des enfers. Une mélancolie contenue et soutenue, qui aurait trempée dans un rock langoureux et envoûtant. Ce soir il n’y avait qu’eux, les gens étaient venu pour eux. Et ils en ont pris plein les oreilles, et plein les yeux.

This is a very special and emotional European tour for Swell, as it is a tribute tour to the lead singer of this great indie rock band, David Freel who passed away on April 12, 2022. Many were looking forward to this date, to go back in time and relive their memories with the band they grew up with. They know who they’ve come to see, Swell, a band that has rocked their lives. The concert starts with a spoken introduction, without instruments, in tribute to David Freel. Then the original members of the band come on stage, quietly, between the various applause. The first notes start and so do the first melodies. They immediately plunge us into a vaporous wave, a kind of daydream. The emotion is there and there are silences between the songs, the time to learn to tame the emotions necessary to immerse oneself in these musical memories. You can still feel David‘s presence in Swell‘s music, he is always there among them, among us.

On the stage, a framed photo in his memory and some candles were burning. Their soft and calm but also warmly rhythmic notes made us travel, their hypnotic and gently frenetic music invited us into the meanders of the memories of this band so appreciated by the nostalgics of this beautiful period that was the 90’s. The captivated audience was won over. It was not without emotion that Swell played their songs that went by one after the other, and that still gave us the impression of being 15 years old again, even if it was a long time ago. A strange journey emotionally « comfortable » and « safe », Swell’s music is like a strange cotton cloud that comes to envelop you, taking your hand to help you cross the road, and even better, to make you travel, transcended in a universe much closer to paradise than to hell. A contained and sustained melancholy, which would have been soaked in a languorous and bewitching rock. Tonight it was just them, the people had come for them. And they got an earful, and an eyeful.
