The Ascending, nouveau groupe nantais formé de plusieurs noms reconnus de la scène locale, sortent en ce mois de mai leur premier album. Il sera disponible dès le 5 mai via Frozen Records et Klonosphère. Que nous réserve cette nouvelle formation avec cette première sortie?

La pochette de l’album, fruit du travail de Corentin Schieb, marque par sa beauté et nous donne envie de plonger tête la première dans la musique de ce super groupe nantais. On commence avec le morceau titre qui nous envoute en quelques secondes avec ses guitares douces et son rythme lent. La voix de Jessica (Kervegans, Alan Stivell) est magnifique et se mêle parfaitement à celle hurlée de Clair (Stinky) et à celle de Eddy (Eddy Kaiser). Le violon ajoute à la beauté de ce premier morceau qui nous incite à nous plonger tête la première dans l’univers de la formation. Le second titre met en avant le jeu de batterie de Thomas (Tsar) et de guitare et claviers de Alex (Les Hommes Crabes, No Jogging For Today). Les harmonies vocales du groupes rappellent les plus belles heure d’Anathema, et ce n’est clairement pas pour me déplaire. Difficile de qualifier l’album stylistiquement on est entre métal, post rock et dark folk.
Une vraie réussite qui se confirme avec le majestueux « Oblivion » qui met largement en avant le jeu de basse de Maxime (20 Seconds Falling Man, Inglorious Bad Stars). The Ascending est en train de créer quelque chose d’unique dans le paysage musical français avec des personnes issues d’univers très différents qui forment un tout se complétant parfaitement. Difficile de ne pas se laisse porter par les compositions douces et mélancoliques de l’album, d’ailleurs les paroles touchent également au cœur portées par une interprétation magnifique de tous les vocalistes. Dans certains aspects de la musique on est aussi dans les contrées de ce que Chelsea Wolfe peut proposer. Le dernier morceau termine cet album en beauté en nous offrant une pièce encore une fois inoubliable qui nous plonge une dernière fois dans ce monde d’une beauté folle dans le quel on aimerait rester plus longtemps.
The Ascending nous offrent une première sortie très forte qui saura plaire à beaucoup! Ce premier album met en avant chaque musicien.ne en les laissant exprimer leurs individualités, tout en gardant une unité qui marque et qui me donne clairement envie d’en entendre plus. Il ne reste plus qu’à espérer que ce projet musical unique puisse voir le jour en live également! Un album majestueux vers lequel je reviendrais souvent!

The Ascending, a new band from Nantes made up of several well-known names from the local scene, are releasing their first album in May. It will be available on May 5th via Frozen Records and Klonosphere. What does this new band have in store for us with this first release?

The album cover, the work of Corentin Schieb, is beautiful and makes us want to dive head first into the music of this supergroup from Nantes. We start with the title track which bewitches us in a few seconds with its soft guitars and its slow rhythm. Jessica‘s voice (Kervegans, Alan Stivell) is magnificent and blends perfectly with Clair‘s (Stinky) screaming voice and Eddy‘s warm voice. The violin adds to the beauty of this first track which encourages us to dive head first into the band’s universe. The second track highlights the drumming of Thomas (Tsar) and the guitar and keyboards of Alex (Les Hommes Crabes, No Jogging For Today). The vocal harmonies of the band are reminiscent of Anathema‘s finest hour, and this is clearly not to my displeasure. It’s hard to qualify the album stylistically, it’s between metal, post rock and dark folk.
A real success which is confirmed with the majestic « Oblivion » which largely puts forward the bass playing of Maxime (20 Seconds Falling Man, Inglorious Bad Stars). The Ascending is creating something unique in the French musical landscape with people coming from very different universes who form a whole that perfectly complements each other. It’s hard not to be carried away by the soft and melancholic compositions of the album, and the lyrics also touch the heart, carried by the magnificent interpretation of all the vocalists. In some aspects of the music we are also in the regions of what Chelsea Wolfe can offer. The last track ends this album in beauty by offering us another unforgettable piece that plunges us one last time into this world of crazy beauty in which we would like to stay longer.
The Ascending offer us a very strong first release that will please many! This first album highlights each musician by letting them express their individuality, while keeping a unity that makes me want to hear more. We can only hope that this unique musical project will be able to see the light of day live as well! A majestic album to which I will return often!
