En 2019, Ice Nine Kills visitaient le Backstage By The Mill pour un concert qui a marqué tous ceux qui y ont assisté! Les américains ont ensuite sorti une suite à leur album tourné vers les films d’horreur qui a clairement transformé l’essai! Après un petit report dû à l’alignement de la tournée avec celle de Metallica dont le groupe fait la première partie, les américains sont annoncés à L’Elysée Montmartre pour un concert s’annonçant encore plus époustouflant. Pour cette date, ça n’est pas moins de trois groupes qui les accompagnent: leurs compatriotes de Skynd et Lansdowne et les thaïlandais de Defying Decay. L’affiche est alléchante et on ne pouvait clairement pas manquer ça!

On commence donc la soirée avec Defying Decay dans une salle déjà bien remplie. C’est notre première rencontre avec le groupe et on découvre leur métal alternatif redoutablement efficace. A sept sur scènes ils peuvent nous proposer une musique tintée de claviers et autres sons électroniques qui leur donne une identité claire. Leur prestation trouve son public et on voit les premiers mouvements dans la fosse de la salle parisienne. On sent que tout le groupe veux nous montrer le meilleur et c’est réussi! On se dit rapidement que le groupe a déjà une belle puissance, et après vérification ils sont actifs depuis 2010, ce qui explique cette aisance sur scène. En 30 minutes les thaïlandais vont montrer que leur pays est clairement à placer sur la carte du métal et qu’il faut compter sur eux et leur énergie débordante. Une vraie belle découverte qu’on vous encourage à aller découvrir au plus vite!
Le public déjà bien chaud accueille les américains de Lansdowne pour une demi-heure de rock US menée tambours battants. Le groupe mené par un Jon Ricci en grande forme veut continuer de faire monter l’énergie dans la salle et c’est réussi. On se laisse porter par les morceaux furieux de la formation. Il faut dire que le groupe semble bien connaître la scène tant l’aisance des musiciens devant un public qu’ils ne connaissent pas est bluffante. Les morceaux s’enchaînent et ne laissent jamais retomber la pression! Là aussi, de notre côté la découverte est totale et on passe un très bon moment. Le groupe nous remercie d’être présents si nombreux et envoie deux derniers morceaux bien puissants qui confirment leur capacité indéniable à retourner une fosse! Lansdowne ont réussi leur prestation et repartent en ayant clairement gagné des fans ce soir!
Il est temps d’accueillir l’ovni de cette soirée, Skynd. Le duo, renforcé par un troisième musicien sur scène nous plonge dans un univers musical entre métal, rock et électro qui fonctionne à merveille. On se laisse porter par les histoires que la chanteuse nous raconte, toutes très morbides et sombres. Les crimes narrés tout au long du set sont parfaitement mis en musique et laissent le public parisien sans voix. Les musiciens masqués accompagnent parfaitement la voix puissante de Skynd, et l’ensemble est un véritable plaisir pour les oreilles. Après une quarantaine de minutes hors du temps le trio nous laisse totalement prêts pour le set tant attendu de la tête d’affiche, mais surtout en ayant laissé une véritable emprunte dans nos esprits!
Et c’est parti pour le bal des horreurs! Les américains d’Ice Nine Kills débarquent devant une salle chauffé à blanc, prête à tout donner dans le pit et au chant. Le groupe démarre fort avec « Funeral Derangements », chanson basée sur Pet Sematary de Stephen King. Les musiciens arrivent sur scène avec des masques d’animaux assez flippants qui donnent clairement le ton de cette soirée. Le public est déjà très chaud et reprend le morceau en chœur. La puissance du groupe réside dans le charisme de chacun de ses membres qui eux aussi alternent quasi tous entre jeu millimétré et vocalises maîtrisées. Spencer Charnas enchaîne les costumes et arrive en complet bleu pour le désormais culte « Hip To Be Scared ». Ricky Armellino et Dan Sugarman sont au sommet de leur art et nous proposent leurs riffs acérés, notemment sur « IT Is The End ». Le public est aux anges et nous savourons tous le plaisir de voir le groupe sur une grande scène, qui leur permet de mettre tout leur attirail horrifique en valeur. Après un petit retour en arrière avec « Communion Of The Cursed », on repart de plus belle dans les années dorées du film d’épouvante avec « The American Nightmare », évidemment basée sur A Nightmare On Elm Street. Ici Spencer est affublé d’un gant griffu et d’un chapeau, qui nous rappelle évidemment à tous Freddy Krueger. Joseph Occhiuti (basse) et Patrick Galante (batterie) forment un duo rythmique de feu qui ne nous laissera aucun répit de tout le set. On part ensuite du côté de Norman Bates et de la fameuse « Shower Scene » qui sera littéralement mise en scène avec un Spencer prêt à tout pour nous divertir de la plus belle des manières. La soirée file à une vitesse folle avec chaque titre mis en valeur par des costumes et décors appropriés. Un véritable show à l’américaine! Child’s Play, The Crow ou encore The Texas Chainsaw Massacre sont tous représentés ce soir avec chacun leur morceau attitré. On ne sait plus où donner de la tête tant la fête est autant sur scène que dans le public, mais il est temps pour le groupe de nous balancer les deux derniers morceaux de cette soirée! Après un « Farewell II Flesh » d’anthologie, il est temps pour Mickael Myers de faire son apparition sur le tubesque « Stabbing In The Dark ». Le public en réclame plus et les musiciens reviennent pour un titre. Nous avons le droit pour terminer la soirée au morceau titre de l’album The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood, choix parfait pour résumer la prestation qui vient de se dérouler.
Ice Nine Kills ont prouvé ce soir qu’ils sont un groupe de très grand talent, prêt pour les plus grandes scènes européennes. La soirée qu’ils nous ont fait vivre a tenue toutes ses promesses et nous donne envie de retrouver le groupe au plus vite. On espère fort que de nouvelles dates en France seront annoncées et que la région lilloise pourra accueillir la folie horrifique proposée par les américains. Une date qui marquera clairement notre année 2023!

In 2019, Ice Nine Kills visited the Backstage By The Mill for a concert that left a lasting impression on all who attended! The Americans then released a sequel to their horror film oriented album which clearly turned out to be a hit! After a small postponement due to the alignment of the tour with that of Metallica, for whom the band is the opening act, the Americans are announced at L’Elysée Montmartre for a concert that promises to be even more breathtaking. For this date, no less than three bands will accompany them: their compatriots Skynd and Lansdowne and Thailand’s Defying Decay. The line-up is mouth-watering and we clearly couldn’t miss it!

So we start the evening with Defying Decay in an already well filled room. This is our first encounter with the band and we discover their formidable alternative metal. With seven people on stage, they can offer us a music tinged with keyboards and other electronic sounds that give them a clear identity. Their performance finds its audience and we see the first movements in the pit of the Parisian venue. We feel that the whole band wants to show us the best and it’s a success! We quickly realize that the band already has a lot of power, and after checking they have been active since 2010, which explains this ease on stage. In 30 minutes, the Thai band will show that their country is clearly on the metal map and that you can count on them and their overflowing energy. A really nice discovery that we encourage you to go and discover as soon as possible!
The already warm audience welcomes the Americans of Lansdowne for a half hour of US rock led by a drummer. The band, led by a Jon Ricci in great shape, wants to continue to raise the energy in the room and they succeed. We let ourselves be carried away by the band’s furious songs. It must be said that the band seems to know the stage so well that the ease of the musicians in front of an audience they don’t know is amazing. The songs follow one another and never let the pressure drop! Here too, we had a total discovery and a very good time. The band thanks us for being there in such large numbers and sends two very powerful last tracks that confirm their undeniable capacity to turn a pit upside down! Lansdowne have succeeded in their performance and leave having clearly won fans tonight!
It’s time to welcome the UFO of the evening, Skynd. The duo, reinforced by a third musician on stage, plunges us into a musical universe between metal, rock and electro that works wonderfully. We let ourselves be carried away by the stories the singer tells us, all very morbid and dark. The crimes narrated throughout the set are perfectly set to music and leave the Parisian audience speechless. The masked musicians accompany Skynd’s powerful voice perfectly, and the whole thing is a real pleasure for the ears. After about forty minutes out of time the trio leaves us totally ready for the long awaited headliner’s set, but above all having left a real mark on our minds!
And here we go for the horrors ball! The American band Ice Nine Kills arrive in front of a warmed up crowd ready to give everything in the pit and on vocals. The band starts off strong with « Funeral Derangements », a song based on Stephen King‘s Pet Sematary. The musicians arrive on stage wearing creepy animal masks which clearly set the tone for the evening. The audience is already very hot and starts to sing along. The power of the band lies in the charisma of each of its members, who almost all alternate between meticulous playing and masterful vocals. Spencer Charnas dons one costume after another and arrives in a blue suit for the now cult « Hip To Be Scared ». Ricky Armellino and Dan Sugarman are at the top of their game and offer us their sharp riffs, especially on « IT Is The End ». The audience is ecstatic and we all enjoy the pleasure of seeing the band on a big stage, which allows them to showcase all their horrific gear. After a little flashback with « Communion Of The Cursed », we go back to the golden years of horror movies with « The American Nightmare », obviously based on A Nightmare On Elm Street. Here Spencer is decked out in a clawed glove and hat, which obviously reminds us all of Freddy Krueger. Joseph Occhiuti (bass) and Patrick Galante (drums) form a fiery rhythmic duo that will not let us rest for the whole set. We then move on to Norman Bates and the famous « Shower Scene » which is literally staged with Spencer ready to do anything to entertain us in the most beautiful way. The evening flies by at breakneck speed, with each song highlighted by appropriate costumes and decorations. A real American show! Child’s Play, The Crow or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are all represented tonight with their own song. We don’t know where to turn as the party is as much on stage as in the audience, but it’s time for the band to play the last two songs of the evening! After a great « Farewell II Flesh », it’s time for Mickael Myers to make his appearance on the hit « Stabbing In The Dark ». The audience asks for more and the musicians come back for a track. We are treated to the title track of The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood to end the evening, a perfect choice to sum up the performance that has just taken place.
Ice Nine Kills proved tonight that they are a very talented band, ready for the biggest European stages. The evening they gave us lived up to all its promises and makes us want to see the band again as soon as possible. We strongly hope that new dates in France will be announced and that the Lille region will be able to welcome the horrific madness proposed by the Americans. A date that will clearly mark our year 2023!
