Yes, un groupe qui m’a toujours accompagné et qui a toujours été important pour moi, alors les voir sortir leur vingt-troisième album cette année est un immense plaisir. Intitulé Mirror To The Sky, il est disponible via InsideOut Music, bien évidemment avec une pochette toujours signé Roger Dean . Que nous réserve le combo anglais pour cette nouvelle aventure?

Dès « Cut From The Stars » on retrouve tout ce qui fait le son de Yes que j’aime tant! La voix de Jon Davison est depuis plus de 10 ans le nouveau symbole du groupe, et touche encore juste dans ce nouvel opus. Le premier morceau de cet album est entrainant, presque dansant et nous annonce un son résolument moderne. Arrivent ensuite les premiers morceaux plus longs de l’album et on y retrouve tout ce qui a toujours fait le bonheur des fans du groupe, dont les magnifiques guitares de Steve Howe et la basse de Billy Sherwood qui se répondent toujours aussi bien. Le prog rock de Yes est toujours au sommet et ne cesse de surprendre après toutes ces années de carrière. Le titre « Living Out Their Dream » laisse une place de choix aux claviers de Geoff Downes, qui arrive à proposer une variété de sons assez dingue en un peu moins de 5 minutes. Arrive ensuite la pièce maîtresse de cet album, le morceau titre! Les sonorités de guitares de Steve Howe sont magistrales et confirment l’envie de continuer à proposer ce que les fans veulent mais avec une touche de modernité qu’on apprécie beaucoup. Sur ce titre le Fames Studio Orchestra fait des merveilles sous la baguette de Oleg Kondratenko et sur des arrangements de Paul K. Joyce. Je me délecte totalement de la magnifique performance vocale de Jon Davison qui montre une fois encore qu’il est fait pour chanter pour le groupe anglais. Le dernier titre du premier disque est l’occasion de saluer le talent de batteur et de percussionniste de Jay Schellen, qui ici se contente d’apporter un peu de douceur avec quelques percussions douces sur un morceau majestueux qui clôt parfaitement cette première partie d’écoute.  On le retrouve plus puissant mais toujours aussi émotionnellement impactant sur « Unknown Place ». Le groupe en a encore sous le pied et nous enchante une dernière fois avec les deux derniers titres de cet album, dont le court mais diablement efficace « Magic Potion » qui laisse à chaque musicien une dernière occasion de nous prouver une fois encore tout son talent.

Avec Mirror To The Sky, Yes nous confirment qu’année après année ils savent se réinventer tout en gardant un son identifiable entre mille. On a face à nous de un album exceptionnel du combo anglais qui a trouvé son rythme de croisière avec cette formation studio. Ce nouvel opus rejoint le meilleur de leur discographie sans aucun problème et me donne envie de retrouver le groupe en live au plus vite.

Entitled Mirror To The Sky, it is available via InsideOut Music, obviously with a cover still signed by Roger Dean. What does the English combo have in store for us for this new adventure?

From « Cut From The Stars » we find everything that makes the Yes sound that I love so much! Jon Davison‘s voice has been the new symbol of the band for more than 10 years, and it still hits the mark in this new opus. The first track of this album is catchy, almost danceable and announces a resolutely modern sound. The album’s first longer tracks follow, and we find everything that has always made the band’s fans happy, including Steve Howe‘s magnificent guitars and Billy Sherwood‘s bass, which still respond well to each other. Yes‘ prog rock is still at the top of its game and still surprising after all these years. The track « Living Out Their Dream » features Geoff Downes‘ keyboards, which manage to offer a crazy variety of sounds in just under 5 minutes. Then comes the centrepiece of the album, the title track! Steve Howe‘s guitar tones are masterful and confirm the desire to continue to offer what the fans want but with a modern touch that we really appreciate. On this track the Fames Studio Orchestra works wonders under the baton of Oleg Kondratenko and arrangements by Paul K. Joyce. I totally enjoy the magnificent vocal performance of Jon Davison who shows once again that he is made to sing for the English band. The last track of the first disc is the occasion to salute the talent of drummer and percussionist Jay Schellen, who here is content to bring a little sweetness with some soft percussions on a majestic track that perfectly closes this first part of listening. We find him more powerful but still as emotionally impactful on « Unknown Place ». The band still has a lot to offer and enchants us one last time with the last two tracks of this album, including the short but devilishly efficient « Magic Potion » which gives each musician one last opportunity to prove once again all his talent.

With Mirror To The Sky, Yes confirm that year after year they know how to reinvent themselves while keeping an identifiable sound. We have in front of us an exceptional album of the English combo who found its cruising speed with this studio formation. This new opus joins the best of their discography without any problem and makes me want to find the band live as soon as possible.
