Il y a de ces artistes qui marquent des vies, qui sortent des chefs d’oeuvres ou qui feront vibrer des milliers de gens pendant des décennies. Alors que leur avenir avait pris une tournure dramatique suite à la disparition de leur batteur Taylor Hawkins, les Foo Fighters ont décidé de renaitre de leurs cendres et écrire leur 11ème album, But Here We Are, pour refaire vibrer les fans, redonner de l’espoir, panser leur blessure et surtout ne pas oublier. L’album est disponible depuis ce 2 juin via Roswell Records.

Alors que les Foo Fighters ont été créée par Dave Grohl après la disparition de Kurt Cobain, c’est aussi un évenement qui « arrive de nul part » qui débute cet album sur le morceau « Rescued ». La marque de fabrique Foo Fighters est là, on reconnait le groupe dès les premières notes, et avoir un morceau qui sonne si Foo Fighters en ouverture est un réel réconfort pour nous. « Under You » nous plonge dans la tête de Dave, et sa quête de repère. La chanson est puissante, hyper dansante et est marqué par un sentiment de joie qui en dégage. On imagine très bien les versions lives de ce titre. Le ton dansant s’efface assez vite pour nous laisser entendre la voix chuchotante de Dave sur « Hearing Voices » jusqu’à arriver à un enregistrement musical plus « brut », comme si l’on était dans le studio avec lui. Le titre épnonyme de l’album nous plonge dans un univers prog rock laissant la voix du frontman se transformer sous les cris de douleur si magistraux de part sa rugosité. Comment vivre sans l’autre ? « The Glass » vient nous toucher en plein coeur avec ces paroles « I had a person I loved, and just like that, I was left to live without him » (traduisez « J’avais une personne que j’aimais, et juste comme ça, je me retrouve à devoir vivre sans lui« ). Et même si Taylor n’est plus là, c’est Violet, la fille de Dave qui vient prêter main forte sur « Show Me How » et son shoegaze envoûtant. Alors que la disparition de Taylor est dans les esprits de tous, la famille Grohl a vu en Août dernier la disparition de Virginia Grohl, mère et grand-mère de Dave et Violet. Leur questionnement « Who will show me how ? (traduisez « Qui va me montrer comment faire ») prends une dimension d’autant plus forte, et place Virginia en tant que pilier familial jusqu’au magnifique « The Teacher ». Long de 10 minutes, on est à la recherche de guide « Tu m’as appris à respirer, mais jamais appris à comment dire au revoir. »), sous la guitare rythmique de Pat Smear.

Il y a des albums sur la disparition qui m’ont marqué à tout jamais, je pense notamment au Post Traumatic de Mike Shinoda qui exprime à la perfection tous les sentiments et manière d’exprimer son deuil. Aujourd’hui, les Foo Fighters viennent à leur tour trouver comment guérir après la disparition de quelqu’un. L’album passe par toutes les étapes du deuil, on y ressent la rage, l’incompréhension, l’acceptation, la recherche de sens et la reconstruction. Il est évident que cet album prends une place toute particulière dans la discographie du groupe mais est et sera nécessaire pour tous qu’il devienne l’hymne d’adieu.

At a time when their future had taken a dramatic turn following the death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins, the Foo Fighters decided to rise from the ashes and write their 11th album, But Here We Are, to thrill fans again, restore hope, heal their wounds and, above all, not forget. While the Foo Fighters were created by Dave Grohl after the disappearance of Kurt Cobain, it’s also an event that « came out of nowhere » that kicks off this album on the track « Rescued ». The Foo Fighters trademark is there, you recognize the band from the first notes, and to have a track that sounds so Foo Fighters opening is a real comfort to us. « Under You » plunges us into Dave’s head, and his search for his bearings. The song is powerful, hyper-danceable and marked by a sense of joy that emanates from it. We can well imagine the live versions of this track. The danceable tone soon fades away to let us hear Dave’s whispering voice on « Hearing Voices », until we arrive at a more « raw » musical recording, as if we were in the studio with him. The album’s eponymous title track plunges us into a prog-rock universe, with the frontman’s voice transforming under the cries of pain so masterful in their roughness. How to live without the other? « The Glass » hits us right in the heart with these lyrics « I had a person I loved, and just like that, I was left to live without him ». And even though Taylor is no longer with us, Dave’s daughter Violet lends a hand on « Show Me How » with its haunting shoegaze. While Taylor’s disappearance is on everyone’s mind, the Grohl family saw the passing of Virginia Grohl, mother and grandmother of Dave and Violet, last August. Their questioning of « Who will show me how? takes on an even stronger dimension, and places Virginia as the family pillar right up to the magnificent « The Teacher ». At 10 minutes long, we’re on the lookout for a guide « You taught me how to breathe, but never how to say goodbye. »), under Pat Smear‘s rhythm guitar.

There are albums about loss that have left a lasting impression on me, such as Mike Shinoda’s Post Traumatic, which perfectly expresses all the feelings and ways of mourning. Today, it’s Foo Fighters’ turn to find out how to heal after the loss of someone. The album goes through all the stages of grief: rage, incomprehension, acceptance, the search for meaning and reconstruction. It’s clear that this album takes a very special place in the band’s discography, but it is and will be necessary for all to hear it as a farewell anthem.
