Un passage de Arch Enemy à Lille est toujours un évènement, et encore une fois en ce mois de juin cela se confirme avec un concert affichant complet plusieurs jours à l’avance. Direction donc Le Splendid pour y retrouver le groupe suédois accompagné d’AD INFINITUM et de Haliphron. A notre arrivée devant la salle, beaucoup de fans sont présents depuis de longues heures pour être au plus près des groupes. C’est parti pour une soirée qui s’annonce exceptionnelle!

On commence avec les néerlandais de Haliphron qui vont nous présenter leur symphonic black/death. Dès « The Killing Spree » la sauce prend totalement avec le public. Les headbangs sont de la partie aussi bien sur scène que dans la fosse, et les sourires sur les visages des musiciens en disent long sur l’accueil qui leur est fait. Il faut dire que musicalement c’est du tout bon! Marloes Voskuil est une véritable révélation vocale qui va nous montrer tout son talent sur « Human Inferno ». La présence des claviers de David Gutierrez Rojas est à souligner tant ils nous plongent dans l’univers symphonique du groupe. En seulement cinq petits morceaux, le groupe va enchanter le public lillois et clairement se faire de nouveaux adeptes. « Unidentified Mass » vient clôturer un set de grande qualité qui donne clairement envie d’en entendre plus au plus vite! On saluera la superbe performance de Jessica Otten à la basse tout au long du set!
On enchaine très vite avec AD INFINITUM qu’on avait très hâte de voir en live après trois excellents albums, dont le dernier en date est sorti plus tôt cette année. Le groupe arrive sur le très dansant « Eternal Rains » qui nous met tout de suite dans l’ambiance! Les morceaux du groupe prennent une véritable nouvelle vie en live et nous captent en quelques secondes. La voix de Melissa Bonny est toujours aussi impressionnante et vient magnifier les morceaux comme « Your Enemy ». On ne peut pas passer à côté de la véritable présence scénique du groupe, qu’on voit malheureusement trop peu souvent en France. Adrian Theßenvitz (guitare) et Korbinian Benedict (basse) renforcent encore notre envie de headbanger en rythme. L’ambiance est électrique dans la salle et la chaleur commence à monter fortement! « Seth » était un de nos morceaux préférés sur album, sa version live lui donne une force de frape encore plus forte. On arrive déjà en fin de set mais « Animals » nous donne une dernière chance de nous époumoner sur les paroles pendant que Niklas Müller envoie ses dernières rythmiques dansantes derrière sa batterie. Une prestation qui confirme notre amour pour la formation, qu’on espère retrouver très vite en tête d’affiche à Lille!
Il est temps d’accueillir Arch Enemy sur la scène! La salle est blindée et est déjà devenue un véritable enfer de chaleur. Le groupe suédois débarque sur « Deceiver, Deiceiver » et met tout le monde d’accord en quelques secondes. La voix de Alissa White-Gluz est parfaitement en place et nous donne envie de reprendre les morceaux en chœur avec elle (avec forcément un scream moins puissant!) Les fans sont aux anges et donnent toute leur énergie à la formation. Jeff Loomis et Michael Amott sont des guitaristes hors pair et leurs riffs destructeurs sur « War Eternal » ou « House Of Mirrors » n’en sont qu’une énième preuve, s’il le fallait encore! Impossible de rester à l’avant de la salle tant il fait chaud, on se réfugie donc près de l’air plus frais en fond de salle. Malheureusement cela devient vite suffoquant et on se retrouve obligé de sortir prendre l’air quelques minutes! (On ne dirait pas non à l’installation d’une ventilation descente dans la salle!) Le concert se poursuit ponctué par des interventions d’Alissa en Français dans le texte. Elle remercie le public d’être venu si nombreux les retrouver et enchaîne avec un « As The Pages Burn » d’anthologie. Sharlee d’Angelo (basse) et Daniel Erlandsson (batterie), eux aussi au sommet de leur art, nous balancent la rythmique dévastatrice de « We Will Rise » avant de quitter la scène. Le public en redemande et le groupe est de retour pour un rappel géant de cinq titres parmi les plus anciens de leur discographie, comme « Burning Angel » ou encore le culte « Fields Of Desolation » qui vient clôturer en beauté cette soirée.
Arch Enemy est un groupe de grand talent qui de tournée en tournée montre qu’ils sont toujours un grand nom de cette scène death mélo. Malgré la chaleur de la salle, le public lillois en a clairement pris plein les oreilles et aura profiter pleinement de cette date exceptionnelle.

We start with the Dutch band Haliphron, who present their symphonic black/death. From « The Killing Spree » onwards, the crowd are in for a real treat. Headbangs are in the air both on stage and in the pit, and the smiles on the musicians’ faces say a lot about the welcome they’ve received. It has to be said that musically, it’s all good! Marloes Voskuil is a real vocal revelation, showing off her talent to the full on ‘Human Inferno’. The presence of David Gutierrez Rojas‘ keyboards is particularly noteworthy, immersing us in the band’s symphonic universe. In just five short tracks, the band have enchanted the Lille audience and are clearly winning over new fans. « Unidentified Mass » rounds off a top-quality set that leaves you wanting to hear more as soon as possible! Jessica Otten gave a superb performance on bass throughout the set!
Next up was AD INFINITUM, who we were really looking forward to seeing live after three excellent albums, the latest of which was released earlier this year. The band arrive with the very danceable ‘Eternal Rains’, which immediately gets us in the mood! The band’s songs take on a whole new lease of life live, capturing you in a matter of seconds. Melissa Bonny’s voice is as impressive as ever, enhancing tracks like ‘Your Enemy’. You can’t miss the band’s real stage presence, which is sadly all too rare in France. Adrian Theßenvitz (guitar) and Korbinian Benedict (bass) further enhance our desire to headbang to the beat. The atmosphere in the room was electric and the heat was beginning to rise! « Seth » was one of our favourite tracks on the album, but the live version gives it an even greater impact. We’re already coming to the end of the set, but « Animals » gives us one last chance to get carried away by the lyrics, while Niklas Müller sends out his last dancing rhythms behind his drums. A performance that confirms our love for the band, who we hope to see headlining in Lille very soon!
It’s time to welcome Arch Enemy to the stage! The venue is packed to the rafters and has already become an inferno of heat. The Swedish band hit the stage with « Deceiver, Deiceiver » and got everyone on the same wavelength in a matter of seconds. Alissa White-Gluz‘s voice is perfectly in place and makes you want to sing along with her (albeit with a less powerful scream!) The fans are ecstatic and give the band all their energy. Jeff Loomis and Michael Amott are unrivalled guitarists, and their destructive riffs on ‘War Eternal’ and ‘House Of Mirrors’ are just the latest proof, if proof were needed! It’s impossible to stay at the front of the room because it’s so hot, so we take refuge near the cooler air at the back. Unfortunately it quickly became suffocating and we found ourselves obliged to go outside for a few minutes to get some fresh air! (We wouldn’t say no to installing downdraft ventilation in the hall!) The concert continued, punctuated by Alissa’s speeches in French. She thanked the audience for coming out in such numbers and followed up with an anthological ‘As The Pages Burn’. Sharlee d’Angelo (bass) and Daniel Erlandsson (drums), also at the top of their game, hit us with the devastating rhythm of « We Will Rise » before leaving the stage. The crowd went wild for more, and the band returned for a giant encore of five of the oldest tracks from their discography, including ‘Burning Angel’ and the cult classic ‘Fields Of Desolation’, which brought the evening to a fitting close.
Arch Enemy are a hugely talented band who, tour after tour, are proving that they are still a big name on the melodic death scene. Despite the heat of the venue, the Lille crowd were clearly in for an earful and will have taken full advantage of this exceptional date.
