Fan de Leprous depuis des années je ne pouvais passer à côté du premier album solo d’Einar Solberg, chanteur de la formation norvégienne. Chaque morceau dévoilé de cet album solo, intitulé 16, me donnait envie de mon plonger tête la première dans l’univers personnel du chanteur. Pour cet album il s’est entouré de ses amis musiciens ou chanteurs pour proposer une sortie personnelle. 16 est dors et déjà disponible via InsideOut Music, et je vous en parle aujourd’hui.

Le morceau titre démarre avec le jeu de violoncelle de Raphael Weinroth-Browne, celui-ci portera à lui seule toute la première partie du titre et accompagne de la plus belle des manières la voix puissamment douce d’Einar. Le musicien habitué aux compositions de Leprous retrouve ici son ami pour une chanson personnelle qui touche au cœur et qui annonce un très bel album, aussi proche que loin de ce à quoi le chanteur nous a habitué avec son groupe. On retrouve Raphael sur le titre « Metacognitive », morceau beaucoup plus électronique, entêtant qui prouve qu’avec cet album le chanteur norvégien veut nous faire rentrer au plus profond de son âme. Les compositions de Solberg sont de pures merveilles auditives! « Remember Me » par exemple laisse là aussi la place à l’expérimentation et aux sons plus électroniques.
Les singles de l’album que sont « A Beautiful Life », « Home », « Grotto » et « Over The Top » sont la plus belle preuve de la variété musicale qui règne dans cet album, et en plus ils nous permettent de découvrir ou redécouvrir le travail de Ben Levin ou de Magnus Børmark. D’ailleurs Ben Levin nous offre une partie hip hop superbe qui vient apporter un belle dose de nouveauté dans la discographie du chanteur norvégien.
« Where All The Twigs Broke » nous laisse découvrir le talent de la musicienne norvégienne Star Of Ash (aka Heidi Solberg Tveitan, la soeur du chanteur) dans un titre mené par une partie de piano restant en tête dès le premier instant. La valse des amis continue et les voix de Einar et Asger Mygind, chanteur du groupe Vola, se mêlent pour un de mes titres préférés de cet album, à savoir « Blue Light ». Puis vient le tant attendu morceau avec Ihsahn, qui tient lui-aussi toutes ses promesses! Il faut dire que leur sortie commune précédente, une reprise de « Manhattan Skyline » de A-Ha fait partie de mes titres favoris depuis sa sortie. Le dernier morceau, véritable ultime crescendo musical est porté par le travail commun du chanteur avec Tóti Guðnason, compositeur islandais et membre de l’excellent groupe Agent Fresco. Ce titre est un morceau assez proche de ce que l’on peut retrouver chez Leprous, mais toujours avec cette vision unique qu’on retrouve depuis le début de l’écoute.
Ce premier album solo de Einar Solberg, a été une véritable claque musicale! J’attendais de voir ce que l’artiste norvégien allait pouvoir nous proposer dans sa première sortie, et force est de constater qu’il a dépassé toutes mes attentes. Attendez vous à un album de prog mais pas seulement dans le sens où vous l’entendez! Ici non seulement les compositions alternent les rythmiques complexes mais en plus la variété des compositions font de cet album une pièce unique qui saura satisfaire les fans du chanteur autant que ceux prêts à s’aventurer dans un disque exigent dans le bon sens du terme et puissant par les thématiques qu’il aborde. Et enfin, il cimente le chanteur comme un de ceux qui me transmet le plus d’émotions en l’écoutant.

Having been a fan of Leprous for years, I couldn’t pass up the chance to hear the first solo album by Einar Solberg, lead singer of the Norwegian band. Each track released from this solo album, entitled 16, made me want to dive headfirst into the singer’s personal universe. For this album, he has surrounded himself with his musician and singer friends to offer a personal release. 16 is already available via InsideOut Music, and I’m talking to you about it today.

The title track kicks off with Raphael Weinroth-Browne‘s cello playing, which carries the whole first part of the track and accompanies Einar‘s powerfully gentle voice in the most beautiful way. The musician used to Leprous compositions reunites here with his friend for a personal song that touches the heart and heralds a very fine album, as close as it is far from what the singer has accustomed us to with his band. We meet up with Raphael again on ‘Metacognitive’, a much more electronic, heady track which proves that with this album the Norwegian singer wants to take us deep into his soul. Solberg‘s compositions are pure aural marvels! « Remember Me », for example, also gives way to experimentation and more electronic sounds.
The album’s singles, « A Beautiful Life », « Home », « Grotto » and « Over The Top », are the best proof of the musical variety on this album, and they also allow us to discover or rediscover the work of Ben Levin and Magnus Børmark. In fact, Ben Levin offers us a superb hip hop section that adds a nice dose of novelty to the Norwegian singer’s discography.
« Where All The Twigs Broke » reveals the talent of Norwegian musician Star Of Ash (aka Heidi Solberg Tveitan, the singer’s sister) in a track led by a piano part that stays in your head from the first moment. The waltz of friends continues and the voices of Einar and Asger Mygind, lead singer of the band Vola, blend together for one of my favourite tracks on this album, ‘Blue Light’. Then comes the long-awaited track with Ihsahn, which also lives up to all its promises! It has to be said that their previous joint release, a cover of A-Ha‘s « Manhattan Skyline », has been one of my favourite tracks since its release. The final track, the ultimate musical crescendo, is driven by the singer’s joint work with Tóti Guðnason, an Icelandic composer and member of the excellent band Agent Fresco. This track is pretty close to what you’d expect from Leprous, but still with that unique vision you’ve been hearing from the start.
Einar Solberg‘s debut solo album was a musical slap in the face! I’d been waiting to see what the Norwegian artist would come up with in his first release, and I have to say that he has exceeded all my expectations. Expect a prog album, but not just in the sense you’d expect! Here, not only do the compositions alternate between complex rhythms, but the variety of the compositions makes this album a unique piece of work that will satisfy fans of the singer as much as those ready to venture into an album that is demanding in the good sense of the word and powerful in the themes it tackles. And finally it cements the singer as one of those who give me the most emotions while listening to his voice.
