Les parisiens de NUMA ont sorti début juin un nouvel EP. Intitulé Nénuphar, il est disponible via Odyssey Music Network. Le groupe de prog rock intrigue avec la jolie pochette réalisée par Marie Mauve, qu’en sera-t-il niveau musical ? On a hâte de le découvrir!

Cet EP démarre en force avec « Esodo (Preludio) » qui nous montré déjà tout le talent des musiciens pour créer de belles ambiances avec des instrumentations parfaitement maîtrisées. Cet EP s’articule autour des témoignages présents dans le documentaire Human de Yann Arthurs-Bertrand. Composé comme une seule unité musicale, on y retrouve trois morceaux avec paroles entourés de trois pièces instrumentales pensées comme des prolongements des histoires racontées. « Raising Me Up » nous enveloppe dans un post-prog assez impressionnant, qu’on prend quelques secondes à apréhender avant de s’y plonger tête la première. Vocalement, Riccardo Morgante n’est pas sans nous rappeler des pontes du genre tels Neal Morse ou Roine Stolt sur certains passages, avec en plus une tessiture vocale folle qui lui est propre. Les duos basse/batterie formé par Guillaume Varache et Quentin Guerin d’une part et Flavio Hayer d’autre part sont dingues de maîtrise et ont chacun une sonorité reconnaissable. Sur « Cold Played Hope », le groupe nous emmène vers des territoires encore inexplorés où d’autres influences ressortent, et où les guitares de Mickaël Serra sont un pur plaisir pour les oreilles avec leurs sonorités plus variées les unes que les autres. Le dernier interlude instrumental confirme le talent de chaque musicien avant un final en apothéose dans le dernier titre, « I Can’t Hold On Any Longer »! Ce dernier nous rappelle que le thème de cet EP, à savoir l’immigration et ses traumatismes, nous concerne tous! Musicalement on retrouve le talent de composition qui a primé tout au long de cet EP et on s’en délecte note après note.
La découverte de NUMA et de Nénuphar nous confirme l’excellente santé de la scène prog française! La qualité de cette sortie n’a rien a envier à ce que les groupes majeurs du genre peuvent sortir, et on se demande encore pourquoi le groupe n’a pas une notoriété déjà beaucoup plus importante! On ne peux que vous conseiller de vous y plonger tête la première et de profiter de cette belle histoire musicale racontée tout au long de l’écoute. On espère avoir la chance de découvrir le groupe en live au plus vite et on vous encourage à aller les voir près de chez vous!

Parisian band NUMA released a new EP at the beginning of June. Entitled Nénuphar, it’s available via Odyssey Music Network. The prog rock band’s pretty cover art by Marie Mauve is intriguing, but what about the music? We can’t wait to find out!
This EP kicks off with a bang with ‘Esodo (Preludio)’, which already shows the musicians’ talent for creating beautiful atmospheres with perfectly mastered instrumentation. The EP is built around the testimonies in Yann Arthurs-Bertrand‘s documentary Human. Composed as a single musical unit, it features three tracks with lyrics surrounded by three instrumental pieces conceived as extensions of the stories told. « Raising Me Up’ wraps us up in some pretty impressive post-prog, which takes a few seconds to get to grips with before diving in headfirst. Vocally, Riccardo Morgante is reminiscent of the likes of Neal Morse and Roine Stolt on certain passages, with his own unique vocal range. The bass/drums duos formed by Guillaume Varache and Quentin Guerin on the one hand and Flavio Hayer on the other are insanely masterful, each with their own recognisable sound. On ‘Cold Played Hope’, the band take us into unexplored territory where other influences come to the fore, and where Mickaël Serra‘s guitars are a pure pleasure to listen to, with their varied sounds. The final instrumental interlude confirms the talent of each musician before a climactic finale in the last track, « I Can’t Hold On Any Longer »! This last track reminds us that the theme of this EP, immigration and its traumas, concerns us all! Musically, we’re back to the compositional talent that has prevailed throughout this EP, and we’re revelling in it note after note.
The discovery of NUMA and Nénuphar confirms the excellent health of the French prog scene! The quality of this release has nothing to envy the major bands of the genre, and we’re still wondering why the band isn’t much better known already! All we can recommend is that you dive in head first and enjoy the beautiful musical story told throughout. We hope to have the chance to discover the band live as soon as possible, and we encourage you to go and see them near you!
