Les américains de Signs of the Swarm nous font le plaisir de sortir en cette fin juillet leur cinquième album, intitulé Amongst The Low & Empty, via Century Media. Un bel album de deathcore très prometteur, pour ne pas nous ennuyer durant cet été assez calme !

La voix massacrante de David Simonich lance les hostilités, comme un cri du coeur sur le titre éponyme. Fraichement signé chez Century Media, ils sont prêt à tout démolir sur leur passage. Les cris sont d’une profondeur dévastatrice, on est ici face à une belle prouesse vocale. Les musiciens ne sont pas en reste, et érige le récit de « Tower of Torsos » avec brio. La montée vers le statue de Dieu se fait en vertu de massacre et de sang! La batterie de Bobby Crow gronde alors que les élements se déchainent. Les prières n’offriront aucune réponse que la mort growlé par notre chanteur sur le morceau « Pray For Death ». L’enfer des ténébres et de la mort laisse tout de même place à des riffs beaucoup plus mélodique sur « Borrowed Time ». Alors que notre démon est enfermé dans sa tombe ou plutôt son trône, on entends litérallement les cris venu des enfers sur « Between Fire & Stone ». On reste bouche bée d’une telle prouesse vocale, parfaitement soutenu par l’intégralité des musiciens jouant à battre le record de notes grasses à la minute. Je n’ose imaginer l’état du pit pendant ce titre en concert. La boucherie se dessine dans notre imaginaire. Petit temps pour respirer avec « Shackles Like Talons », ou du moins sur les premiers instants. Carl Schulz, qui vient de rejoindre le groupe cet année est impressionant avec ces riffs crescendo. Les chants en choeur viennent prendre une place de choix dans la composition de « Dreamkiller », offrant l’opportunité d’un solo de guitare qui dénote le reste des compositions. On aime ce type de surprise.
Parlant de surprise, on découvre la venue de Matthew K. Heafy, leader charismatique de Trivium pour le morceau « The Witch Beckons ». Violence is the new hype ? Sa voix puissante trouve parfaitement sa place dans le deathcore et s’allie parfaitement à celle de David qui fera même un growl de 15 secondes ! Entouré de serpents et de vipères, les portes de l’enfer s’ouvrent sur « Echelon ». Pas le temps d’avoir du repos, les morceaux s’enchainent avec un duo rythmique basse batterie ravageur. Le groupe tente même avec « Faces Without Names » d’introduire des sonorités très industrielles, presque électronique. On cloture cet album avec « Malady » venant nous démolir en plein coeur, comme toutes ces maladies qui dévorent les personnes allant jusqu’au suicide.
Signs of the Swarm ne sont pas là pour faire dans la dentelle. Les américains débarquent chez Century Media avec un album d’une puissance folle. C’est gras, c’est lourd, c’est du très très bon deathcore. On est actuellement dans une superbe période où le deathcore est décomplexé, invitant des artistes d’autres genres, pour de belles démonstrations de la force de ce style musicale.

American band Signs of the Swarm are delighted to be releasing their fifth album, Amongst The Low & Empty, via Century Media at the end of July. It’s a fine, promising deathcore album that’s sure to keep us on our toes during this fairly quiet summer!

David Simonich‘s devastating voice kicks off the hostilities like a cry from the heart on the eponymous track. Freshly signed to Century Media, they are ready to demolish everything in their path. The screams are devastatingly deep, and the vocal prowess is outstanding. The musicians are not to be outdone, building the narrative of « Tower of Torsos » with brio. The ascent to the statue of God is all bloodshed and slaughter! Bobby Crow‘s drums roar as the elements rage. Prayers will offer no answer other than the death growled by our singer on the track « Pray For Death ». The hell of darkness and death does give way to some much more melodic riffs on ‘Borrowed Time’. While our demon is locked in his tomb, or rather his throne, you can literally hear the screams coming from the underworld on ‘Between Fire & Stone’. You’re left speechless by such vocal prowess, perfectly supported by all the musicians playing a record number of fat notes per minute. I can’t imagine what the pit would be like during this track in concert. The butchery takes shape in our imagination. « Shackles Like Talons » takes a breather, or at least the first few moments. Carl Schulz, who has just joined the band this year, is impressive with his crescendo of riffs. Chorus vocals take pride of place in the composition of « Dreamkiller », offering the opportunity for a guitar solo that stands out from the rest of the compositions. We love this kind of surprise.
Speaking of surprises, Matthew K. Heafy, charismatic frontman of Trivium, on the track ‘The Witch Beckons’. Violence is the new hype? His powerful voice is perfectly at home in deathcore, and combines perfectly with David’s, who even does a 15-second growl! Surrounded by snakes and vipers, the gates of hell open on ‘Echelon’. There’s no time for rest, as the tracks follow each other with a devastating rhythmic bass-drum duet. With ‘Faces Without Names’, the band even try to introduce some very industrial, almost electronic sounds. The album closes with « Malady », a heartbreaker like all those diseases that devour people to the point of suicide.
Signs of the Swarm are not in the business of playing around. The Americans land on Century Media with an album of insane power. It’s fat, it’s heavy, it’s really, really good deathcore. We’re currently in a superb period where deathcore is uninhibited, inviting artists from other genres to demonstrate the strength of this musical style.
Sounding Shivers
