The Gorge, groupe originaire de St Louis, nous propose en cette fin juillet de découvrir leur tout nouvel album. Intitulé Mechanical Fiction, il sera disponible dès le 28 juillet via Pelagic Records. La formation prog métal a déjà marqué les auditeurs avec des albums d’excellente facture, qu’en sera t’il pour cette toute nouvelle livraison musicale?

Le premier morceau, qui est aussi un des titres déjà disponibles, nous annonce directement la couleur avec les riffs de Joe Bowers et Phil Ring qui nous frappent par leur technicité et leur puissance folle. Phil ajoute sa voix hurlée aux instruments pour un titre qui annonce un album sans concessions qui frappera fort! On poursuit avec un titre assez différent qui garde le côté très technique du premier et une violence bien présente, mais en y ajoutant des sons plus proches du djent. On sent que le groupe veux nous faire voyager dans tout ce que le prog métal et ses années d’évolution peut proposer. En tout cas, en deux titres les américains envoient du très très lourd. Tout au long de l’album, la section rythmique portée par Chris Turnbaugh à la basse et Jerry Mazzuca à la batterie fait clairement des merveilles. Impossible de ne pas bouger la tête sur les rythmes et tempos très variés des compositions. « A Decision Was Made » est clairement un autre grand moment de cet album! Le titre est un peu plus court mais arrive à nous transmettre toute la puissance dans chacun des riffs. Les musiciens du groupe viennent du jazz et on le sent dans des titres comme « Earthly Decay », où les rythmiques et les lignes de basse en sont tout droit tirées. Le morceau titre est un interlude musical de grande qualité nous emmenant doucement au dernier titre de cet album. Véritable résumé de tout ce que cet album a pu proposer « Wraith » nous en met une dernière fois plein la vue avec une puissance musicale non dissimulée, qui laisse à chaque musicien une place de choix pour exprimer tout son talent. Encore une fois Phil fait des merveilles de sa voix et nous laisse imaginer la puissance que celle-ci pourrait avoir en live!
The Gorge proposent avec Mechanical Fiction ce que le prog métal peut proposer de mieux. Les influences musicales sont multiples tout au long de l’album et font de l’écoute un véritable plaisir. Les huit titres de cette nouvelle sortie des américains ont tous quelque chose de bien particulier à nous donner, et on sait que chaque nouvelle écoute va nous révéler de nouvelles choses sur les compositions. Un album puissant qu’on ne peut que vous encourager à écouter!

At the end of July, St Louis band The Gorge will be releasing their brand new album. Entitled Mechanical Fiction, it will be available from 28 July via Pelagic Records. The prog-metal outfit have already made their mark on listeners with some excellent albums, so what’s next for this latest musical offering?
The first track, which is also one of the tracks already available, sets the tone straight away with the riffs of Joe Bowers and Phil Ring, striking us with their technicality and insane power. Phil adds his screaming vocals to the instruments on a track that heralds an uncompromising album that will hit hard! We continue with a rather different track that retains the highly technical side of the first and the violence that is very much present, but adds sounds that are closer to djent. It’s clear that the band want to take us on a journey through all that prog metal and its years of evolution have to offer. In any case, in just two tracks, the Americans deliver some very, very heavy stuff. Throughout the album, the rhythm section, led by Chris Turnbaugh on bass and Jerry Mazzuca on drums, clearly works wonders. It’s impossible not to bob your head to the varied rhythms and tempos of the compositions. « A Decision Was Made » is clearly another highlight of this album! The track is a little shorter but manages to convey all the power in each of the riffs. The band’s musicians come from a jazz background, and you can feel it in tracks like ‘Earthly Decay’, where the rhythms and bass lines are straight out of it. The title track is a musical interlude of the highest quality, leading us gently into the final track of the album. Wraith’ sums up everything this album has to offer, giving us one last showcase of undisguised musical power, leaving each musician free rein to express his or her talent to the full. Once again Phil works wonders with his voice, and lets us imagine how powerful it could be live!
With Mechanical Fiction, The Gorge give the very best that prog metal has to offer. The musical influences are manifold throughout the album, making it a real pleasure to listen to. The eight tracks on this new release from the Americans all have something very special to give us, and we know that each new listen will reveal new things about the compositions. A powerful album that we can only encourage you to listen to!
