Comme une entrée de scène, l’album démarre avec « Bogus Operandi » prenant le temps de faire monter la tension comme si nous n’étions pas déjà assez impatient de les retrouver. La voix de Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist est toujours aussi inchangé d’année en année. Leur univers rock n’a rien perdu en puissance et on se balade entre les titres dansants qui ont tous une formule magique : des riffs efficaces qui restent en tête, des paroles simples à retenir qui peuvent vite se chanter à l’unisson et super une joie de vivre qui s’en dégage.

Et même si sur la pochette de l’album, on est au fond d’une tombe prêt à se faire enterrer par le groupe, on est bel et bien vivant à bouger avec la guitare de Mikael Karlsson. Les morceaux sont un preuve de la force d’un bon titre rock. « Smoke & Mirrors » explore les souvenirs punk de notre adolescence, et ça tombe bien car l’adolescence, c’est bien ce qui nous vient en tête lorsqu’on écoute The Hives. On se revoit dans les pits infernaux dégoulinants ou à nos premiers gros festivals. Ils ont marqué mon adolescence, et je suis ravi qu’à quasiment 30 ans, je peux toujours autant m’amuser sur leur musique.

Alors que l’on est censé vivre la mort de Randy Fitzsimmons, il semble toujours bien vivant ! Pour ceux qui ne sont pas familier, Randy est le sixième membre fictif (ou non ?) de The Hives qui a signé l’intégralité des morceaux et qui dirige le groupe tel des pantins. Les musiciens se sont-ils vraiment rebellés et enterrés leur chef d’orchestre ? Quoi qu’il en soit, les suédois semblent bien gérer les ennuis comme sur « Two Kinds Of Trouble » dont le son de guitare sonne comme une ampli mal branché, mais de manière agréable. Ce genre de distortion musicale ne disparait pas sur « The Way The Story Goes » qui donne comme une impression d’entendre un fantôme dans nos appareils électroniques de détection de champ électromagnétique.

Randy Fitzsimmons est mort ! Vive The Hives! Les suédois font un retour de force dans la scène rock et punk avec cet album scintillant et toujours aussi fou. On est pleinement dans la tête d’un adolescent qui découvre la folie et la liberté. On vole de morceaux en morceaux, sans jamais se reposer. On explore, on se laisse enivrer jusqu’à l’ivresse. Quand on connait leur talent sur scène à mettre l’ambiance, on n’est pas prêt pour cette nouvelle décénnie de concert.

Like a stage opener, the album kicks off with ‘Bogus Operandi’, taking the time to build up the tension as if we weren’t already impatient enough to get back to them. Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist‘s voice is as unchanged as ever. Their rock universe hasn’t lost any of its power, and you’ll find yourself wandering between danceable tracks that all have the same magic formula: effective riffs that stay in your head, easy-to-remember lyrics that can quickly be sung in unison and, above all, a joie de vivre that emanates from them.

And even if the album cover shows you at the bottom of a grave, ready to be buried by the band, you’re alive and kicking with Mikael Karlsson‘s guitar. The tracks are proof of the power of a good rock song. « Smoke & Mirrors » explores the punk memories of our adolescence, and that’s just as well, because adolescence is what comes to mind when you listen to The Hives. It’s a good thing, because adolescence is what comes to mind when you listen to The Hives. They left their mark on my adolescence, and I’m delighted that, at nearly 30, I can still have so much fun listening to their music.

While we’re supposed to be living through the death of Randy Fitzsimmons, he still seems very much alive! For those who aren’t familiar, Randy is the fictional (or not?) sixth member of The Hives who wrote all the songs and runs the band like puppets. Did the musicians really rebel and bury their conductor? Be that as it may, the Swedes seem to handle trouble well, as on « Two Kinds Of Trouble », whose guitar sound is like a badly plugged amp, but in a pleasant way. This kind of musical distortion doesn’t disappear on « The Way The Story Goes », which sounds like a ghost in our electronic electromagnetic field detection devices.

Randy Fitzsimmons is dead! Long live The Hives! The Swedes are making a major comeback on the rock and punk scene with this scintillating album, as crazy as ever. We’re fully inside the head of a teenager discovering madness and freedom. You fly from track to track, never resting. You’re exploring, intoxicated to the point of intoxication. And if you know their talent for setting the mood on stage, you won’t be ready for this new decade of concerts.
