Trois ans après la sortie de leur tout premier album, Point North sortent ce vendredi 18 août leur deuxieme opus, intitulé Prepare For The Despair, via Hopeless Records. Alors que les premiers singles sortis prennent une place de choix dans les charts américain et anglais, on ne pouvait certainement pas passer à côté de cet album. Fan de rock alternatif, pop-rock, punk-rock, c’est pour vous !

Si le nom Point North ne vous parle pas encore, pas d’inquiétude, le groupe n’a juste pas encore fait de passage dans les salles Françaises. En attendant leur venue, on s’aventure sur les biographies des membres du groupe, et on reste bouche bée. Jon Lundin au chant et à la production a notamment co-écrit et produit pour Coheed & Cambria, Atreyu, Zero 9:36, ou encore le magnifique « Zombified » de Falling In Reverse. De quoi nous impressionner. Et si ce n’était que ça ! A la batterie, on retrouve Sage Weeber qui a joué avec Andy Black, ou encore Avril Lavigne. Est-ce que c’est bon pour vous ? Les premières notes semblent nous emmener vers une mélodie assez trap, et pourtant, dès la guitare de Andy Hershey en marche, c’est vers un skate punk bande son à la matrix qu’on s’embarque avec « Like A Weapon ». Avec une telle introduction, on est prêt à s’aventurer vers de beaux mélanges de sonorités. Alors que leur premier album était marqué par un featuring avec Kellin Quinn de Sleeping with Sirens, c’est cette fois-ci The Ghost Inside qui s’invite sur le morceau « Safe and Sound ». Le titre profondément rock associe le piano, et les élements électro pour proposer une composition entêtante, jusqu’au beau breakdown offert sous les cris de Jonathan Vigil. L’utilisation de breakdown ne sera pas réservé pour ce titre, en prouve le très beau de « Below The Belt ». Les titres s’enchaînent avec toujours autant d’énergie et reprenant les codes du punk-rock américain. Rien de bien révolutionnaire dans les compositions, mais on se conforte dans ce qu’on connait et on aime. De mon côté, c’est « Up On A Hill » qui marquera mon écoute, avec son semblant de Ice Nine Kills. Ce level-up en violence prends encore plus d’ampleur sur « Recover » et ses distortions sonores.
Point North proposent un bon album de rock alternatif, ne prenant pas trop de risques, mais proposant des compositions efficaces et entêtantes. Ils trouveront assez facilement leur public comme lors de leur passage au Slam Dunk un peu plus tôt cette année.

If the name Point North still doesn’t ring a bell, don’t worry, the band just haven’t played any French venues yet. While we’re waiting for their arrival, we’ll take a look at the biographies of the band members, and we’ll be amazed. Jon Lundin on vocals and production has co-written and produced for Coheed & Cambria, Atreyu, Zero 9:36 and Falling In Reverse‘s magnificent ‘Zombified’. It’s enough to impress us. And if that’s all it was! On drums, we find Sage Weeber, who has played with Andy Black, and Avril Lavigne. Is this good for you? Having finished reading the CVs, let’s get down to listening to Prepare For The Despair.
The first notes seem to take us towards a rather trap melody, but as soon as Andy Hershey‘s guitar kicks in, it’s into a matrix-style skate punk soundtrack that we embark on « Like A Weapon ». With an introduction like that, we’re ready to venture into some fine mixes of sounds. While their first album featured a guest appearance from Kellin Quinn of Sleeping with Sirens, this time it’s The Ghost Inside who make an appearance on ‘Safe and Sound’. The deeply rocking track combines piano and electro elements to create a heady composition, culminating in a beautiful breakdown as Jonathan Vigil screams. The use of breakdowns is not confined to this track, as evidenced by the beautiful « Below The Belt ». The tracks follow on from each other with as much energy as ever, using the codes of American punk-rock. There’s nothing really revolutionary about the compositions, but we’re comforted by what we know and love. As far as I’m concerned, it’s ‘Up On A Hill’ that stands out for me, with its Ice Nine Kills feel. This level-up in violence takes on an even greater dimension on « Recover » and its sonic distortions.
Point North offer a good album of alternative rock, not taking too many risks, but offering effective, heady compositions. They’re sure to find an audience, as they did at Slam Dunk earlier this year.
