Crée en 2013, le groupe indie punk américain Spanish Love Songs a déjà sorti trois albums tous acclamés par la critique, et ont acquis un grand nombre de fan grace à des paroles puissantes et très personnelles. Cette année, le groupe nous dévoile son quatrième album studio. Intitulé No Joy, il est disponible depuis le 25 août dernier via Pure Noise Records. Que nous réservent les américains avec cette nouvelle sortie?

On commence très fort avec « Lifers » qui nous offre tout ce qui fait de Spanish Love Songs un groupe mémorable! Déjà, la voix si reconnaissable de Dylan Slocum nous livre des histoires racontées avec brio, et avec un chant qui vous emporte en quelques secondes. L’influence punk est bien évidemment bien présente mais le côté doux des synthés de Meredith Van Woert apporte ce petit plus qu’on adore retrouver de sortie en sortie. Les guitares sont douces et donnent à « Pendulum » ou encore « Clean-Up Crew » cette marque indélébile dans nos esprits. Ce travail remarquable des sons de guitare est à attribuer au duo formé par Dylan et Kyle McAulay, duo qui semble se renforcer années après années. « Clean-Up Crew » donne aussi à Trevor Dietrich une occasion de faire résonner sa basse dans nos oreilles sur des couplets entêtants. En quelques morceaux les américains nous touchent au coeur une fois encore et on sent que la suite nous réserve encore de belles surprises. Tout au long de l’album la batterie de Ruben Duarte alterne entre parties rythmées à souhaits et moment plus doux qui viennent nous cueillir quand il le faut. Encore une fois, « I’m Gonna Miss Everything » est une véritable oeuvre vocale de Dylan, qui vient nous chercher dans l’émotion et nous enchanter avec sa voix unique. « Mutable » et « Exit Bags » donnent une dernière fois l’occasion de savourer la qualité des titres des américains et des instrumentations toutes plus mémorables les unes que les autres. Puis « Re-Emerging Signs of the Apocalypse » vient nous mettre un dernier coup derrière la tête avec ce titre véritable résumé de tout ce qu’on vient d’entendre depuis le début. Les claviers sont là en force, les guitares aussi et surtout cette virevoltante habilité des cinq américains à émouvoir avec des refrains majestueux.
No Joy est la quintessence de ce que Spanish Love Songs nous ont offert depuis leurs débuts. L’album est une succession de titres inoubliables, de rythmes entêtants et d’images qui nous restent en tête grâce à cette force d’écriture. Une réussite qui rejoint instantanément le top de l’année! Spanish Love Songs nous ont donne leur meilleur et on en redemande!

Formed in 2013, American indie punk band Spanish Love Songs have already released three critically acclaimed albums, gaining a huge fan base thanks to their powerful and highly personal lyrics. This year, the band unveil their fourth studio album. Entitled No Joy, it has been available since 25 August via Pure Noise Records. What do the Americans have in store for us with this new release?
We get off to a great start with ‘Lifers’, which has everything that makes Spanish Love Songs such a memorable band! Dylan Slocum‘s recognisable voice delivers stories told with brio, and with vocals that take you away in a matter of seconds. The punk influence is obviously there, but Meredith Van Woert‘s mellow synths add that extra something we love to hear time and time again. The guitars are soft and give « Pendulum » and « Clean-Up Crew » that indelible mark on our minds. This remarkable work on the guitar sounds can be attributed to the duo formed by Dylan and Kyle McAulay, a duo that seems to grow stronger with each passing year. « Clean-Up Crew » also gives Trevor Dietrich a chance to make his bass resonate in our ears on some heady verses. In just a few tracks, the Americans have once again touched our hearts, and we can feel that there are more surprises in store for us. Throughout the album, Ruben Duarte‘s drums alternate between rhythmic parts and softer moments that grab you when you need them. Once again, « I’m Gonna Miss Everything » is a true work of vocal art from Dylan, who draws us in with emotion and delights us with his unique voice. « Mutable » and « Exit Bags » give us one last opportunity to savour the quality of the American songs and the instrumentals, each more memorable than the last. « Re-Emerging Signs of the Apocalypse » is the final blow to the back of our heads, a track that sums up everything we’ve heard so far. The keyboards are there in force, as are the guitars, and above all the twirling ability of the five Americans to move us with their majestic choruses.
