Après un concert mémorable à The Black Lab un peu plus tôt cette année, qui laissait déjà entrevoir la suite, les suédois de Soen nous proposent de découvrir leur sixième album. Intitulé Memorial, il sera disponible le 1er septembre prochain via Silver Lining Music. Que nous réserve le groupe de prog métal pour cette nouvelle sortie, qui fait suite à l’excellent Imperial?

On commence l’album avec de belles sonorités de guitare offertes par Cody Ford et Lars Enok Åhlund. La rythmique est énergique et annonce un album allant chercher dans ce que le prog métal peut proposer de meilleur. Martin Lopez est en grande forme derrière sa batterie et ne nous laisse aucun répit, ou presque, sur cette première composition. On retrouve dans les titres suivants le groupe qu’on aime tant, avec ces morceaux alternants tempos rapides et beaucoup plus lents, laissant éclater la performance vocale de Joel Ekelöf. L’envie du groupe de nous retourner l’esprit est bien visible sur des titres comme « Violence », où la basse de Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel vient résonner dans nos oreilles tout comme les claviers de Lars. Pas étonnant que ce titre fasse parti des morceaux déjà dévoilés, tant il représente cette nouvelle évolution du groupe.
Impossible de ne pas headbanger sur « Fortress » qui est un des titres les plus surprenants de cet album. Sur « Hollowed » la chanteuse Elisa vient poser sa voix et la mêler sans effort à celle Joel, dans un morceau majestueux qui laisse les émotions parler. Déjà arrivés en milieu d’album, on se dit que les suédois nous proposent là un de leurs albums les plus variés musicalement. Le morceau titre est majestueux et emporte tout sur son passage, tandis que « Tragedian » nous cueille dans la douceur et les émotions brutes, transmises avec brio par la voix et les instruments. On termine ce nouvel album des suédois avec deux titres qui confirment tout ce qu’on vous dit depuis le début! Les compositions savent se renouveler tout en formant un tout incroyablement cohérent servi par un son parfaitement mixé laissant à chaque instrument une place de choix.
Avec Memorial, Soen proposent un album mêlant habilement prog métal énergique et morceaux plus doux. On retrouve le talent des suédois pour nous offrir des morceaux imparables qui marquent dès la première écoute. Il vient sans effort s’ajouter à ce bel édifice qu’est la discographie du groupe. On vous invite à vous plonger dedans au plus vite!

After a memorable gig at The Black Lab earlier this year, which already hinted at what was to come, Sweden’s Soen are back with their sixth album. Entitled Memorial, it will be available on 1 September via Silver Lining Music. What does the prog metal band have in store for us on this new release, which follows on from the excellent Imperial?
The album begins with some fine guitar sounds from Cody Ford and Lars Enok Åhlund. The rhythm is energetic and heralds an album that draws on the best prog metal has to offer. Martin Lopez is in top form behind the drums, and gives us little or no respite on this first track. In the following tracks, we find the band we love so much, with these tracks alternating between fast and much slower tempos, letting Joel Ekelöf‘s vocal performance shine through. The band’s desire to turn our heads is clearly evident on tracks like ‘Violence’, where Oleksii ‘Zlatoyar’ Kobel‘s bass resonates in our ears, as do Lars‘ keyboards. It’s hardly surprising that this track is one of those already unveiled, so representative is it of the band’s new evolution.
It’s impossible not to headbang to ‘Fortress’, one of the most surprising tracks on this album. On ‘Hollowed’, Elisa‘s voice blends effortlessly with Joel‘s in a majestic track that lets the emotions do the talking. Already halfway through the album, it’s clear that the Swedes are offering us one of their most musically varied albums yet. The title track is majestic and takes everything in its stride, while ‘Tragedian’ plucks us into the softness and raw emotions, brilliantly conveyed by the vocals and instruments. We end this new album from the Swedes with two tracks that confirm everything we’ve been saying all along! The compositions are fresh and innovative, yet form an incredibly coherent whole served by a perfectly mixed sound that gives each instrument its rightful place.
With Memorial, Soen offer an album that skilfully blends energetic prog metal with softer tracks. The Swedes’ talent for delivering unstoppable tracks that leave a lasting impression from the very first listen is evident. It’s an effortless addition to the band’s impressive discography.
