Découverts en première partie de Devin Townsend en mars dernier avec une prestation qu’on a encore en tête, les norvégiens de Fixation nous dévoilent en cette rentrée leur tout premier album studio. Intitulé More Subtle Than Death, il sera disponible le 8 septembre via Indie Recordings. Leur mélange de metalcore et de rock calibré pour les stades nous avait bluffé, on se lance donc dans l’écoute de cet album avec une hâte non dissimulée.

L’intro « Impending Fallout » nous plonge dans un crescendo faisant apparaitre de plus en plus clairement la voix de Jonas Hansen avant une orchestration puissante qui nous laisse entrevoir ce qui nous attend. « More Alive » vient nous chercher avec sa rythmique énergique à souhait servie par la batterie de Øla Dønnem. Ce qui nous avait marqué en live nous revient en pleine face ici, le groupe est déjà incroyablement prêt à nous en mettre plein la vue. On retrouve dans leurs morceaux des bribes de plein de groupes qu’on adore, comme Bring Me The Horizon ou encore Imminence et Architects. Mais c’est bien leur identité qui s’exprime pleinement dans des titres comme « Stay Awake ». Le refrain de ce morceau est clairement calibré pour des chœurs du public en live, et on sait que ça sera le cas!
Le duo de guitares formé par Martin Selen et Tobias Østerdal se renouvèle constamment côté riff et nous laisse profiter d’une musique énergique mais qui garde son émotion à chaque instant. « Ignore The Disarray », le titre le plus marquant à nos yeux de leur set de mars, a toutes les cartes pour être une des compositions majeures qui marquera le genre. La voix de Jonas y est douce et puissante à la fois et la ligne de basse de Martin Gravdal est absolument imparable! Les sujets abordés dans les morceaux incluent la crise climatique, la santé mentale et bien d’autres thèmes très actuels. Et ils sont tous parfaitement mis en avant par des compositions comme « Flat Earth » ou encore le magnifique « Bleed », beaucoup plus doux que les autres morceaux de l’album mais laissant une place de choix aux émotions.
Les trois derniers titres sont une fois encore des hymnes qui trouveront sans aucun doute leur public. « Violent Tendencies » et « Dystopia » forment un duo parfait pour clore ce premier album. Les deux débordent de tout ce qui a fait de cette écoute un véritable plaisir, et cette capacité folle à mêler douceur et puissance. Ils nous laissent avec une envie folle de retrouver le groupe en live!
Fixation arrivent avec More Subtle Than Death a proposer un album très réussi, qui montre déjà une très grande maturité musicale et une envie de se démarquer. Amateurs de post hardcore, de metalcore et de rock en général cet album est pour vous! Les norvégiens frappent très fort et nous donnent envie de vite découvrir la suite de leurs aventures musicales. En tout cas, comptez sur nous pour suivre tout ça de près!

Discovered as support act for Devin Townsend last March, with a performance that’s still fresh in our minds, Norway’s Fixation are unveiling their debut studio album this autumn. Entitled More Subtle Than Death, it will be available on 8 September via Indie Recordings. We were blown away by their blend of metalcore and stadium rock, so we’re looking forward to listening to this album.
The intro to « Impending Fallout » plunges us into a crescendo, with Jonas Hansen‘s voice coming through more and more clearly before a powerful orchestration gives us a glimpse of what’s to come. « More Alive » picks us up with its energetic rhythm served up by Øla Dønnem’s drums. What impressed us live comes back to bite us in the ass here, and the band are already incredibly ready to blow us away. Their songs contain snippets of many of the bands we love, such as Bring Me The Horizon, Imminence and Architects. But it’s their identity that really shines through on tracks like ‘Stay Awake’. The chorus of this track is clearly calibrated for live audience choruses, and we know it will be!
The guitar duo of Martin Selen and Tobias Østerdal are constantly renewing their riffs, giving us an energetic sound that retains its emotion at all times. « Ignore The Disarray », the stand-out track from their March set, has all the makings of a major contribution to the genre. Jonas‘s voice is both gentle and powerful, and Martin Gravdal’s bass line is absolutely unstoppable! The subjects addressed in the tracks include the climate crisis, mental health and many other highly topical themes. And they’re all perfectly highlighted by compositions like ‘Flat Earth’ and the magnificent ‘Bleed’, which is much softer than the other tracks on the album but still leaves plenty of room for emotion.
The last three tracks are once again anthems that are sure to find their audience. « Violent Tendencies » and « Dystopia » form the perfect duo to close this first album. The two are brimming with everything that made listening to this album such a pleasure, with their uncanny ability to blend gentleness and power. They leave us craving to see the band live again!
With More Subtle Than Death, Fixation have come up with a highly successful album that already shows great musical maturity and a desire to stand out from the crowd. Fans of post hardcore, metalcore and rock in general, this is the album for you! The Norwegians have hit the nail on the head, making us want to hear more of their musical adventures. In any case, you can count on us to keep a close eye on their career!
