Après quatre albums largement encensés par la critique et le public, les belges de BEAR nous reviennent cet automne avec leur cinquième effort studio. Intitulé Vanta, il sera disponible dès le 29 septembre prochain via Pelagic Records. Propaganda, leur album précédent nous avait retourné, on a hâte de découvrir ce que celui-ci nous réserve.

Les deux premiers titres nous envoient en pleine face ce qui fait le charme du groupe d’Anvers, un hardcore puissant tiré du meilleur des 90’s parsemé d’influences d’autres genres dont le métal progressif. Cette dernière est d’ailleurs bien présente dans « Defeatist », avec l’incursion remarquée d’un saxophone en plein milieu du titre.  Impossible de ne pas laisse les titres du combo résonner au plus fort dans nos oreilles, chaque titre est une leçon de violence imparable. Les voix claires et le chant hurlé se mêlent parfaitement et apportent chacune une palette d’émotions fortes aux compositions. La puissance de la musique rejoint bien la noirceur inscrite dès le titre de l’album. N’attendez pas de BEAR des morceaux de hardcore courts, non ici on enchaîne des titres bien plus longs, qui laissent aux musiciens belges l’occasion de nous montrer toute l’étendue de leurs talents respectifs. La batterie et la basse sont dantesques tout au long de cette nouvelle sortie et laissent nos cervicales dans un état lamentable, si on arrive à headbanger sur les rythmes changeants des morceaux. Le morceau titre est une véritable pépite qui vient rejoindre les meilleurs morceaux du groupe. Les thématiques des morceaux sont fortes et vont de la bataille contre le cancer à la santé mentale fragile apportée par la pandémie. L’album de laisse aucun répit et continue de balancer une énergie folle de bout en bout, comme sur l’excellent « Eearthgrinder » qui sera sans aucun doute un varitable moment de pit déchaîné lors des concerts à venir. On vous laissera vous découvrir « Piece » en fin d’article, véritable lettre d’amour au hardcore 90’s et à ses sonorités les plus marquantes. L’album se termine sur la tornade « Andram » qui remet une dernière couche de riffs implacables et de rythmiques énergiques à souhait pour une fin en apothéose.

BEAR ont avec Vanta confirmé qu’ils sont un nom de premier plan de la scène belge. Ce nouvel album confirme que le groupe sait où il va! Impossible de passer à côté de cette nouvelle sortie, qui montre encore une fois la diversité de sonorités proposée par le combo, et cette envie de nous donner un hardcore différent tout en gardant des racines musicales bien marquées. On termine en se disant que Pelagic Records continuent de nous enchanter cette année avec encore une nouvelle sortie à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte.

After four albums widely acclaimed by critics and fans alike, Belgium’s BEAR are back this autumn with their fifth studio effort. Entitled Vanta, it will be available on 29 September via Pelagic Records. Their previous album, Propaganda, turned us on our feet, and we can’t wait to discover what this one has in store for us.

The first two tracks smack us in the face with the Antwerp band’s trademark powerful hardcore from the best of the 90s, sprinkled with influences from other genres, including progressive metal. The latter is very much in evidence in ‘Defeatist’, with the remarkable incursion of a saxophone right in the middle of the track. It’s impossible not to let the band’s songs ring out loud and clear in your ears, each track a lesson in unstoppable violence. The clear vocals and the screamed vocals blend perfectly, each bringing a palette of strong emotions to the compositions. The power of the music is matched by the darkness of the album’s title. Don’t expect short hardcore tracks from BEAR, no, here we have a succession of much longer tracks, which give the Belgian musicians the opportunity to show us the full extent of their respective talents. The drums and bass are Dantesque throughout this new release, and leave our necks in a lamentable state, if we manage to headbang to the changing rhythms of the tracks. The title track is a real nugget that joins the band’s best tracks. The themes of the tracks are strong, ranging from the battle against cancer to the fragile mental health brought on by the pandemic. The album leaves no room for respite, and continues to unleash insane energy from start to finish, as on the excellent ‘Eearthgrinder’, which will undoubtedly be a veritable moment of unleashed pitting at forthcoming concerts. We’ll leave you to discover ‘Piece’ at the end of the article, a veritable love letter to 90s hardcore and its most distinctive sounds. The album closes with the whirlwind ‘Andram’, a final layer of relentless riffs and energetic rhythms that bring it all to a climactic close.

With Vanta, BEAR have confirmed that they are a leading name on the Belgian scene. This new album confirms that the band know where they’re going! It’s impossible to miss out on this new release, which once again shows the diversity of sounds offered by the combo, and their desire to give us a different kind of hardcore while keeping their musical roots firmly in place. In conclusion, Pelagic Records continue to delight us this year with yet another release not to be missed.
