Cerbère Coryphée nous propose en cette première semaine d’automne, une soirée éclectique à la Malterie, comprenant grind, sludge, death, black metal et folk black. Pour représenter ces styles NerveN, Iskandr, Witching et Escuela Grind sont de la partie. Impossible de rater cette date qui fait la part belle aussi bien au local, à la diversité musicale qu’à la mixité.

Étonnamment nous sommes accueillis par Iskandr. Nous nous attendions à voir le groupe local débuter mais il n’en est rien. Soit. Après son concert dans l’église à l’occasion du réputé Rock in Bourlon, j’étais très impatiente de découvrir ce one man band néerlandais dans une configuration plus banale. Autant le dire tout de suite : les deux shows sont très différents, d’autant que l’album Spiritus Sylvestris est sorti entre-temps. Nous sommes invités à entrer dans l’univers folk black metal de Iskandr par un clairon. Des cloches et autres accessoires nous aideront également à nous plonger dans la prestation. La projection d’images de cours d’eau, d’animaux, de végétation… associée à la musique et à la voix envoûtantes de Iskandr nous emmène loin, très loin dans nos pensées. L’ambiance intimiste de la Malterie nous accompagne dans ce voyage des songes… L’équilibre de tous les sons est maîtrisé et rien n’est laissé au hasard. Un dernier coup de clairon sonne la fin de notre excursion à notre grand dam. Mais il est grand temps de découvrir les 3 autres groupes de la soirée !

NerveN entre alors en scène. Le trio d’Arras remplace Dawn Ray’d qui a splitté en cours de route, annulant sa tournée. Nous pensions les voir ouvrir cette soirée mais nous les retrouvons plus tard que prévu. La dégaine trash des musiciens arrivant sur scène nous rappelle le vieil adage : « ne pas se fier aux apparences ». Le groupe, qui a récemment joué au SLB Fest, est présenté comme un groupe allant du black ou metalcore. Pour notre part, il est difficile de les définir dans un style particulier. Nous ne rentrons pas réellement dans la proposition. On peut regretter de ne pas très bien entendre toutes les nuances vocales pourtant présentes sur leur EP. Nous noterons tout de même certains passages se distinguant, ce qui amènera d’ailleurs quelques personnes à entamer un début de pit. Le set se termine assez vite et cela ne permet peut-être pas au groupe d’entraîner pleinement le public, surtout après le show d’Iskandr dont nous nous remettons à peine. Nous ne serions pas contre les revoir sur une autre affiche, peut-être plus locale. 

A peine le temps de prendre l’air que Witching enchaîne déjà. On sent rien qu’à l’attitude des membres du groupe que ça va être du lourd. Et effectivement ça envoie directement! Le groupe de Philadelphie nous balance un son à la fois bourrin mais tout en nuance. La succession de passages sludge et death est totalement maîtrisée et donne une profondeur incroyable à leurs titres. Jacqui Powell au chant est impressionnante! Si on ferme les yeux on peut penser qu’il y a plusieurs personnes au micro. Elle alterne chant clair et scream avec une aisance déconcertante. Dès le premier titre, le groupe nous accroche et nous prend aux tripes. On sent que le public adhère complètement à la proposition. Le son est particulièrement fort, mais on reste tout de même au premier rang pour observer la prestation et le charisme remarqué de Jacqui (chant) et de Tatiana Buonassisi (basse).  Et, cerise sur le gâteau, on sent les membres du groupe heureux·ses de jouer ensemble, et entamer ici leur première tournée européenne. Soirée de quatre groupes oblige, le set est assez court et on n’aurait pas été contre un ou deux titres supplémentaires. Mais après « So young, so useless », dernier titre sorti en date, il est temps de laisser partir Witching que nous aurons le plaisir de retrouver au Tyrant Fest.

Le dernier groupe de la soirée est également là pour sa première date lilloise. Escuela Grind arrive tout doucement en fin de tournée européenne. Ils n’ont rien perdu de leur énergie en route et sont là pour nous le prouver ! Lorsque Katarina Economou prend le micro, on se demande où est caché tout ce coffre vocal ! C’est une très grosse baffe qui nous arrive dessus et va nous secouer durant le tout le set. La salle est chaude à souhait et un mosh pit se forme très rapidement. Katerina arrivera même à lancer un circle pit dans le public survolté. Il a beau être tard, l’énergie du groupe, et principalement de sa leadeuse qui est partout sur scène, est communicative. On se passerait bien des commentaires, malheureusement habituels quand une femme est sur scène, qui lui demande de se dénuder, notamment quand le groupe revendique des valeurs de respect de chacun et de droits pour tous. Comme son nom l’indique, le groupe appartient à la scène Grindcore. On sent tout de même de très grosses influences Hardcore, en témoigne la reprise de Hatebreed pour terminer le set. 

Cerbère Coryphée nous a proposé une soirée vraiment intéressante avec de nombreuses découvertes live. On en a pris plein les oreilles, et le lieu était particulièrement adapté aux groupes proposés. On apprécie beaucoup la présence de nombreuses femmes sur scène ce soir. La diversité musicale nous a conquis, et le public a également répondu présent. Nous avons été envoûtés par Iskandr puis on nous a fait revenir à la réalité avec NerveN avant de nous faire arracher les tripes par Witching et enfin tabasser par Escuela Grind. On a hâte de revoir toutes ces formations très vite !

Cerbère Coryphée is offering an eclectic evening of grind, sludge, death, black metal and folk black at La Malterie in the first week of autumn. Representing these styles are NerveN, Iskandr, Witching and Escuela Grind. It’s a date you won’t want to miss, with its emphasis on local, diverse and mixed music.

Surprisingly, we were greeted by Iskandr. We were expecting the local band to start, but they didn’t. So be it. After their concert in the church at the renowned Rock in Bourlon, I was really looking forward to seeing this Dutch one-man band in a more ordinary setting. I might as well say it straight away: the two shows are very different, especially as the album Spiritus Sylvestris has been released in the meantime. We’re invited into Iskandr‘s folk-black metal world by a bugle. Bells and other accessories will also help us to immerse ourselves in the performance. The projection of images of waterways, animals, vegetation… combined with Iskandr’s haunting music and voice take us far, far away into our thoughts. The intimate atmosphere of La Malterie accompanies us on this dreamlike journey… The balance of all the sounds is mastered and nothing is left to chance. A final bugle call signals the end of our excursion, much to our dismay. But it’s high time to discover the other 3 bands of the evening!

NerveN then entered the scene. The trio from Arras replace Dawn Ray’d, who have split up, cancelling their tour. We thought we’d see them open the evening, but we find them later than expected. The trashy look of the musicians as they took to the stage reminded us of the old adage: « don’t be fooled by appearances ». The band, who recently played at SLB Fest, are billed as ranging from black to metalcore. As far as we’re concerned, it’s hard to pin them down to one particular style. We don’t really fit into that proposition. It’s a shame we don’t hear all the vocal nuances on their EP. But there were a few passages that stood out, and a few people started to pit. The set ended fairly quickly, perhaps not allowing the band to fully engage the audience, especially after Iskandr‘s show, from which we’re barely recovering. We wouldn’t mind seeing them again on another bill, perhaps a more local one.

Barely time for a breath of fresh air before Witching get down to business. You can tell from the attitude of the band members that this is going to be heavy stuff. And that’s exactly what happens! The band from Philadelphia deliver a sound that’s both gruff and nuanced. The succession of sludge and death passages is totally mastered and gives incredible depth to their tracks. Jacqui Powell on vocals is impressive! If you close your eyes, you might think there’s more than one person at the microphone. She alternates between clear vocals and screams with disconcerting ease. From the very first track, the band grab you by the throat. You can feel that the audience is completely on board. The sound is particularly loud, but we’re still in the front row to watch the performance and the charisma of Jacqui (vocals) and Tatiana Buonassisi (bass). And the icing on the cake was the fact that all the band members were happy to be playing together, and that this was their first European tour. As it was a four-band evening, the set was fairly short, and we wouldn’t have minded an extra track or two. But after ‘So young, so useless’, the latest track to be released, it’s time to let Witching go, and we’ll have the pleasure of seeing them again at Tyrant Fest.

The last band of the evening is also here for their first date in Lille. Escuela Grind are slowly coming to the end of their European tour. They’ve lost none of their energy along the way, and they’re here to prove it! When Katarina Economou takes the microphone, you wonder where all that vocal power is hidden! It’s a huge slap in the face that shakes us for the whole set. The room was hot as hell and a mosh pit quickly formed. Katerina even managed to throw a circle pit into the overexcited crowd. It may be late, but the band’s energy, especially that of their frontwoman who is everywhere on stage, is infectious. We could do without the comments, unfortunately customary when a woman is on stage, asking her to strip naked, especially when the group claims values of respect for everyone and rights for all. As their name suggests, the band belong to the grindcore scene. But there are still some very strong hardcore influences, as evidenced by the Hatebreed cover at the end of the set.

Cerbère Coryphée put on a really interesting evening with a host of live discoveries. We got an earful, and the venue was particularly well-suited to the bands on offer. We really appreciated the presence of so many women on stage this evening. We were won over by the musical diversity, and the audience was equally enthusiastic. We were spellbound by Iskandr, then brought back to reality by NerveN, before having our guts ripped out by Witching and finally beaten up by Escuela Grind. We can’t wait to see all these bands again!
