Lorsque La Brat Cave annonce une date prog métal, on ne peut que être intéressés. Et en plus, lorsque celle-ci fait cohabiter un de nos groupes locaux favoris avec deux coups de cœur du genre, alors là on s’y rend en courant! Ce mardi soir c’est donc les israéliens de Obsidian Tide (dont on vous a parlé il y a peu), les belges de Omnerod et The Baptized (il nous semble aussi vous avoir parlé d’eux très récemment) qui sont à l’affiche pour une soirée qui s’annonce grandiose.

Depuis notre première rencontre avec The Baptized en décembre dernier, chez Sounding Shivers, on s’empresse d’aller voir le trio à chaque occasion qui se présente à nous. Comment faire un reportage toujours unique, sans se répéter au bout de la 5ème fois ? Cette fois-ci, je vais laisser la parole à Marye. Alors Marye, c’était comment le concert de The Baptized ?

Un concert de The Baptized, c’est quand même vachement cool ! Ca commence par du bon son très math rock, qui fait bouger les nuques du public très vite, ca s’enchaîne en introduisant de beaux moments de post rock, toujours avec un jeu impeccable à la guitare de la part de Nico. Pour laisser souffler quelques secondes Bob à la batterie, déjà coulant de partout (mais pour la bonne cause), Julien fait causette avec le public, et toujours sans micro. « Le prochain titre s’appelle Comète ». Ca tombe bien, on est déjà dans les nuages à se laisser porter par chaque note du trio. L’évolution du set se fera vers des gros riffs de stoner, assez long, mais surtout très lourd, porté par la basse de Julien. On sent les musiciens à fond, tout comme le public dansant. Mais jamais autant que les mouvements fous que nous fera Julien, jusqu’à envoyer une de ses pédales à l’autre bout de la scène. Même si sur le coup, on imagine que tout s’effondre dans sa tête, ses deux compères continuent de porter le morceau. On ne va pas se mentir, sans la basse, on entends clairement la différence. Qui a osé dire qu’un bassiste, ça servait à rien ? Et même si après plusieurs tentatives de branchement et autres réglages,  l’instrument ne retrouvera pas son son d’origine, on ne leur en tiendra pas compte, on adore beaucoup trop ce qu’ils font. Alors si c’était votre première fois, promis c’est la première fois qu’il y a un petit soucis technique, mais du coup raison de plus pour aller les revoir. Si vous ne les avez jamais vu, comment ça on ne vous a toujours pas convaincu ? C’est quoi cette histoire? Allez je laisse la parole à Victor pour le reste de l’article.

On continue très vite avec les belges d’Omnerod qui viennent nous présenter leur prog métal aérien. Chose étonnante et rare dans la salle, des spots lumineux sont installés en nombre pour nous faire vivre un véritable show, malgré le cadre intimiste offert par la Brat. Chaque musicien est au sommet de son art et la musique résonne en nous dès les premiers instants. Il faut dire que la performance au chant de Romain Jeuniaux est une véritable masterclass. Et en plus d’exceller au chant il excelle à la guitare, ça commence à faire beaucoup pour un seul homme non? Les morceaux longs permettent de prendre la pleine mesures du combo technique que forment André Six à la basse et Pablo Schwilden à la batterie! On se laisse transporter dans l’univers onirique des belges sans effort et on en redemande. Leur prestation regroupe tout ce qu’on aime dans le prog métal, tout en gardant une identité folle. On ne voit pas le temps passer, et lorsque le groupe annonce le dernier titre on se dit qu’on aurait aimé que ça dure beaucoup plus longtemps. Mais il nous reste une petite dizaine de minutes à vivre en leur compagnie et on compte bien en profiter pleinement! Le groupe quitte la scène largement applaudi en ayant fait très forte impression pour leur premier passage lillois.

Omnerod est un groupe à découvrir de toute urgence si ça n’a pas déjà été fait! On a passé un moment délicieux en leur compagnie et on souhaite remettre ça au plus vite! On espère leur retour rapide dans le coin mais on hésitera pas à aller les voir chez eux lors de prochaines dates! 

C’est enfin l’heure de retrouver Obsidian Tide sur la scène de La Brat Cave! Malgré l’actualité tragique dans leur pays les trois musiciens sont bien là pour nous faire découvrir leur discographie pour leur premier passage français, et on ne peut imaginer à quel point l’exercice est dur pour eux. On commence très fort avec le magnifique « Beyond » et ses paroles qui résonnent fort en nous. Le trio est lui aussi au sommet de son art, et nous propose un prog métal d’une beauté incandescente qui nous touchera au cœur en quelques secondes. Après cette belle incursion dans leur dernier album en date, il est temps de revenir en arrière et de se plonger dans « Pillars Of Creation », morceau issu de l’album précédent. Oz Avneya (guitare) et Shachar Bieber (basse) se partagent le chant avec brio. L’un nous envoute avec son chant clair majestueux et l’autre nous submerge avec ses cris puissants. La beauté de chaque composition est un ravissement pour les oreilles, et le silence dans la salle montre bien que le public accroche totalement à la proposition des israéliens. A la batterie Erez Nadler nous montre tout son talent de technicien, tout en gardant cette émotion présente dans chaque coup de baguette. Peu de titres ce soir, mais assez pour prendre en pleine face la beauté des compositions du groupe. Après l’incroyablement puissant « The Invasion On Paradise », on termine en apothéose avec « Halo Crvsher » qui donne une dernière démonstration de ce que la musique peut transmettre comme émotion.

Obsidian Tide ont confirmé leur place de véritable coup de cœur de l’année! Leur prog métal transporte, envoute et nous émeut au plus haut point. On ne peux que vous encourager à foncer les voir dès que possible et à vous jeter sur leurs albums! Une fin de soirée comme on les adore, belle et majestueuse servie par trois musiciens et interprètes de talent.

When La Brat Cave announces a prog metal date, we can’t help but be interested. And what’s more, when it brings together one of our favourite local bands with two of the genre’s favourites, we go running! So this Tuesday night, it’s the Israeli band Obsidian Tide (who we told you about a little while ago), the Belgians Omnerod and The Baptized (we think we told you about them a little while ago) who are on the bill for what promises to be a great evening.

 

 

Since our first meeting with The Baptized last December at Sounding Shivers, we’ve been rushing to see the trio every chance we get. How do you write a report that’s always unique, without repeating itself after the 5th time? This time I’m going to let Marye have her say. So Marye, how was The Baptized‘s concert?

A concert by The Baptized is pretty cool! It starts off with a great math-rock sound that gets the audience’s necks moving very quickly, then moves on to introduce some fine moments of post-rock, always with impeccable guitar playing from Nico. To give Bob a few seconds to breathe on the drums, already flowing all over the place (but for a good cause), Julien chats to the audience, still without a microphone. « The next track is called « Comète » ». And just as well, we’re already in the clouds, letting ourselves be carried away by the trio’s every note. The set evolves towards big stoner riffs, quite long, but above all very heavy, carried by Julien‘s bass. You can feel the musicians firing on all cylinders, just like the audience dancing. But never more so than with Julien’s crazy moves, to the point of sending one of his pedals to the other end of the stage. Even if at the time you imagine that everything is falling apart in his head, his two accomplices continue to carry the song. Let’s face it, without the bass, you can clearly hear the difference. Whoever said a bass player was useless? And even if, after several attempts at plugging in and other adjustments, the instrument doesn’t get back to its original sound, we won’t hold that against them – we love what they do far too much. So if this is your first time, I promise it’s the first time there’s been a technical problem, but all the more reason to go and see them again. If you’ve never seen them, what do you mean we still haven’t convinced you? What’s all this about? I’ll leave the rest of the article to Victor.

 

We continue very quickly with the Belgians from Omnerod who come to present us their aerial prog metal. Surprisingly, and a rarity in the venue, a large number of spotlights are installed to give us a real show, despite the intimate setting offered by the Brat. Each musician was at the top of their game, and the music resonated with us from the very first moment. Romain Jeuniaux‘s vocal performance is a real masterclass. And as well as excelling on vocals, he also excels on guitar – that’s quite a lot for one man, isn’t it? The long tracks give you the full measure of the technical combo formed by André Six on bass and Pablo Schwilden on drums! You’re transported effortlessly into the dreamlike world of the Belgians, and you want more. Their performance brings together everything we love about prog metal, while retaining their own unique identity. You can’t see the time go by, and when the band announce the last track, you think you’d have liked it to have lasted a lot longer. But we’ve still got ten minutes or so to live in their company, and we intend to make the most of it! The band leave the stage to rapturous applause, having made a big impression on their first appearance in Lille.

Omnerod is a band to be discovered urgently if you haven’t already! We had a great time with them and we want to do it again as soon as possible! We’re hoping they’ll be back in the area soon, but we won’t hesitate to go and see them on their next dates!

 

It’s finally time for Obsidian Tide to take to the stage at La Brat Cave! Despite the tragic events in their homeland, the three musicians are here to show us their discography for their first French appearance, and it’s impossible to imagine how hard an exercise this is for them. We get off to a great start with the magnificent ‘Beyond’ and its lyrics that resonate strongly with us. The trio are also at the top of their game, delivering incandescently beautiful prog metal that will touch your heart in seconds. After this fine foray into their latest album, it’s time to take a step back and delve into ‘Pillars Of Creation’, a track from the previous album. Oz Avneya (guitar) and Shachar Bieber (bass) share the vocals brilliantly. One captivates us with his majestic clear vocals, the other overwhelms us with his powerful screams. The beauty of each composition is a delight to the ears, and the silence in the room shows that the audience is totally hooked on the Israeli band’s offering. On the drums, Erez Nadler shows us all his talent as a technician, while keeping the emotion present in every stroke of his drumstick. Not many tracks tonight, but enough to bring the beauty of the band’s compositions home. After the incredibly powerful ‘The Invasion On Paradise’, we end on a high note with ‘Halo Crvsher’, a final demonstration of the emotion that music can convey.

Obsidian Tide have confirmed their place as one of the year’s real favourites! Their prog metal transports, bewitches and moves us to the core. We urge you to go and see them as soon as you can, and get your hands on their albums! A beautiful, majestic end to an evening just the way we like them, served up by three talented musicians and performers.
