Shaka Ponk ont annoncé il y a plusieurs mois leurs adieux après un dernier album et une ultime tournée qui s’étendra jusqu’en 2024! C’est au Zénith de Lille que nous avons rendez-vous pour une de ces dates qui s’annonce riche en émotions. Pour les accompagner on retrouve The Last Internationale! Un groupe US en première partie d’un groupe Français c’est rare mais très plaisant! Evidemment la date affiche sold out depuis des mois!

On commence donc avec la belle surprise The Last Internationale! Le duo américain arrive accompagné de son batteur live pour nous présenter son rock boosté à la pédale d’effet. Delila Paz et Edgey Pires montrent tous deux leurs talents de guitariste et enchantent le public ouvert à la découverte avec des riffs endiablés. Delila chante divinement bien et a une voix qu’on aimerait entendre des heures. Malheureusement, on peut reprocher quelques vocalises superflues entre les morceaux, qui viennent casser un peu le rythme du set, et empêcher de profiter de plus de titres joués. Mais on pinaille, car la prestation est dantesque! Pour nous c’est une claque monumentale, malheureusement il semble qu’une grande partie du public de Shaka préfère papoter plus qu’écouter ce qui se passe. Encore une fois le respect et tout ca! Après un set beaucoup trop court à notre goût, le groupe quitte la scène en ayant conquis nos coeurs. Une réussite qu’on hésitera pas à aller retrouver en tête d’affiche!
Dans la salle, un petit carré trône en fond de fosse, on s’attend à une scène utilisée pour une petite pause plus intimiste pendant le set, il n’en sera rien! Après avoir fait un petit tour dans les gradins pour saluer le public au plus près, tout le groupe descend en enjambant la rambarde et Frah, Sam et CC rejoignent la petite scène pour un début de set en acoustique. La surprise est totale et redécouvrir des classiques comme « I’m Picky » ou « Run Run Run » sous cette forme fait très plaisir. Les autres musiciens sont déjà sur la grande scène et participent à la fête, en particulier Mandris impériale à la contrebasse. Pour terminer en beauté cette première partie de set, le groupe nous offre une montée en puissance sur « House Of The Rising Sun », comme une annonce de ce qui nous attends pour la suite du show.
Retour sur la grande scène en traversant la fosse, puis c’est « Je m’avance », morceau tiré du dernier album en date qui démarre en trombes le set électrique. La scène se dévoile petit à petit avec un écran géant en fond de scène entouré de piles de livres virtuelles. Mais d’autres piles bien réelles sont également posées sur la scène et font de ce décor une véritable bibliothèque! Le groupe se serait il assagit? On verra vite que non tant la fête est folle. Frah et Sam se partagent le chant, avec toujours cette énergie intarissable qu’on leur connaît. Ion (batteire) et Steve (claviers) sont également en grande forme et nous régalent par des performances de haute volée. Retour aux classiques avec « Wanna Get Free » qui laissera à la chorale gospel installée des deux côtés de la scène, et vêtue de robes gigantesques posant le cadre tels des rideaux d’une scène de théâtre. Chaque morceau est illustré par des vidéos toutes plus créatives les unes que les autres, avec évidemment la présence remarquée de Goz, mascotte du groupe. Retour au dernier album avec deux des titres qui nous ont le plus marqué, « J’aime Pas Les Gens » qui se terminera pas Sam qui dira une clope dans la main « J’aime pas les gens mais toi Lille je t’aime bien! ». S’en suit le magnifique « Tout Le Monde Danse » malheureusement trop d’actualité en ce moment. Sur l’écran un marionnettiste géant à l’effigie de notre président apparaît entre des images de tous ces politiques et grands patrons qui détruisent notre planète petit à petit. Chaque politicien connu apparaissant à l’écran est bien évidemment accueilli par des sifflets fournis.
Le groupe nous propose de repartir sur « I’m Picky » en électrique avant de nous proposer un circle pit géant sur le titre du même nom. Et fans de métal que nous sommes, on peut vous dire qu’un circle pit aussi grand, c’est pas souvent (on est presque sûrs que Oli Sykes de Bring Me The Horizon n’aurait pas crié « Bigger »)! Frah est évidemment au milieu sur une petite plateforme en véritable chef d’orchestre de ce moment unique! On poursuit avec la désormais immanquable reprise de « Smells Like Teen Spirit » qu’on reprendra tous en chœur. La fin approche inéluctablement mais il reste « Sex Ball » ou « 13000 Heures » pour jeter ses dernières forces dans la bataille et profiter pleinement de ce show dantesque. Le chœur gospel descendra même sur scène danser et chanter avec le groupe comme une grosse réunion de famille qu’on ne veut pas voir se terminer.
Evidemment tout le monde revient pour deux titres dont l’excellent « Killing Hallelujah » qui clôturera en beauté ce concert d’anthologie! Le groupe reste longuement sur scène pour saluer le public une dernière fois, et donne rendez-vous le lendemain pour remettre ça!
Shaka Ponk ont livré un show comme il est rare d’en voir pour un groupe français! Scénographie, morceaux cultes, et groupe et public en fusion totale, tout était présent pour une soirée absolument inoubliable. On ne regrette pas d’être venu revoir le groupe pour cette tournée d’adieu et on ressort du Zénith avec des étoiles dans les yeux!

Several months ago, Shaka Ponk announced their farewell after a final album and a final tour that will last until 2024! The Zénith in Lille is the venue for one of these dates, which promises to be an emotional one. Joining them are The Last Internationale! A US band supporting a French band is a rare occurrence, but a very pleasant one! Of course, the date has been sold out for months!

So we kick things off with a pleasant surprise in the shape of The Last Internationale! The American duo arrive accompanied by their live drummer to present their effects pedal-powered rock. Delila Paz and Edgey Pires both show off their guitar-playing talents, delighting the open-minded audience with their frenzied riffs. Delila sings divinely well and has a voice you’d like to hear for hours. Unfortunately, there are a few superfluous vocals between songs, which break up the rhythm of the set a little and prevent the audience from enjoying more of the tracks. But that’s a quibble, because the performance was dantesque! For us, it was a monumental slap in the face, but unfortunately it seems that a large part of the Shaka audience prefers to chat more than listen to what’s going on. Once again, respect and all that! After a set that was far too short for our taste, the band left the stage having won our hearts. A success that we won’t hesitate to see again at the head of the bill!.
There’s a small square at the back of the pit – you’d expect it to be used for a more intimate break during the set, but it’s not to be! After a quick tour of the stands to greet the audience as closely as possible, the whole band climbed down over the railings and Frah, Sam and CC joined the small stage for the start of their acoustic set. It was a complete surprise, and rediscovering classics like « I’m Picky » and « Run Run Run » in this form was a real pleasure. The other musicians were already on the big stage and joined in the party, especially Mandris on double bass. To round off this first part of the set in style, the band give us a powerful build-up to « House Of The Rising Sun », a foretaste of what’s in store for the rest of the show.
Back on the main stage, crossing the pit, « Je M’Avance », a track from the latest album, kicks off the electric set with a bang. The stage is gradually revealed, with a giant screen at the back surrounded by piles of virtual books. But real stacks of books are also placed on the stage, turning the set into a veritable library! Has the band mellowed? We’ll soon see that they haven’t, the party is so wild. Frah and Sam share the vocals, with their usual boundless energy. Ion (drums) and Steve (keyboards) are also in top form, and treat us to some top-notch performances. Back to the classics with ‘Wanna Get Free’, which will leave the gospel choir set up on both sides of the stage, dressed in gigantic robes that set the scene like curtains on a theatre stage. Each track is illustrated by videos, each more creative than the last, with the notable presence of Goz, the group’s mascot. Back to the last album, with two of the tracks that made the biggest impression on us, ‘J’aime Pas Les Gens’, which ends with Sam saying, with a cigarette in her hand, « I don’t like people, but I like you Lille! This is followed by the magnificent « Tout Le Monde Danse », which is unfortunately all too topical at the moment. On the screen a giant puppeteer in the likeness of our President appears between images of all those politicians and bosses who are destroying our planet bit by bit. Each well-known politician appearing on the screen is naturally greeted by huge booing.
The band take us back to « I’m Picky » on electric before offering us a giant circle pit on the track of the same name. And metal fans that we are, we can tell you that a circle pit this big isn’t something you see very often (pretty sure Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon would not have said « Bigger »)! Frah is obviously in the middle on a small platform, orchestrating this unique moment! We continue with the now inevitable cover of « Smells Like Teen Spirit », which we all sing along to. The end is inevitably approaching, but there’s still « Sex Ball » and « 13000 Heures » to throw your last energy into the battle and make the most of this Dantesque show. The gospel choir even come down on stage to dance and sing with the band, like a big family reunion you don’t want to end.
Of course, everyone comes back for two tracks, including the excellent « Killing Hallelujah », which brings this anthology concert to a fitting close! The band stay on stage for a long time to greet the audience one last time, and promise to be back on stage the next day!
Shaka Ponk put on a show the likes of which you rarely see from a French band! The stage set, the cult tracks, the band and the audience in total fusion, everything was there for an absolutely unforgettable evening. You won’t regret having come to see the band on this farewell tour, and you’ll leave the Zénith with stars in your eyes!
