Direction Tourcoing et Le Grand Mix en ce lundi soir pour l’autre partie l’équipe pour une soirée qu’on attendait depuis un long moment. Avec leur deuxième album inoubliable, les irlandais de The Murder Capital avaient marqué le début d’année 2023. Les voilà de passage dans la métropole pour une date qu’on ne pouvait manquer. Pour les accompagner sur cette soirée, le groupe a fait appel à la chanteuse Soak. Le groupe avait il y a quelques années retourné la scène club de la salle, c’est aujourd’hui sur la grande scène que la messe post punk sera dite!

On commence donc avec Soak aka Bridie Monds-Watson qui arrive sur la scène devant un public prêt à la découverte. Sa guitare en main elle nous fait découvrir son univers indie folk. Seule en scène, on la sent intimidé par ce public qui ne la connait pas du tout, mais rapidement ses morceaux feront l’unanimité. La douceur de sa voix et son jeu de guitare doux et empli d’émotions viendront toucher notre cœur dès les premiers instants. Le silence est religieux dans la salle, et elle nous en remerciera. On découvre une artiste accomplie qui sait mettre des mots accrocheurs et des notes envoutantes sur ses histoires. Après une prestation d’une petite demi-heure, elle nous laisse avec un dernier titre qui sonnera comme la confirmation à nos yeux que cette jeune chanteuse irlandaise peut aller très loin. On aura passé un moment délicieux, suspendu dans le temps en compagnie de Soak, qui nous a clairement émerveillé ce soir. On s’est senti comme dans une ballade nord irlandaise, vécue en musique.
Il est temps d’accueillir sur scène la tête d’affiche de cette soirée, à savoir The Murder Capital! Autant dire que le public est prêt, et dès les premières notes de « The Stars Will Leave Their Stage » on sent que l’ambiance sera électrique. Aux guitares Damien Tuit et Cathal Roper donnent tout pour nous réveiller avec des riffs imparables. La poésie des morceaux des deux albums du groupe est mise en avant par un James McGovern en état de grâce. Entendre « More Is Less » ou encore « Heart In A Hole » après autant d’attente de notre côté est un plaisir total! Le post punk des irlandais est puissant et sait faire démarrer un pogo dans la fosse en un instant. Au bout d’une quinzaine de minutes on sait déjà que ce concert sera sur notre liste des meilleurs de l’année tant la prestation dépasse toutes nos attentes. A la basse on sent un Gabriel Paschal Blake totalement habité, qui livre des lignes toutes plus vibrantes les unes que les autres. Le set file à une vitesse folle et quand arrive « Ethel », morceau phare de Gigi’s Recovery, le public entre dans une transe inhabituelle pour un lundi soir comme le dira James. Chaque titre est une occasion de plus pour Diarmuid Brennan de nous montrer tout son talent de batteur, à alterner entre douceur et énergie en étant toujours étonnant de maîtrise. Pas de pause, le groupe continue sans discontinuer de nous délivrer les titres déjà majeurs de leur discographie. Mais quand arrive « Green And Blue » on sent que la soirée touche malheureusement bientôt à sa fin. Mais le groupe ne compte pas nous quitter comme ça et nous envoie deux derniers morceaux en pleine face. Sur « Don’t Cling To Life », dernière charge libératrice du groupe, James ira se jeter dans le public pour aller vivre au plus près cette ferveur qui aura habité la salle tout au long de la soirée. La formation quittera la scène largement applaudie et ira retrouver les fans à la table de merch pour un échange plus long.
The Murder Capital ont ce soir tout donné pour nous enchanter et nous émouvoir. Le Grand Mix a véritablement vécu un moment de communion entre les irlandais et leur public. Cette tournée prouve une fois de plus qu’on a devant nous un des nouveaux groupes majeurs de la scène post punk européenne. Vu le nombre de dates sur leur tournée française on les imagine revenir vite chez nous pour une nouvelle session poétique et outrageusement rock.

The rest of the team head for Tourcoing and Le Grand Mix on this Monday evening for an evening we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. With their unforgettable second album, Ireland’s The Murder Capital made their mark at the start of 2023. Now they’re back in town for a date we just couldn’t miss. To accompany them for the evening, the band called on singer Soak. A few years ago, the band turned the venue’s club stage upside down, and now it’s time for the post-punk mass to be said on the main stage!

Soak, aka Bridie Monds-Watson, takes to the stage in front of an eager audience. With guitar in hand, she takes us on a tour of her indie folk universe. Alone on stage, she seemed intimidated by an audience that didn’t know her at all, but her songs quickly won over the crowd. The softness of her voice and her gentle guitar playing, full of emotion, will touch our hearts from the very first moments. There’s a religious silence in the room, and she’ll thank us for it. We’re discovering an accomplished artist who knows how to put catchy words and bewitching notes to her stories. After a performance lasting just over half an hour, she leaves us with a final track that will sound like confirmation to us that this young Irish singer can go very far. We spent a delightful moment, suspended in time in the company of Soak, who clearly amazed us this evening. We felt as if we were in a Northern Irish ballad, experienced through music.
It’s time to welcome this evening’s headliner, The Murder Capital, to the stage! It’s safe to say that the crowd is ready, and from the first notes of ‘The Stars Will Leave Their Stage’ you can feel that the atmosphere is going to be electric. On guitars Damien Tuit and Cathal Roper do their utmost to wake us up with their unstoppable riffs. The poetry of the songs on the band’s two albums is brought to the fore by a James McGovern in a state of grace. Hearing ‘More Is Less’ or ‘Heart In A Hole’ after so much anticipation on our part is a total pleasure! The Irish band’s post-punk is powerful and gets the pit going in an instant. After fifteen minutes or so, we already knew that this concert would be on our list of the best of the year, as the performance exceeded all our expectations. On bass, Gabriel Paschal Blake was totally inhabited, delivering lines that were each more vibrant than the last. The set went by at breakneck speed, and when ‘Ethel’, Gigi’s Recovery’s flagship track, arrived, the audience went into an unusual trance for a Monday night, as James would say. Each track was a further opportunity for Diarmuid Brennan to show off his talent as a drummer, alternating between gentleness and energy, always with astonishing mastery. There’s no pause as the band continue to deliver the major tracks from their discography. But when « Green And Blue » arrived, it was clear that the evening would soon be coming to an end. But the band had no intention of leaving us just like that, and threw two final tracks right in our faces. On « Don’t Cling To Life », the band’s final, liberating charge, James threw himself into the audience to experience at close hand the fervour that had inhabited the venue throughout the evening. The band left the stage to rapturous applause and met up with fans at the merch table for a longer chat.
Tonight, The Murder Capital gave their all to enchant and move us. Le Grand Mix truly experienced a moment of communion between the Irish band and their audience. This tour proves once again that we’re looking at one of the major new bands on the European post-punk scene. Given the number of dates on their French tour, we can just about imagine them coming back to our shores for another poetic, outrageously rock session.
