Après un grave accident de la route en milieu d’année, les américains de Year Of The Knife ont retardé un peu la sortie de leur nouvel album, premier en date avec Madison Watkins au chant. Intitulé No Love Lost, il est disponible dès maintenant via Pure Noise Records. Les recettes de cet album iront d’ailleurs au groupe pour les aider à ce remettre de cette épreuve. On commence très fort avec un riff bien puissant, presque death metal, qui vient introduire la voix dévastatrice de Madison! On avait vu le groupe en live plutôt cette année et autant dire que sa présence se ressent tout autant sur album. Ce premier titre annonce la couleur d’un album qui ne laissera aucune chance à l’auditeur. Le hardcore du groupe est définitivement marqué par un métal bien plus extrême si on s’en réfère aux blast beats qui parsèment les morceaux. Sur le deuxième morceau, Devin De Sanguisugabogg vient mêler sa voix à celle de Madison pour une composition aussi intense que courte. A la batterie, Andrew Kisielewski, ne laisse rien au hasard et martèle ses futs comme si sa vie en dépendait. Quand on vous disait que ça allait très très vite, on ne pensait pas si bien dire. « Last Laugh » en feat avec Dylan de Full Of Hell dure 47 secondes! Mais lorsqu’on connait les deux formations on sait qu’elle seront diaboliquement destructrices. Impossible de ne pas se laisser retourner par les riffs et les lignes de basse de « Alice », qui vient prouver une fois encore que le groupe ne veux pas nous ménager. On poursuit avec toujours cette urgence constante dans les compos, comme si le temps nous manquait et qu’il fallait en faire bon usage. Et c’est totalement réussi, chaque seconde est une démonstration de la qualité du hardcore proposé par la formation américaine. « Heaven Denied » est peu être le titre qui représente le mieux cet album avec ce mélange des genres bien audible et carrément maîtrisé! On vous laissera vous prendre le break en pleine tronche, on a clairement eu du mal à s’en remettre! Après une lame de fond de un peu plus d’une minute, le dernier titre éponyme vient montrer que les américains ne veulent pas nous laisser sans une dernière dose de violence musicale! Pendant quasi quatre minutes on se prend toute la maestria des américains en pleine tête avec en bonus une rythmique des enfers qui clôt cet album de la plus belle des manières.
Avec No Love Lost, Year Of The Knife frappent une nouvelle fois très très fort. On le savait déjà mais Madison Watkins est une grande chanteuse qui a clairement su trouver sa place dans la formation. On ne peut qu’écouter cet album en boucle, tant chaque titre est une pure merveille de composition. Hardcore et death metal n’ont jamais été aussi proches que sur cet album, et on vous encourage à aller le découvrir au plus vite si vous êtes amateurs de compos dévastatrices.

After a serious road accident in the middle of the year, American band Year Of The Knife have delayed the release of their new album, the first to date to feature Madison Watkins on vocals. Entitled No Love Lost, it’s available now via Pure Noise Records. Proceeds from the album will go to the band to help them recover from their ordeal. Get ready for 20 minutes of pure hardcore!
We get off to a great start with a powerful, almost death metal riff that introduces Madison‘s devastating vocals! We’d seen the band live earlier this year, and it’s fair to say that her presence is just as strong on this album. This first track sets the tone for an album that won’t give the listener a chance. The band’s hardcore is definitely marked by a much more extreme metal style, if the blast beats scattered throughout the tracks are anything to go by. On the second track, Devin De Sanguisugabogg mixes his voice with Madison‘s for a composition that’s as intense as it is short. On drums, Andrew Kisielewski leaves nothing to chance, pounding his drums as if his life depended on it. When we said it was going very, very fast, we didn’t mean it that way. « Last Laugh », a feat with Dylan from Full Of Hell, lasts 47 seconds! But if you know the two bands, you know they’ll be diabolically destructive. It’s impossible not to be swept away by the riffs and bass lines of « Alice », which prove once again that the band don’t want to spare us. We continue with this constant urgency in the compositions, as if we were running out of time and had to make good use of it. Every second is a demonstration of the quality of the American band’s hardcore. « Heaven Denied » is perhaps the track that best represents this album, with its clearly audible and totally mastered blend of genres! We’ll let you take the break in the face, we clearly had a hard time getting over it! After a break lasting just over a minute, the final eponymous track shows that the Americans don’t want to leave us without one last dose of musical violence! For almost four minutes, we’re treated to the full force of the Americans’ mastery, with the added bonus of a hellish rhythm section that brings the album to a fitting close.
With No Love Lost, Year Of The Knife strike again very, very hard. As we already knew, Madison Watkins is a great singer who has clearly found her place in the band. You can’t help but listen to this album over and over again, as each track is a pure marvel of composition. Hardcore and death metal have never been so close as on this album, and we encourage you to check it out as soon as possible if you’re a fan of devastating compositions.
