Après deux EP rock en 2017 et 2020, l’entité BLVL se réinvente totalement et propose un premier album orienté cold wave et rock électro. Intitulé MARTHA, il est disponible dès maintenant via P3P6. Projet mystérieux avec des musiciens masqués, on y retrouve des artistes chevronnés de la scène française comme des musiciens de Dysfunctional By Choice, Mass Hysteria, Comity, Doyle Airence ou encore Deliverance. Autant dire qu’on a hâte de se plonger dans ce projet singulier qui a su nous convaincre avec ses singles envoutants.

Le début du morceau d’ouverture, « Luperci City », annonce la couleur d’un son rock mais largement infusé d’éléments électroniques qui l’éloignent d’un album classique. La voix est envoutante et nous laisse plonger dans cette musique étonnante servie par des musiciens de grand talent. On change de style et on part vers un post punk revisité sur les morceaux suivants. Encore une fois les accroches sonores sont nombreuses et nous emportent vers des horizons familiers.
Le nom du groupe et de l’album évoquent le quartier parisien de Belleville, rare lieu parisien où selon la formation, une âme forte existe encore. Et cette âme est parfaitement retranscrite dans les morceaux entendus tout au long de l’écoute, tant la variété des sonorités est confondante et montre l’envie d’attraper l’auditeur à chaque instant. Le son électro rock rappelle des groupes phares des années 80 tout en gardant une identité unique qui ne ressemble à rien d’autre dans la scène actuelle. Dans « A Night With The Devilfish » le groupe convoque Depeche Mode avec cette voix hypnotisante qui nous fait le même effet que celle de Dave Gahan. On sent que plusieurs membres du groupe apportent leur voix aux parties chantées et c’est une véritable réussite.
L’utilisation de vocodeurs sur « Dogs vs Foxes » par exemple est également parfaitement maîtrisée et apporte une fois encore une sonorité différente à la musique de BLVL. On sait que les musiciens composant le groupe sont présents sur la scène depuis de nombreuses années, mais ce projet est une nouveauté étonnante quand on voit les curriculum de chacun. En tout cas arrivé en milieu d’album on se dit qu’on a devant nous une des pièces les plus intrigantes de l’année dans les oreilles, et on reste plongé dedans ravis d’avoir encore quelques morceaux à se mettre sous la dent.
Encore une fois les années 80 reviennent en force sur « Black Widow’s Addiction », morceau qui donne envie de danser au rythme des synthés entrainants tout en imaginant qui est cette veuve noire et quelle est son addiction. Là, réside l’autre force de l’album! La galerie de lieux et de personnages évoquée dans les morceaux trouve toujours sa résonnance en nous, de part une caractérisation forte qui nous plonge dans ces histoires sans effort.
Sur « Chase The Dragon », Vincent Mercier (Ruin Of Romantics) vient apporter son expérience dans un morceau qui donne encore une fois une belle preuve de ce que la scène française peut cacher comme pépite musicale. On sent que le travail est fluide entre le groupe et leur invité et cela donne une des pièces les plus fortes de cet album. Le dernier morceau « Sunday Sparrow » est un beau résumé de tout ce que l’on a entendu auparavant, avec encore une belle touche de nouveauté qui fait de ce titre le closer parfait d’un album important.
Avec MARTHA, BLVL nous offrent un premier album parfaitement construit qui apporte des surprises auditives à chaque minute. Les sonorités 80’s rappellent des morceaux chers à notre cœur sans les imiter, ce qui fait des compos des nouveaux classiques de nos envies de replonger dans une musique réconfortante qui nous émeut. Encré dans son territoire bellevillois le groupe nous conte des histoires musicales qu’on aime suivre tout en prenant en pleine face l’avalanche de talent qui enveloppe la place Sainte Marthe. On le redit, cet album est un des plus impressionnant qu’on a eu dans les oreilles cette année!

A mysterious project with masked musicians, it features veteran artists from the French scene, including musicians from Dysfunctional By Choice, Mass Hysteria, Comity, Doyle Airence and Deliverance. We can’t wait to immerse ourselves in this singular project, which has won us over with its bewitching singles.
The opening track, « Luperci City », sets the tone for a rock sound infused with electronic elements that take it far from a classic album. The vocals are captivating, and let us immerse ourselves in this astonishing music served up by highly talented musicians. On the following tracks, we move on to a revisited post-punk style. Once again, the sound hooks are numerous and take us to familiar horizons.
The name of the band and the album evoke the Parisian neighbourhood of Belleville, a rare place in Paris where, according to the band, a strong soul still exists. And this soul is perfectly reflected in the tracks heard throughout, with a bewildering variety of sounds and a desire to grab the listener at every turn. The electro-rock sound is reminiscent of flagship bands from the 80s, while retaining a unique identity that is unlike anything else on the current scene. In ‘A Night With The Devilfish’, the band summons up Depeche Mode with that hypnotic voice that has the same effect as Dave Gahan‘s. You can feel that several members of the band have contributed to the sound. You can feel that several members of the band are contributing their voices to the singing parts, and it’s a real success.
The use of vocoders on « Dogs vs Foxes », for example, is also perfectly mastered and once again brings a different sound to BLVL‘s music. We know that the musicians in the band have been on the scene for many years, but this project is a surprising novelty when you consider the curriculum of each of them. In any case, as we reach the middle of the album, we realise that we have one of the most intriguing pieces of the year in front of us, and we remain immersed in it, delighted to have a few more tracks to sink our teeth into.
Once again, the 80s come back in force on ‘Black Widow’s Addiction’, a track that makes you want to dance to the rhythm of the catchy synths while imagining who this Black Widow is and what her addiction is. And therein lies the album’s other strength! The gallery of places and characters evoked in the tracks always resonates with us, thanks to the strong characterisation that effortlessly immerses us in these stories.
On « Chase The Dragon », Vincent Mercier (Ruin Of Romantics) brings his experience to bear on a track that once again proves that the French scene can hide a musical nugget. It’s clear that the work between the band and their guest is seamless, and the result is one of the strongest tracks on the album. The final track ‘Sunday Sparrow’ is a fine summary of everything we’ve heard before, with yet another touch of novelty that makes this track the perfect closer to an important album.
With MARTHA, BLVL offer us a perfectly constructed debut album that delivers aural surprises every minute. The 80’s sounds are reminiscent of songs we hold dear without imitating them, making the songs new classics that make us want to dive back into the comforting music that moves us. Firmly rooted in their Bellevillois roots, the band tell musical stories that we love to follow, while taking in the avalanche of talent that envelops the Place Sainte Marthe. Once again, this is one of the most impressive albums we’ve heard this year!
