Après un premier EP en 2021 leur ayant permis de tourner avec Perturbator ou encore Frustration, Sang Froid nous proposent en cet automne de découvrir leur premier album. Intitulé All-Nighter il sera disponible dès le 3 novembre via Frozen Records. Le groupe composé de membres de Regarde Les Hommes Tomber et The Veil vient nous chercher avec une musique très différente de ces deux projets, que nous réserve cette première longue plongée dans leur univers?

Les claviers énergiques de Ben Notox et J.J.S nous lancent dans l’écoute avant que le second musicien ne troque ses claviers pour une guitare très atmosphérique. Enfin T.C vient ajouter sa voix puissante qu’on aime beaucoup retrouver dans ce registre clair qui n’est pas du tout présent dans son autre projet. Ce premier titre est une belle porte d’entrée pour un album qui s’annonce intense et diablement dansant. Le single « Eternal Light » vient plonger du côté de Depeche Mode avec des rythmiques purement cold wave. Mais le chant laisse la comparaison de côté pour une tinte plus proche d’un goth rock maîtrisé.
En tout cas cet album respire les années 80 et on ne vas pas s’en plaindre. La nuit, elle aussi, est au cœur de cet album et chaque titre pourrait être la bande son d’une soirée d’errance dans les rues éclairées par la lune ou les lampadaires. On sent que le trio veux nous lancer dans un voyage avec cette sortie, et c’est très réussi! L’artwork de Newsålem retransmet parfaitement les émotions conférées par un titre comme « Night & Doom », cette froideur nocturne réconfortante dans laquelle on aime se plonger et qui nous fait marcher plus vite dans l’obscurité pour retrouver la chaleur de notre maison.
Le mélange goth rock et cold wave est bien présent tout au long de l’album et nous laisse y trouver un entre deux parfait qui trouve une forme finale dans un titre comme « The Eleventh Dawn » où l’intru et les voix apportent chacune une couleur différente au morceau tout en faisant un tout parfaitement cohérent qui réveille en nous de nouvelles envies de danser de manière saccadée au rythme des claviers. Le morceau instrumental « Nightline » annonce la fin proche du voyage, qui se clôt sur l’excellent « Inquisitive Nature ». Ce dernier titre est une véritable dernière plongée tête les pensées sombres et introspectives que la nuit peut éveiller en nous. Côté sonorités on retrouve même un petit clin d’œil à ce que Hangman’s Chair pourraient proposer avec un cold doom qui garde quand même cette tinte wave propre à nos trois hôtes.
Ce All-Nighter est une très belle porte d’entrée pour qui découvrirait le trio Sang Froid. Les musiciens proposent un ensemble musical varié mais très cohérent qui offre une bande son à nos balades nocturnes. On ressort de l’écoute conquis avec l’envie forte de se remettre cet album en boucle lors de nos escapades ainsi que celle de découvrir ce que le trio peut nous offrir en live! Une nouvelle belle sortie française qui nous laisse avec ce sentiment constant d’être surpris par notre scène de la plus belle des manières.

Following their debut EP in 2021, which saw them tour with the likes of Perturbator and Frustration, Sang Froid are releasing their debut album this autumn. Entitled All-Nighter, it will be available from 3 November via Frozen Records. The band, made up of members of Regarde Les Hommes Tomber and The Veil, are coming at us with music that’s very different from those two projects. What does this first long dive into their universe have in store for us?

The energetic keyboards of Ben Notox and J.J.S get us started before the second musician swaps his keyboards for a very atmospheric guitar. Finally, T.C adds his powerful voice, which we love to find in this clear register that is not at all present in his other project. This first track is a fine gateway to an album that promises to be intense and devilishly danceable. The single ‘Eternal Light’ dips into Depeche Mode territory with its pure cold wave rhythms. But the vocals leave the comparison aside for a tinge closer to mastered goth rock.
In any case, this album exudes the 80s, and we’re not going to complain. Night, too, is at the heart of this album, and each track could be the soundtrack to an evening wandering the moonlit streets or street lamps. It’s clear that the trio want to take us on a journey with this release, and they’ve succeeded! Newsålem‘s artwork perfectly conveys the emotions conferred by a track like ‘Night & Doom’, that comforting nocturnal coldness into which we love to plunge and which makes us walk faster in the dark to find the warmth of our home.
The mix of goth rock and cold wave is present throughout the album, giving it a perfect in-between feel, culminating in a track like « The Eleventh Dawn », where the intru and vocals each bring a different colour to the track, making a perfectly coherent whole that awakens in us a new desire to dance jerkily to the rhythm of the keyboards. The instrumental ‘Nightline’ heralds the approaching end of the journey, which closes with the excellent ‘Inquisitive Nature’. This last track is a final plunge into the dark, introspective thoughts that night can awaken in us. In terms of sound, there’s even a hint of what Hangman’s Chair could offer, with a cold doom that still retains the wave tinge characteristic of our three hosts.
This All-Nighter is a great introduction for anyone new to the Sang Froid trio. The musicians offer a varied but highly coherent musical package that provides a soundtrack to our nocturnal wanderings. It’s an album you’ll want to play over and over again on your travels, as well as discovering what the trio have to offer live! Another fine French release that leaves us with the constant feeling of being surprised by our scene in the most beautiful of ways.
