Avec un nombre incalculable de dérivés du hard rock de nos jours, il y a des groupes qui prennent une voie plutôt moderne dans leur son, et d’autres qui allient à la perfection un son vintage et rugueux à ces sonorités plus modernes que j’évoque ! Vous comprendrez facilement que Dirty Honey fait partie de cette deuxième catégorie, le groupe alliant avec brio leurs différentes influences depuis leur création en 2017. C’est par deux occasions que nous avons pu découvrir les compositions du groupe, d’abord en 2019 avec l’EP éponyme Dirty Honey, puis en 2021 cette fois avec un album, lui aussi éponyme. Le nouvel album Can’t Find the Brakes sera disponible le 3 novembre prochain via Dirt Records.

L’album s’ouvre en douceur avec le titre “Don’t Put Out the Fire”, sur les quelques accords de John Notto (guitariste) accompagné de la voix ultra bluesy et très zeppelinienne de Marc LaBelle (chant). On est vite rattrapé par un rythme très groovy et avec un basse – batterie ultra présent, des choeurs venant souligner une voix très mélodieuse. Ce n’est pas le single “Won’t Take Me Alive” qui viendra faire mentir ce qui est affirmé avant, tellement le groove est omniprésent, le tout donnant un résultat ultra dynamique et entraînant qui fera penser à Led Zeppelin ou, plus récemment, à Greta Van Fleet. Tous les ingrédients sont présents pour un morceau aux influences très funk : basse ultra groovy, gros riff, envolées mélodiques et de la cowbell qui vient s’ajouter sur la fin du morceau (more cowbell, on ne vous le dira jamais assez !).
Après un “Dirty Mind” qui développera la recette posée par les deux premiers morceaux, on retrouve “Roam”, qui viendra poser un tempo plus lent. On peut découvrir la capacité du groupe à proposer des guitares moins rugueuses, jouées en arpèges, et une voix qui semble habitée et montant avec une aisance fascinante dans les aigus, non sans rappeler un certain Robert Plant. “Get a Little High” est quant à lui un morceau beaucoup plus direct et hard rock, mais toujours avec les éléments qui font que ça fonctionne depuis le début de l’album. Le basse – batterie est au coeur de la composition, et la guitare jongle à la perfection entre riff endiablés et solos mélodiques. Le prochain morceau, “Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire)” sera l’occasion d’avoir un aperçu de toutes les qualités vocales de Marc LaBelle, pour les rares personnes qui ne s’en seraient pas encore rendues compte sur les précédents morceaux. La guitare acoustique et les choeurs du reste du groupe mettent en valeur à la perfection cette voix.
Le côté bluesy du groupe ne sera pas oublié avec les morceaux “Satisfied” et “Ride On”, qui proposeront tout les deux des grilles d’accords et des sonorités directement inspirées du blues, tout en intégrant cela à un groove toujours exemplaire ! L’album se clôture sur 2 morceaux plutôt longs (5:46 pour le premier, 6:50 pour le 2ème, jusqu’ici aucun titre en dehors du morceau d’introduction n’aura excédé les 4:30), qui seront deux véritables démonstrations de la capacité du groupe à emporter, et à proposer des compositions avec un savant mélange de groove, de passages plus mid-tempo, le tout mettant habilement en valeur une voix dont on ne sera faire que l’éloge.
Il y a fort à parier que le groupe sera comparé à Greta Van Fleet et Led Zeppelin, deux formations qui au cours de l’histoire du rock auront proposé deux voix parmi les plus magnifiques et incroyables de maîtrise au monde. Cependant, le tour de force est très bien mené par Dirty Honey qui se détache du lot en proposant avec originalité un mélange de nombreuses influences, allant du funk au hard rock en passant par le blues, avec chacun des instruments ayant parfaitement sa place dans chacune des compositions. Après quelques dates en France en 2022-2023, on ne peut qu’espérer une tournée plus complète du groupe dans l’année à venir, pour avoir l’occasion de découvrir plus amplement les titres du groupe !

With countless derivatives of hard rock these days, there are bands who take a rather modern route in their sound, and others who perfectly combine a vintage, rough sound with those more modern tones I’m talking about! You’ll easily understand that Dirty Honey fall into this second category, with the band brilliantly combining their different influences since their inception in 2017. The band’s compositions were released on two occasions, first in 2019 with the eponymous EP Dirty Honey, then in 2021 with an album, also eponymous. The new album, Can’t Find the Brakes, will be released on the 3rd of November on Dirt Records.
The album opens gently with « Don’t Put Out the Fire », a few chords from guitarist John Notto accompanied by the ultra bluesy, very Zeppelin-esque vocals of Marc LaBelle (vocals). The groovy rhythm quickly catches up with the ultra-present bass and drums, with backing vocals underlining the melodious vocals. The single ‘Won’t Take Me Alive’ does nothing to disprove this, with its omnipresent groove and ultra-dynamic, catchy sound reminiscent of Led Zeppelin or, more recently, Greta Van Fleet. All the ingredients are there for a funk-influenced track: ultra groovy bass, big riffs, melodic flights of fancy and the cowbell added at the end (more cowbell, we can’t stress that enough!).
After ‘Dirty Mind’, which builds on the first two tracks, comes ‘Roam’, which sets a slower tempo. It shows the band’s ability to use less rough guitars, played in arpeggios, and a voice that seems inhabited and rises with fascinating ease in the high notes, reminiscent of a certain Robert Plant. « Get a Little High » is a much more straightforward, hard-rocking track, but still with the elements that have made it work from the start of the album. The bass and drums are at the heart of the composition, and the guitar juggles frenzied riffs and melodic solos to perfection. The next track, ‘Coming Home (Ballad of the Shire)’, is an opportunity to get a glimpse of Marc LaBelle‘s vocal skills, for the few who haven’t already noticed them on the previous tracks. The acoustic guitar and backing vocals from the rest of the band showcase this voice to perfection.
The bluesy side of the band is not forgotten with the tracks « Satisfied » and « Ride On », both of which feature chord grids and sounds directly inspired by the blues, while integrating this with an always exemplary groove! The album closes with 2 rather long tracks (5:46 for the first, 6:50 for the 2nd – no track so far, apart from the introduction, has been longer than 4:30), both of which demonstrate the band’s ability to take things away, and to offer compositions with a clever mix of groove and more mid-tempo passages, all skilfully showcasing a voice that can only be praised.
It’s a safe bet that the band will be compared to Greta Van Fleet and Led Zeppelin, two of the most magnificent and incredibly masterful vocalists in rock history. However, Dirty Honey‘s tour de force is a very fine one, as they stand out from the crowd with their original blend of influences, from funk to hard rock and blues, with each instrument playing its own part in each composition. After a handful of dates in France in 2022-2023, we can only hope for a more extensive tour of the band in the coming year, so that we can discover more of their songs!
