Si on associe souvent à tort le glam rock à certains artistes américains comme Poison ou Mötley Crüe, ça serait oublier les nombreux artistes anglais ayant posé les bases du genre, comme Slade, Queen ou encore plus récemment The Darkness. Pour porter haut et fort l’étendard d’un hard / glam rock très british, on retrouve depuis 2012 The Struts, et force est de constater qu’ils auront su convaincre depuis, en atteste de nombreux concerts en Europe, une première partie des Rolling Stones au Stade de France en 2014, et déjà trois albums au compteur. Le quatrième, Pretty Vicious, sort ce 3 novembre 2023 via Big Machine / Universal.

Dès le premier morceau, “Too Good At Raising Hell”, on a un bel aperçu de ce que semble nous réserver le groupe : des guitares aux sonorités vintage, accompagnées d’un groove imparable, d’orgues hammond, de différents cuivres, et surtout de la voix de Luke Spiller qui oscille entre la nonchalance d’un Mick Jagger et des aigus qui rappellent Steven Tyler par moment. Les paroles très sex, drugs and rock’n’roll rappellent elles aussi très facilement les différents groupes piliers du genre : une recette pas forcément originale, mais terriblement efficace. Le morceau éponyme de l’album, “Pretty Vicious”, est l’occasion de découvrir le groupe dans un registre plus pop, avec une composition plus moderne que l’intro de l’album. On y découvre une guitare très mélodique et chantante, et une voix dans la retenue sur le couplet avant de monter dans de magnifiques aigus sur le refrain. Une légère nappe de piano vient accompagner tout cela, soulignant à merveille la partie mélodique du morceau. Le titre “I Won’t Run” conserve la même recette, en y ajoutant une touche encore plus moderne et pop pouvant rappeler Coldplay par moment, surtout au niveau des synthés.
“Hands On Me” se révèle être une ballade terriblement prenante, avec une introduction piano / voix à laquelle viendra progressivement s’ajouter une guitare, le tout donnant un fort sentiment de légèreté, avant une montée en puissance où on retrouve, des violons et une voix puissante, dans un registre plus médium que ce qu’on a pu avoir jusqu’à maintenant. Mon coup de cœur de l’album sans hésiter. Retour au hard rock avec “Do What You Want”, “Rockstar” et “Remember The Name”, morceaux qui vous donneront inévitablement envie de danser, et que l’on imagine assez facilement chantés en chœur par le public en concert ! La bonne humeur et le fun sont de rigueur à l’écoute de ces trois morceaux !
“Bad Decisions” est un morceau plus sérieux, traitant de la solitude qui est la conséquence d’un enchaînement de mauvaises décisions. Laissant une nouvelle fois la part belle à la splendide voix de Luke Spiller, accompagnée d’une guitare acoustique et d’un basse – batterie qui se fera discret. On revient à un ton plus joyeux sur “Better Love”, morceau très funky – disco comme les Rolling Stones ont pu le faire avec “Miss You”. Le morceau est l’occasion de retrouver le groove imparable du groupe, les refrains accrocheurs et je retiendrais personnellement le passage de basse accompagnée de bongos, de synthés et de trompettes venant après le solo que je trouve vraiment entraînant ! “Somebody Someday” clôt l’album avec un morceau piano – voix qui rappelle à bien des égards Freddie Mercury.
The Struts, avec ce nouvel album, vient explorer à la perfection une diversité assez larges de sonorités, allant du hard / classic rock à la pop, et propose des morceaux avec une vraie personnalité. Entre morceaux légers et d’autres traitants de sujets plus sérieux, il y a fort à parier que cet album saura satisfaire aussi bien les fans du groupe que les curieux ! Je ne saurais que vous conseiller de les découvrir en live dès que possible !

Glam rock is often wrongly associated with American artists such as Poison and Mötley Crüe, but that would be forgetting the many British artists who laid the foundations of the genre, such as Slade, Queen and, more recently, The Darkness. The Struts have been flying the flag for British hard/glam rock since 2012, and it’s fair to say that they’ve been a force to be reckoned with ever since, with a string of concerts in Europe, a support slot for the Rolling Stones at the Stade de France in 2014, and already three albums to their name. The fourth, Pretty Vicious, will be released on 3 November 2023 on Big Machine / Universal.
From the very first track, ‘Too Good At Raising Hell’, we get a good taste of what the band have in store for us: vintage-sounding guitars, accompanied by an unstoppable groove, Hammond organs, various brass instruments, and above all Luke Spiller‘s voice, which oscillates between the nonchalance of Mick Jagger and high notes reminiscent of Steven Tyler at times. The sex, drugs and rock’n’roll lyrics are also easily reminiscent of the various mainstays of the genre: not necessarily an original recipe, but terribly effective. The album’s eponymous track, ‘Pretty Vicious’, is an opportunity to discover the band in a more pop register, with a more modern composition than the album’s intro. The guitar is very melodic and lilting, and the vocals are restrained on the verse before rising to magnificent heights on the chorus. A light piano accompanies all this, perfectly underlining the melodic part of the track. The title track, ‘I Won’t Run’, follows the same recipe, adding a more modern, pop feel that might remind you of Coldplay at times, especially on the synths.
« Hands On Me » turns out to be a terribly gripping ballad, with a piano/voice introduction to which a guitar is gradually added, the whole giving a strong feeling of lightness, before a rise in power where we find violins and a powerful voice, in a more mid-range register than we’ve had so far. Definitely my favourite track of the album. Back to hard rock with ‘Do What You Want’, ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Remember The Name’, songs that will inevitably make you want to dance, and that you can easily imagine the audience singing along to in concert! Good humour and fun are the order of the day when you listen to these three tracks!
« Bad Decisions » is a more serious track, about the loneliness that comes from making a series of bad decisions. Once again, Luke Spiller’s splendid vocals take centre stage, accompanied by an acoustic guitar and discreet bass and drums. We return to a happier tone on ‘Better Love’, a very funky disco track, like The Rolling Stones did with ‘Miss You’. The track is an opportunity to rediscover the band’s unstoppable groove and catchy choruses, and I’d personally pick out the bass passage accompanied by bongos, synths and trumpets after the solo, which I found really catchy! « Somebody Someday » closes the album with a piano-vocals track reminiscent in many ways of Freddie Mercury.
With this new album, The Struts perfectly explore a wide range of sounds, from hard/classic rock to pop, and offer tracks with a real personality. With a mix of light-hearted tracks and others dealing with more serious subjects, it’s a safe bet that this album will satisfy both fans of the band and the curious! I’d advise you to check them out live as soon as possible!
