Une belle soirée de rock nous attends ce soir! Quasiment un an jour pour jour après leur passage dans la même salle en ouverture de Royal Republic, Ko Ko Mo sont de retour au Splendid de Lille mais cette fois-ci en tête d’affiche! Et vu le nombre de personnes dans la salle on approche du complet! Le duo français est accompagné pour ce concert des vendéens de Dynamite Shakers. Le public est fin prêt et à 20h pétantes le premier groupe débarque sur scène!

De jeunes, très jeunes (tout juste 20 ans) musicien.ne.s arrivent sur scène et nous présentent un rock puissant et énergique d’entrée de jeu. Beaucoup les découvrent ce soir et en quelques secondes nous seront beaucoup à être convaincus par la performance des Dynamite Shakers. Il faut dire que le quatuor met tout en œuvre pour nous faire bouger. On navigue entre le garage rock et le punk 70’s tout au long du set, mais toujours avec cette qualité musicale et scénique qui nous bluffe tous. Chaque titre joué ce soir est une petite décharge d’adrénaline qui nous met le sourire au lèvres. On saluera la performance du batteur, véritable musicien accompli, tout comme ses trois ami.e.s. La demi-heure qui leur est allouée passe beaucoup trop vite tant leur set est excellent. Dans le public beaucoup se regardent en se disant qu’on a rarement vu un groupe quasi inconnu du public local aussi bon depuis un long moment. Mais quel plaisir! Leur dernier titre, « The Bell Behind The Door, véritable dernière secousse musicale vient terminer de nous convaincre, avec la voix puissante de Elouan Davy qui nous livre une fois encore toute son énergie.
Dynamite Shakers ont littéralement dynamité notre début de soirée avec leur prestation. On ne peut que vous conseiller de foncer les voir en concert dès que possible! On vous promet un beau moment et une énergie à faire trembler les murs de n’importe quelle salle. De notre côté, non seulement on retournera les voir mais on va aller se pencher sur leur album sorti un peu plus tôt cette année. Une pure découverte qu’on est pas près d’oublier!
On enchaine assez rapidement après une petite pause hydratation avec Ko Ko Mo! On attendait leur retour avec impatience et on ne va pas être déçus. D’entrée Warren Mutton (guitare et chant) et Kevin « K20 » Grosmolard à la batterie nous livrent un show dantesque. L’un envoûte tout le monde avec sa voix chaude digne des plus grands chanteurs des années 60-70 et son jeu de guitare stratosphérique pendant que l’autre tourne autour de sa batterie avant de s’installer et de frapper comme si sa vie en dépendait. Evidemment Need Some Mo’ est mis en avant mais leurs anciennes sorties ne sont pas oubliées. Chaque titre est l’occasion pour Warren et K20 de se lancer dans des jams qui amènent chaque morceau à des durées bien plus longues que sur album. Il faut dire que les deux musiciens nantais ont un public tout acquis à leur cause qui profite de chaque petit instant du sublime rock psyché qui nous est proposé ce soir. On sent le duo ravi de remplir la salle qu’ils ont foulé en tant que première partie l’an dernier, et ils nous remercieront d’ailleurs de notre accueil. Un grand moment de la soirée sera évidemment leur reprise de « Personal Jesus » de Depeche Mode dans une version psych rock assez impressionnante. Impossible de ne pas penser à Robert Plant quand on entend la voix de Warren, qui sans singer son illustre comparse arrive à nous faire ressentir les mêmes émotions. Après un set mené tambours battants, c’est le cas de le dire, le groupe nous quitte après un dernier titre envoutant, une fois encore!
Ils reviennent vite sur scène pour deux morceaux qui donnent au public une dernière occasion d’exprimer leur admiration sans limite pour le duo nantais! Une dernière fois? Pas sûr! Les deux musiciens reviennent mais dans la fosse cette fois-ci et en acoustique, pour nous proposer un moment intimiste. Pas de téléphones à leur demande (on ne remercie pas ceux qui ne peuvent s’empêcher de le sortir quand même), et une ampoule géante qui descend du plafond comme seul éclairage. C’est sur une version magnifique de « The Show Must Go On » avec le public assis auprès d’eux que le groupe nous dit définitivement aurevoir après une soirée définitivement unique et mémorable!
Ko Ko Mo ont livré une prestation dont le public lillois va se souvenir longtemps. Un duo arrivant à lever les foules à ce point là, c’est rare et impressionnant. On imagine très bien les retrouver rapidement dans une salle beaucoup plus grande de la métropole! On a voyagé grâce à leur rock pendant une bonne heure et demi et c’est tout ce qu’on attendait! Le duo a de belles heures devant lui et compte parmi nos véritables coups de cœur de ces dernières années.

A great night of rock awaits us tonight! Almost a year to the day after opening for Royal Republic at the same venue, Ko Ko Mo are back at Lille’s Splendid, but this time as headliners! And given the number of people in the room, it’s almost sold out! The French duo are joined on stage by Dynamite Shakers from Vendée. The audience is all set, and at 8pm the first band take to the stage!

A group of young, very young (just 20) musicians take to the stage and deliver some powerful, energetic rock right from the start. Many of us are new to them this evening, and in the space of a few seconds many of us will be convinced by the performance of Dynamite Shakers. The quartet pull out all the stops to get us moving. Their set veers between garage rock and 70s punk, but always with a musical and stage quality that blows us all away. Each track played tonight is a little adrenalin shot that puts a smile on your face. The drummer is a truly accomplished musician, as are his three friends. The half-hour allotted to them went by far too quickly, such was the excellence of their set. Many in the audience looked at each other, thinking that they’d rarely seen a band so good for a long time that was virtually unknown to the local public. But what a pleasure! Their last track, « The Bell Behind The Door », a real last musical jolt, finished off the set, with the powerful voice of Elouan Davy once again giving us all his energy.
Dynamite Shakers literally rocked the start of the evening with their performance. We urge you to go and see them live as soon as possible! We promise you a great time and an energy that will shake the walls of any venue. As for us, not only will we be going back to see them, but we’ll also be checking out their album, released earlier this year. A pure discovery we won’t soon forget!
After a short hydration break, we move on to Ko Ko Mo! We’ve been waiting impatiently for their return, and we’re not going to be disappointed. Warren Mutton on guitar and vocals and Kevin « K20 » Grosmolard on drums put on a dantesque show. One of them captivates everyone with his warm voice worthy of the greatest singers of the 60s and 70s and his stratospheric guitar playing, while the other circles around his drums before settling down to strike as if his life depended on it. Need Some Mo’ is obviously given pride of place, but their older releases are not forgotten. Each track is an opportunity for Warren and K20 to launch into jams that take each song much longer than on the album. It has to be said that the two musicians from Nantes have a very enthusiastic audience who enjoy every moment of the sublime psychedelic rock on offer this evening. The duo are delighted to be filling the venue they opened for last year, and they’ll be thanking us for the warm welcome. One of the highlights of the evening was of course their cover of Depeche Mode‘s ‘Personal Jesus’ in an impressive psych rock version. It’s impossible not to think of Robert Plant when you hear Warren‘s voice, and without apeing his illustrious counterpart he manages to make us feel the same emotions.After a set that went down like a drum, the band left us after one last spellbinding track, once again!
They quickly return to the stage for two songs that give the audience one last chance to express their boundless admiration for the Nantes duo! One last time? Not for sure! The two musicians return, but this time in the pit and acoustically, to offer us an intimate moment. No phones at their request (we don’t thank those who can’t resist taking them out anyway), and a giant bulb descending from the ceiling as the only lighting. It was on a magnificent version of ‘The Show Must Go On’, with the audience seated next to them, that the band bid us farewell after a truly unique and memorable evening!
Ko Ko Mo delivered a performance that the Lille audience will remember for a long time. It’s a rare and impressive thing for a duo to manage to get the crowd going in such a way. We can just imagine them playing a much bigger venue in Lille again very soon! Their rock took us on a journey for a good hour and a half, and that’s all we were waiting for! The duo have a great future ahead of them, and are one of our favourites of recent years.
