Si le Danemark compte de nombreux artistes et groupes célèbres dans différents genres, on peut souligner que c’est la terre natale de nombreux groupes rock et metal. Une terre prospère de laquelle est originaire Viva La Wolfe, et ça tombe bien puisque le premier album du groupe à paraître sur M&O Music le 24 novembre prochain répond au nom de Prosperity.

Avec l’intro de l’album, “In The Fields”, on est plongé dans un morceau ultra énergique là pour poser les bases : entre riff ultra stoner, voix très grungy et batterie massive, on se retrouve tout de suite à jouer des cervicales ! “LAX” continue d’assener son lot de riffs stoner, en ajoutant un groove basse – batterie qui rentre en tête dès les premiers instants. Le chant est puissant, et on retrouve sans trop s’y méprendre du Black Sabbath dans la structure principale du morceau.
“Paralysis” et “Long Gone” viennent calmer le jeu, en présentant un aspect instrumentalement plus grungy du groupe. Sur “Paralysis”, on retrouve un morceau avec une montée en puissance et un point culminant sur la seconde moitié du morceau, avec un solo qui rappellera inévitablement Queens of the Stone Age. “Long Gone” est une ballade acoustique qui apporte son lot de mélancolie, le tout basé sur une voix à la Scott Weiland sur le morceau “Creep”. Le côté Black Sabbath évoqué plus tôt sera très présent sur “Justice”, qui expose une structure très saccadée et un positionnement de la voix très familier à Ozzy Osbourne. Ici, c’est le basse – batterie qui dicte le ton, la guitare apportant une mélodie qui se veut plus secondaire sur la majorité du morceau.
“Despot”, morceau dévoilé et accompagné récemment par un clip, et “Leech” viendront apporter un nouveau lot de riffs stoner, avant d’arriver à la conclusion de l’album, “Druid’s Tail”, qui avec ses 8 minutes, expose une dernière fois les capacités du groupe à proposer un mélange stoner / grunge efficace et dans lequel on embarque aisément !
Avec ce premier album, Viva La Wolfe présentent un ensemble solide et un univers singulier qui, bien qu’ayant plusieurs influences, arrive à s’émanciper de cela en ajoutant notamment un toucher plutôt grunge à des morceaux orientés stoner. Le résultat est convaincant et donne envie d’être découvert en live, à vivement conseiller aux fans de Black Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots ou encore Alice in Chains !

While Denmark is home to many famous artists and bands in a variety of genres, it is also the birthplace of many rock and metal bands. A prosperous land from which Viva La Wolfe hails, and just as well, since the band’s debut album, to be released on M&O Music on 24 November, is called Prosperity.
With the album opener, « In The Fields », we’re plunged into an ultra-energetic track that lays the foundations: between ultra-stoner riffs, very grungy vocals and massive drums, we immediately find ourselves playing our brains out! « LAX » continues to deliver its fair share of stoner riffs, adding a bass and drum groove that gets stuck in your head right from the start. The vocals are powerful, and the main structure of the track is reminiscent of Black Sabbath.
« Paralysis » and « Long Gone » calm things down, presenting a more grungy instrumental side to the band. On « Paralysis », the track builds to a climax in the second half, with a solo inevitably reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age. « Long Gone » is an acoustic ballad with its own share of melancholy, based on a voice reminiscent of Scott Weiland‘s « Creep ». The Black Sabbath feel mentioned earlier is very much in evidence on « Justice », with its jerky structure and vocal positioning very familiar to Ozzy Osbourne. Here, it’s the bass and drums that set the tone, with the guitar providing a more secondary melody for the majority of the track.
« Despot », a track recently unveiled and accompanied by a video clip, and « Leech » bring a new batch of stoner riffs, before reaching the album’s conclusion, « Druid’s Tail », which at 8 minutes, shows once again the band’s ability to offer an effective stoner / grunge mix that’s easy to get into!
With this first album, Viva La Wolfe present a solid whole and a singular universe which, although having several influences, manages to emancipate itself from them by adding a rather grunge touch to stoner-oriented tracks. The result is convincing and makes you want to discover it live, so fans of Black Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots or Alice in Chains should definitely check them out!
