En mars dernier, une énorme journée grind avec Wormrot en tête d’affiche avec retourné The Black Lab. En ce 16 novembre, The Black Lab, We’re Not Worthy et A Gauche de La Lune se sont associés pour que la salle accueille un nouveau pleateau grind à tomber! Les légendes anglaises de Napalm Death sont de passage pour une date qui affiche sold out depuis un moment déjà! Pour les accompagner, pas moins de quatre groupes: les américain.ne.s de Escuela Grind, et les français de Chiens, Putrid Offal et FALSE. Autant dire qu’on aurait pu rêver mieux pour ce jeudi soir pluvieux. Direction la salle de Wasquehal pour une date qui entrera elle aussi dans la légende!

On commence fort avec FALSE et leur punk hardcore violence. La salle est déjà très bien remplie et on sent que beaucoup sont là pour se donner dans le pit toute la soirée. Les morceaux s’enchaînent à une vitesse folle, mais avec toujours des thématiques qu’on aime retrouver dans ce genre musical. Le groupe enchaine « Black Bloc Matters » et « The Shame Of Punk You’ve Done » avec une rage bien présente. On adore ce qu’on entend et la suite du set ne fera que nous le confirmer. « P.M.S » et « Without Outbreak Or Violence » confirment l’excellente santé de la formation nordiste qui met des claques dès les débuts de cette soirée. Dans le pit ça s’agite et certains montent même sur la scène taquiner les musiciens. Contrairement à ce qui était indiqué sur la setlist « Fast » n’est pas le morceau le plus court de la formation puisqu’il dépasse allègrement la minute! On arrive déjà en fin de set mais il reste « La Bagarre » pour continuer celle qui a déjà bien commencé.

On n’avait pas encore eu l’occasion de voir FALSE sur scène, maintenant que c’est fait on vous assure qu’on se replongera dans leur discographie très vite (comme leur musique) et on retournera les voir en live dès que possible! Un début de soirée qui annonce la couleur pour la suite! 

 

On enchaine avec Putrid Offal, groupe nordiste de gore death grind officiant depuis 1990! Le pied de micro est affublé de perfusions et les musiciens arrivent sur scène maculés de sang sur le visage ou sur la blouse pour ce qui est du bassiste. Comme pour le groupe précédent ça va vite, mais un peu moins vite. On va être honnête on est un peu moins entrés dans la prestation, mais le public se donne à fond et semble apprécier retrouver la formation sur scène. On salue tout de même le jeu de batterie bien énergique de Laye Louhenapessy qui martèle ses fûts comme un forcené tout au long du set. On laisse le public mosher et on s’éloigne un peu pour se rafraichir au bar avant la suite des évènements.

C’est l’heure pour Chiens, dernière formation française de la soirée, de monter sur la scène de The Black Lab devant une salle désormais pleine à craquer! Comme chaque groupe précédent, les fans sont présents pour donner de la force. Les nancéens démarrent en trombes avec « Longlive The Lies »! Ici on est face à du grind pur jus, bien revendicatif comme on aime! Ici pas le temps de se poser quasi tous les morceaux durent moins d’une minute, ce qui laisse au groupe le temps de nous en jouer 23! L’énergie scénique du groupe est indéniable et rapidement les slams et autres moshpits reprennent encore plus fort que précédemment. L’avant de la fosse devient quasi impraticable tant ça bouge, et ça sera le cas tout le reste de la soirée. « Punk Fluid », « Roadkill Party » ou « New World Order » mettent tout le monde d’accord et nous donnent envie de lever notre index pour l’agiter frénétiquement. On ne peut que se retrouver dans ce mélange de violence pure et de rapidité ahurissante. Pour vous donner une idée, on a réussi à garder pour nos archives vidéos persos un morceau de 26 secondes! Le set file à toute allure et lorsque le groupe quitte la scène après « I Am Just A Shit »,  on sait que la salle a passé un délicieux moment en leur compagnie. Et on peut surtout leur dire que le titre de leur dernier morceau est un beau mensonge, et que leur set vient de prouver tout l’inverse

Tout comme pour FALSE, on ira vite se plonger dans la discographie de Chiens et on espère retrouver le groupe en live sur nos terres nordistes au plus vite! Ce dernier set français de la soirée montre encore une fois la vitalité de notre scène grind et surtout que le public est présent pour donner de la force et de l’énergie aux groupes locaux et nationaux!

 

Direction les USA avec Escuela Grind. Le groupe avait retourné La Malterie il y a tout juste deux mois vu ce qu’on avait lu du report de Mégane et Oreÿ on avait envie de voir ça de nos propres yeux! Et dès le premier titre, une fusion totale entre le groupe et le public de The Black Lab a lieu dès les premières secondes du set. Il faut dire que Katarina Economou et ses acolytes se donnent à fond pour nous faire passer le meilleur des moments. Leur grind est d’une redoutable efficacité et nous laisse clairement sans voix face à la puissance vocale et scénique de la chanteuse, qui court littéralement partout. On est obligé de rester un peu plus loin dans la salle pour ne pas se faire littéralement avaler par le pit incessant. On sent que la formation est ravie de retrouver le public lillois et de revenir dans une salle bien plus grande que la fois précédente. Impossible de ne pas imaginer un futur radieux à la formation américaine tant leur set est une leçon du genre! L’ambiance électrique nous fait presque oublier que la fête est de trop courte durée à notre goût! On ressort du set du groupe américain heureux mais déjà bien fatigués, mais on a gardé le reste d’énergie qu’il fallait pour ce qui arrive.

Escuela Grind confirment ce soir que leur nom résonnera longtemps sur la scène grind mondiale! En tout cas le public lillois à prouvé qu’il était ravis de les retrouver et vu les retours pendant la pause en fin de set, on sent que leur prochain passage en tête d’affiche pourrait avoir lieu dans cette salle sans aucun souci! Une claque monumentale qui nous laisse prêt pour l’avalanche de fin de soirée! 

Et c’est parti pour le set de légende, celui de Napalm Death! Quel plaisir de retrouver Mark « Barney » Greenway, John Cook, Shane Embury et Danny Herrera sur la scène de The Black Lab, et on est pas les seuls à se dire ça si on en croit le large sourire sur le visage du programmateur de la salle. Les patrons de la scène grind ne sont pas là pour faire dans la dentelle, et tant mieux! D’entrée l’énergie du groupe se ressent dans toute la salle et le pit est une véritable zone de danger. Pendant un des titres, un slameur aura l’idée saugrenue de faire le poirier sur scène pour sauter dans le public, ce qui vaudra un pied dans le visage à Barney, qui ne lui en tiendra évidemment pas rigueur. Un set de Napalm Death est une expérience en soi, et entendre tous ces morceaux inoubliables s’enchainer est un véritable plaisir! Evidemment les classiques sont de la partie et le public les reprend en chœur, enfin autant que reprendre du grind en chœur est possible! On ne pouvait rêver meilleur fin de soirée que celle-ci. Barney n’hésitera pas à passer ses messages entre les morceaux, dont un « refugees welcome »qu’on ne peut que soutenir! La soirée se terminant tard, on manquera malheureusement les derniers titres car les transports ne nous attendrons malheureusement pas, mais on quitte la salle heureux et conquis par cette prestation inoubliable du groupe anglais. On imagine aisément comment le public a répondu aux derniers titres si on croit l’intensité du pit au moment où nous quittons la salle.

Napalm Death à The Black Lab était clairement LE concert à ne pas manquer en ce mois de novembre, et le public ne s’y est pas trompé en achetant les 666 billets disponibles! Le groupe a été totalement fidèle à sa réputation en nous offrant un show absolument parfait de bout en bout. Les parrains du grindcore sont encore là et on espère les retrouver au plus vite!

Last March, a huge grind day with Wormrot as headliner turned The Black Lab upside down. Now, on 16 November, The Black Lab, We’re Not Worthy and A Gauche de La Lune have teamed up to make sure the venue plays host to a new grind ship to die for! English legends Napalm Death are back for a date that’s been sold out for a while now! Accompanying them are no less than four bands: the Americans from Escuela Grind, and the French from Chiens, Putrid Offal and FALSE. All in all, we couldn’t have wished for a better line-up on a rainy Thursday evening. Now it’s off to Wasquehal for a date that will also go down in history!

We get off to a great start with FALSE and their hardcore punk violence. The room is already packed and it’s clear that a lot of people are there to give it their all for the evening. The songs follow one another at breakneck speed, but always with the same themes that we love to find in this musical genre. Black Bloc Matters » and « The Shame Of Punk You’ve Done » were two of the band’s most raucous numbers. We love what we hear, and the rest of the set only confirms this. « P.M.S » and « Without Outbreak Or Violence » confirmed the excellent health of the northern outfit, who were slamming it right from the start of the evening. The pit was buzzing with activity, and some even climbed on stage to tease the musicians. Contrary to what was indicated on the setlist, ‘Fast’ is not the band’s shortest track – it’s well over a minute long! We’re already coming to the end of the set, but there’s still « La Bagarre » (The Brawl) to continue what has already started so well.

We hadn’t yet had the chance to see FALSE live, but now that we have, we can assure you that we’ll be diving fast into their discography (like their music) and we’ll be going back to see them live as soon as possible! A great start to the evening that sets the tone for what’s to come!

Next up is Putrid Offal, a gore death grind band from the north of France who have been playing since 1990! The microphone stands are fitted with IV drips and the musicians arrive on stage with blood all over their faces and the bassist’s smock. As with the previous band, things are moving fast, but a little slower. We’ll be honest, we didn’t get into the performance as much, but the audience gave it their all and seemed to enjoy seeing the band back on stage. Laye Louhenapessy‘s energetic drumming was a particular highlight, as he hammered his drums like a madman throughout the set. The crowd are left to mosh and we head off to the bar for some refreshments before the next part of the show.

It’s time for Chiens, the last French band of the evening, to take to the stage at The Black Lab in front of a packed house! As with every previous band, the fans are out in force. The band from Nancy kick things off with a bang with ‘Longlive The Lies’! This is pure grind, with all the statements we love! There’s no time to rest here, almost all the tracks last less than a minute, giving the band plenty of time to play 23 of them! The band’s energy on stage is undeniable, and soon the slams and moshpits start up again, even louder than before. The front of the pit became almost impassable as it moved so fast, and this will be the case for the rest of the evening. « Punk Fluid », « Roadkill Party » and « New World Order » got everyone on the same wavelength, making us want to raise our index fingers and shake them frantically. You can’t help but identify with this mix of pure violence and bewildering speed. To give you an idea, we managed to save a 26-second track for our own video archives! The set went on at breakneck speed and when the band left the stage after ‘I Am Just A Shit’, we knew the crowd had had a great time with them. And above all, we can tell them that the title of their last song is a beautiful lie, and that their set has just proved the exact opposite.

As with FALSE, we’re off to delve into Chiens‘ discography and hope to see the band live in Northern France as soon as possible! This last French set of the evening shows once again the vitality of our grind scene and above all that the public is there to give strength and energy to local and national bands!

Off to the USA with Escuela Grind. The band brought the house down at La Malterie just two months ago, and from what we’d read in Mégane and Oreÿ’s review, we were keen to see it for ourselves! And from the very first track, a total fusion between the band and The Black Lab audience takes place within the first few seconds of the set. It has to be said that Katarina Economou and her bandmates give their all to ensure we have the time of our lives. Their grind is frighteningly effective and leaves us speechless in the face of the vocal and stage power of the singer, who literally runs everywhere. We were forced to stay a little further back in the room to avoid being swallowed up by the incessant pit. You can tell the band are delighted to be back in Lille and in a much bigger venue than last time. It’s impossible not to imagine a bright future for the American band, as their set is a lesson in the genre! The electric atmosphere almost made us forget that the party was too short for our liking! We came away from the American band’s set happy but already quite tired, but we still had the energy we needed for what was to come.

Escuela Grind confirmed tonight that their name will live on in the world grind scene for a long time to come! In any case, the crowd in Lille proved that they were delighted to see them again, and given the feedback during the break at the end of the set, we have a feeling that their next headlining appearance could take place in this venue without any worries! A monumental slap in the face that leaves us ready for the avalanche at the end of the evening!

And now it’s time for the legendary set by Napalm Death! What a pleasure it is to see Mark ‘Barney’ Greenway, John Cook, Shane Embury and Danny Herrera back on stage at The Black Lab, and we’re not the only ones to think so, if the broad smile on the face of one of the venue managers is anything to go by. The bosses of the grind scene aren’t here to cut any corners, and so much the better! From the outset, the band’s energy is felt throughout the venue, and the pit is a veritable danger zone. During one of the songs, a slammer had the absurd idea of doing a handstand on stage to jump into the audience, which earned Barney a foot in the face, who obviously didn’t hold it against him. A Napalm Death set is an experience in itself, and hearing all these unforgettable songs in succession is a real pleasure! Of course, the classics were there too, and the crowd sang along – as much as you can sing along to grind music! We couldn’t have wished for a better end to the evening than this. Barney didn’t hesitate to pass on his messages between songs, including a « refugees welcome » that we couldn’t help but support! As the evening drew to a close late on, we unfortunately missed the last few songs as our transport woudl not wait for us, but we left the venue happy and won over by this unforgettable performance by the English band. It’s easy to imagine how the crown responded to the last few tracks with the intensity of the moshpit we saw while leaving.

Napalm Death at The Black Lab was clearly THE gig not to be missed this November, and the crowd made no mistake in buying up the 666 tickets available! The band lived up to their reputation, putting on an absolutely perfect show from start to finish. The godfathers of grindcore are still at the top of their game, and we hope to see them again as soon as possible!
