En ce vendredi soir pluvieux du 24 novembre, on se dirige à Tournai, dans ce bar si accueillant qu’est Au Bout De Nos Rêves pour assister à l’Alternative Metal Night, soirée regroupant trois groupes qu’on a l’habitude de retrouver sur les scènes du Nord : Bïur, Scarletter et Madjora. Comme le nom de la soirée l’indique, la soirée a pour but de mettre en avant le métal alternatif sous toutes ses formes !

On retrouve Bïur pour commencer la soirée, formation évoluant depuis 2018. Le groupe alterne entre morceaux énergiques et morceaux plus calmes, mais où chaque musicien pourra montrer ses talents. Les sonorités de guitares sont riches et multiples, entre une guitare rythmique puissante et une guitare lead enrichie par de nombreux effets, autant sur les solos que sur des parties plus rythmiques. La basse se fait solide, et assure avec la batterie un ensemble groovy. Enfin, la voix est elle aussi puissante, mais n’hésite pas à se positionner plus en retrait sur les morceaux plus calmes, le tout chanté en français ! C’est l’occasion pour le public présent de découvrir les compositions du premier album de Bïur, Hyperbole, des compositions empreintes d’humour et d’un certain cynisme comme l’affiche le chanteur pendant le concert, notamment en demandant aux personnes présentes “les dépressifs dans la salle, levez le bras !”, mais aussi à travers de compositions comme “Chicken”, morceau dédié à l’anti-spécisme et… au poulycroc (le guitariste demandera qui dans la salle connaît ce met typique des friteries belges dans le bar).
Place à Scarletter, évoluant depuis 2016 à travers différents line-up, et évoluant à 4 après un passage sans deuxième guitare. Le groupe propose un metal mélodique particulièrement bien construit. Malheureusement, certains problèmes techniques (guitare principale et ampli ne fonctionnant plus) viendront entacher les premiers morceaux, ce qui pousse le chanteur à lâcher la guitare au bout de quelques titres, ce qui ne viendra pas altérer la qualité du set, on sent que les compositions sont maîtrisées, même à une seule guitare. L’occasion de découvrir les différents morceaux du groupe tels que “Addicted”, “Right Now” et “Follow Me” (les deux derniers étant disponibles à l’écoute sur Spotify). Un concert qui se trouve écourté suite aux problèmes techniques, mais qui donne un aperçu du groupe qui donnera sûrement aux personnes ne connaissant pas encore Scarletter d’aller les revoir !
Madjora clôture la soirée, quelques jours après un passage à The Black Lab, et on est directement embarqués sur des sonorités plus violentes que les 2 groupes précédents. Le chant féminin se fait puissant, avec une alternance entre passages plus chantés et growls maîtrisés ! L’accordage bas de la guitare, qui n’est pas sans rappeler certains accordages utilisés dans le djent, est là pour poser les bases des compositions. Encore une fois sur la soirée, on peut souligner le travail de composition effectué, particulièrement efficace et qu’on sent maîtrisé. Le groupe n’hésite pas à hausser le ton pour décrocher quelques pogos du public présent en guise de fermeture d’une soirée réussie !
Cette Alternative Metal Night a tenu ses promesses, présentant trois groupes aux sonorités bien différentes, mais tous ayant accomplis un travail de composition qui se ressent sur scène. On ne peux que saluer l’initiative d’une telle soirée, qui permet de faire découvrir des groupes bien actifs sur la scène locale du Nord / Pas de Calais.

On the rainy Friday evening of 24 November, we headed to Tournai, to the welcoming bar that is Au Bout De Nos Rêves, to attend Alternative Metal Night, an evening featuring three bands that we’re used to seeing on stages in the North of France: Bïur, Scarletter and Madjora. As the name suggests, the aim of the evening is to showcase alternative metal in all its forms!

The evening kicks off with Bïur, a band that has been evolving since 2018. The band alternates between energetic and calmer tracks, with each musician showing off his or her talents. The guitar sounds are rich and varied, with a powerful rhythm guitar and a lead guitar enhanced by a host of effects, both on the solos and on the more rhythmic parts. The bass is solid and, along with the drums, provides a groovy ensemble. Finally, the vocals are also powerful, but don’t hesitate to take a back seat on the quieter tracks, all sung in French! The audience was treated to songs from Bïur’s debut album, Hyperbole, full of humour and a certain cynicism, as the singer made clear during the concert, asking those present to « raise your arms if you’re depressed in the room! » buat also with titles like “Chicken”, a title about anti-specism and poulycroc (the guitarist will ask who in the audience knows this typical Belgian chip shop dish in the bar).
Now it’s time for Scarletter, who have been evolving through different line-ups since 2016, and are now a 4-piece after a spell without a second guitar. The band’s melodic metal is particularly well constructed. Unfortunately, some technical problems (main guitar and amp no longer working) marred the first few tracks, forcing the singer to give up the guitar after a few songs, but this didn’t detract from the quality of the set – you could feel that the compositions had been mastered, even with just one guitar. This was an opportunity to discover the band’s various tracks, including ‘Addicted’, ‘Right Now’ and ‘Follow Me’ (the last two of which are available to listen to on Spotify). The concert was cut short due to technical problems, but it gave a glimpse of the band that will surely encourage anyone who hasn’t heard of Scarletter to go and see them again!
Madjora bring the evening to a close, a few days after a stint at The Black Lab, and we’re immediately drawn into a more violent sound than the previous 2 bands. The female vocals are powerful, alternating between more sung passages and controlled growls! The low tuning of the guitar, reminiscent of some of the tunings used in djent, is there to lay the foundations of the compositions. Once again this evening, the band’s songwriting is particularly effective, and you get the feeling they’ve mastered it. The band didn’t hesitate to turn up the heat and get a few pogos out of the audience as they rounded off a successful evening!
This Alternative Metal Night lived up to its promise, presenting three bands with very different sounds, but all having accomplished a composition work that can be felt on stage. We can only applaud the initiative of such an evening, which allows us to discover bands that are very active on the local scene in the Nord/Pas de Calais region.
