Les allemands de Unprocessed ont prouvé en cinq albums que leur métal progressif / djent était une valeur sure de la scène européenne. Aujourd’hui le groupe nous revient, toujours en indépendant avec un sixième album, intitulé …and everything in between. Les quelques singles proposés par le groupe depuis quelques mois annoncent déjà une belle sortie, et on part se plonger dans le reste de l’album pour voir ce qu’il en est!

La basse lourde de David Levy nous accueille avec fracas dans « Hell ». En quelques secondes le groupe montre qu’il prend encore du galon avec cette nouvelle sortie. La voix de Manuel Gardner Fernandes est d’une puissance et d’une versatilité folle. Evidemment les instruments ont une place de choix dans cet album et le mixage rend totalement hommage à ce que le groupe peut proposer depuis ses débuts. Les rythmes sont changeants et bien énergiques comme on aime. Ne cherchez pas dans « Lore » ou « Thrash » des sonorités déjà entendues maintes fois, le groupe expérimente et nous laisse impressionnés par autant de maîtrise. Le duo de guitare formé par Manuel Gardner Fernandes et Christoph Schultz s’illustre sur chaque titre par son envie de nous retourner avec des riffs toujours plus fous, et toujours plus inventifs. Leon Pfeifer est, quant à lui, en très grande forme derrière sa batterie. Son jeu est redoutablement technique sans être dans une démonstration permanente, et c’est très plaisant à entendre. Dans certains groupes de ce genre, l’absence de structure des morceaux peut faire sortir l’auditeur de l’écoute, ici les morceaux sont justement structurés pour ne jamais nous perdre tout en nous surprenant à chaque instant. Sur « Die on the Cross of the Martyr » le groupe accueille Tim Henson et Scott LePage de Polyphia pour une nouvelle avalanche musicale . On y sent évidemment une complicité très forte entre les deux groupes et le mélange de leurs univers se fait sans effort. « Abysm » démarre par la voix quasi sans musique de Manuel, étonnant dans un album de ce type mais petit à petit la basse et la batterie arrivent avant une arrivée progressive des guitares, qui restent tout de même en retrait sur cette composition étonnante. Le dernier titre « Purgatory » est une nouvelle leçon de prog métal donnée par des musiciens de grand talent qui depuis leurs débuts ne laissent rien au hasard.

Avec …and everything in between, Unrpocessed continuent leur route avec un brio constant et une réussite totalement due à leur travail acharné pour proposer à la fois une musique technique mais aussi inspirée et inspirante. Cet album ne déroge pas à la règle et nous laisse entrevoir un set surpuissant lors de leur tournée française en compagnie de Tesseract en janvier prochain. Over the past five albums, Germany’s Unprocessed have proved that their progressive metal/djent sound is a sure thing on the European scene. Now the band are back, still on their own, with a sixth album, entitled …and everything in between. The handful of singles released by the band over the last few months already suggest that it’s going to be a great release, and we’re off to delve into the rest of the album to see what it’s all about!

David Levy‘s heavy bass welcomes us with a bang in « Hell ». In the space of a few seconds, the band show that they’re still going strong with this new release. Manuel Gardner Fernandes‘s voice is insanely powerful and versatile. Obviously, the instruments have a place of choice on this album, and the mix is a total tribute to what the band has been able to offer since its beginnings. The rhythms are as changeable and energetic as we like. Don’t look for sounds you’ve heard many times before in ‘Lore’ or ‘Thrash’, the band experiment and leave us impressed by their mastery. The guitar duo of Manuel Gardner Fernandes and Christoph Schultz are outstanding on every track for their desire to turn us inside out with ever crazier, ever more inventive riffs. Leon Pfeifer is in fine form behind the drums. His playing is fearsomely technical without being overly demonstrative, and it’s a pleasure to hear. In some bands of this genre, the lack of structure in the tracks can take the listener out of the listening experience, but here the tracks are structured in such a way as never to lose you, while at the same time surprising you at every turn. On ‘Die on the Cross of the Martyr’, the band welcomes Tim Henson and Scott LePage from Polyphia for another musical avalanche. The two bands are obviously very close, and the blending of their worlds is effortless. « Abysm » kicks off with Manuel‘s almost music-free vocals, which is surprising for an album of this type, but gradually the bass and drums come in before the guitars gradually take over, although they remain in the background on this astonishing composition. The final track, ‘Purgatory’, is another lesson in prog metal from these highly talented musicians, who have left nothing to chance since their debut.

With …and everything in between, Unrpocessed continue on their path with constant brilliance, a success entirely due to their hard work in offering music that is both technical and inspired and inspiring. This album is no exception, and we can look forward to a powerful set on their europe and UK tour with Tesseract next January.
