S’il y a bien un artiste inclassable, évoluant entre blues, rock, garage et soul, c’est bien Jim Jones ! C’est donc avec une énergie débordante de découvrir le nouveau projet du Godfather of Garage, Jim Jones All Stars, né suite à la pause forcée de Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind dû au confinement, que l’on se rend au Poche de Béthune. Une soirée qui s’annonce haute en couleur, le chanteur s’étant entouré dans ce nouveau groupe de deux saxophonistes, d’un claviériste, en plus de sa section rythmique habituelle.

Comme le chanteur l’annonçait avant cette tournée, cette soirée allait être l’occasion pour les fans de sa carrière d’assister à un mix entre découverte des morceaux du Jim Jones All Stars, mais aussi de redécouvrir son back catalogue très riche : The Jim Jones Revue, Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind, The Hypnotics…
C’est ainsi que d’entrée de jeu, on pourra commencer à s’échauffer pour la soirée à venir avec “Cement Mixer”, classique de The Jim Jones Revue. L’occasion pour le chanteur / guitariste de nous livrer ses premières minutes de concert avec sa voix atypique, ses riffs de guitare ravageurs et pour la section rythmique de nous abreuver d’un groove hors norme qui décrocheront d’emblée les premiers pas de danse du public qui semble en transe ! “Gimme the Grease” continuera d’asséner le rock’n’roll version Jim Jones au public présent, avec son charismatique frontman en grande forme, troquant sa guitare pour des maracas. L’occasion aussi pour le chanteur de faire participer le public, ce qui sera le point central du concert : un véritable moment de partage, sublimé par la proximité que permet une salle comme Le Poche !
La suite du concert délivrera son lot de tubes, entre morceaux de The Jim Jones Revue (“Burning Your House Down”), de Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind (“Satan’s Got His Heart Set On You”) et divers covers (“Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave” de Little Richard, “Run Run Run” de The Velvet Underground ou encore “It’s Your Voodoo Working” de Charles Sheffield – présent en cover sur l’album de Jim Jones All Stars -).
On assiste là à une véritable démonstration de groove infectieux et qui rentre en tête au point d’en faire inlassablement danser. La présence de deux saxophonistes ajoute une couleur soul à l’ensemble, tout en ayant un contraste très intéressant avec la voix caverneuse de Jim Jones et les guitares aux sonorités très vintage.
La fin du concert sera l’occasion de retrouver quelques pépites du passé du chanteur : “Rock N Roll Psychosis”, “Princess & the Frog” (The Jim Jones Revue) et “Shakedown” (Thee Hypnotics) dans un premier temps, qui assureront une clôture très garage rock au set avant un retour sur scène pour interpréter le classique “512” avec son piano endiablé, sa section rythmique possédée pour un bouquet final enflammé !
C’est tout sourire que nous ressortons de ce concert, avec la véritable impression d’avoir passé en revue la carrière de Jim Jones, et d’avoir partagé avec lui le plongeon tant recherché dans les racines du rock’n’roll. On retiendra un set énergique, où partage et convivialité étaient au rendez-vous !

If ever there was an unclassifiable artist, moving between blues, rock, garage and soul, it’s Jim Jones! So, right from the start, we can start warming up for the evening ahead with ‘Cement Mixer’, a classic from The Jim Jones Revue. It’s a chance for the singer/guitarist to give us his first few minutes in concert, with his atypical voice and devastating guitar riffs, and for the rhythm section to fill us with an out-of-this-world groove that immediately gets the audience dancing in a trance! « Gimme the Grease » continues the Jim Jones version of rock’n’roll, with its charismatic frontman in top form, swapping his guitar for maracas. It’s also an opportunity for the singer to get the audience involved, which will be the focal point of the concert: a real moment of sharing, enhanced by the close proximity offered by a venue like Le Poche!
The rest of the concert was packed with hits, including tracks from The Jim Jones Revue (« Burning Your House Down »), Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind (« Satan’s Got His Heart Set On You ») and various covers (« Can’t Believe You Wanna Leave » by Little Richard, « Run Run Run » by The Velvet Underground and « It’s Your Voodoo Working » by Charles Sheffield – featured as a cover on the Jim Jones All Stars album).
It’s a real demonstration of infectious groove that gets into your head to the point of making you dance non-stop. The presence of two saxophonists adds a soulful flavour to the whole, contrasting nicely with Jim Jones‘ cavernous voice and vintage-sounding guitars.
At the end of the concert, we’re treated to a few nuggets from the singer’s past: « Rock N Roll Psychosis », « Princess & the Frog » (The Jim Jones Revue) and « Shakedown » (The Hypnotics), which bring the set to a garage-rock close before returning to the stage to perform the classic « 512 », with its frenzied piano and possessed rhythm section for a fiery finale!
We left the concert all smiles, with the real impression of having reviewed the career of Jim Jones, and of having shared with him the long-awaited plunge into the roots of rock’n’roll. It was an energetic set, where sharing and conviviality were the order of the day!
