En cette veille de mois de décembre et alors que le froid s’installe sur la métropole lilloise, Cerbère Coryphée nous invite à une soirée stoner doom psychédélique qui nous envoie planer dans une autre dimension. Les lillois de Karma Sutra nous préparent au décollage et nous voyageons avec les italiens de Ufomammut, bien connus des amateurs du genre. Ce 30 novembre était donc le grand rendez-vous lillois des amateurs du genre

Karma Sutra arrive devant une salle déjà bien remplie. Ils avaient déjà fait un passage remarqué et apprécié sur cette scène lors de la fête de la musique. On est donc très heureux de les retrouver ce soir. Dès le premier titre, le trio nous montre toute l’étendue de leur talent, avec des passages lents et planant laissant la part belle à la basse de, et des passages plus rapides et énervés durant lesquels on entend davantage la guitare et tous les effets associés. On augmentera ensuite un peu le tempo général avec un titre un peu plus pêchu. Les temps de chant conjoint entre Aleksandr (basse) et Edouard (guitare) apportent une profondeur envoûtante aux titres proposés ce soir. Les trois musiciens interagissent avec le public, l’enjoignant à bouger davantage. Celui-ci n’est pas forcément dans une humeur à pogoter mais ce n’est pas pour autant que la prestation du groupe n’est pas largement saluée par le public. La setlist est particulièrement intéressante notamment dans l’ordre des morceaux proposés, en commençant par mettre la basse grasse du stoner en avant, puis en faisant la part belle à la guitare avant que le concert ne se termine sur un équilibre et une osmose entre ces deux instruments. Au fond de la scène, Gwendal à la batterie soutient tous ces éléments mélodiques par une rythmique impeccable et équilibrant l’ensemble. Le set se termine avec « This is dope », qui est aussi le dernier titre de leur album Karmasutrized. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir retrouvé cette formation lilloise et nous avons déjà hâte d’être à notre prochaine rencontre !
On enfume un peu la scène et on accueille le trio italien UFOMAMMUT à l’heure prévue. Quelques réglages du son sont nécessaires en début de set mais cela n’entache pas le déroulement de la soirée, et le groupe nous fera rapidement oublier ce détail par son talent. Le premier titre montre un enchaînement parfait avec le groupe précédent, étant assez énergique (pour du doom psyché entendons-nous !). Dès le deuxième titre, le rythme ralentit et la lourdeur s’installe. On entre dans une autre dimension temporo-spatiale : celle du doom psyché. Le chant de Urlo nous y accueille et on entre nous même dans une espèce d’état second, hors du temps. La musique ne s’arrête jamais réellement avec des transitions continues entre les titres. UFOMAMMUT ne nous laisse pas quitter leur univers et ça nous arrange bien ! Des effets dans la voix couplés à une mélodie plus aiguë à la guitare, sans base rythmique, nous font planer encore un peu plus haut. L’atmosphère enfumée de la salle nous maintient dans cet état. La batterie reprend très progressivement et on retombe dans la lourdeur psychédélique du groupe. On a parfois l’impression de cris bestiaux au chant grâce à la reverb ajoutée. La Bulle a rarement aussi bien porté son nom puisque nous sommes tellement dans la nôtre que lorsqu’on regarde notre montre, on se rend compte que le groupe joue depuis presque une heure alors qu’on en pensait à peine la moitié passée ! Visuellement, Levre (batterie) est quasiment au même niveau que Urlo (basse, voix) et Poia (guitare), à l’image de l’équilibre de la formation au niveau des sonorités. UFOMAMMUT impose sa patte et nous offre tout ce qu’on attend de ce style, en nous amenant dans leur univers. Et finalement, au moment où on se dit qu’on a peut-être bien fait le tour du propriétaire, le concert se termine et UFOMAMMUT nous fait atterrir à la Bulle dans un timing parfait.
Pour ne pas changer les bonnes habitudes, nous avons encore passé une superbe soirée musicale organisée par Cerbère Coryphée. Karma Sutra est une valeur sûre du stoner et nous pouvons nous estimer heureux de les avoir dans nos contrées. On leur souhaite de pouvoir exporter au maximum leur musique qui le mérite amplement. Ils nous ont bien préparé pour les mastodontes UFOMAMMUT. Ces derniers nous ont fait décoller, planer et voyager grâce à leurs sonorités lourdes et leur tempo lent. Le retour à la réalité est parfois difficile, mais heureusement nous pouvons prolonger le dépaysement grâce à Crookhead, leur trois titres sorti en octobre 2023.
On this eve of December, as the cold sets in over Lille, Cerbère Coryphée invites us to an evening of psychedelic stoner doom that will send us soaring into another dimension. Lille’s Karma Sutra get us ready for take-off, and we’re off with the Italians from Ufomammut, well known to fans of the genre. So, on 30 November, Lille was the place to be for fans of the genre.

Karma Sutra arrived to a packed house. They had already made a notable and much-appreciated appearance on this stage during the Fête de la Musique. So we’re delighted to see them again this evening. From the very first track, the trio show us the full extent of their talent, with slow, soaring passages that give pride of place to the bass, and faster, angrier passages during which we hear more of the guitar and all the associated effects. The overall tempo is then upped a notch with a slightly punchier track. The joint vocals between Aleksandr (bass) and Edouard (guitar) add a spellbinding depth to the tracks on offer this evening. The three musicians interact with the audience, urging them to get moving. The audience may not have been in the mood to bang, but that doesn’t mean the band’s performance wasn’t widely acclaimed. The setlist was particularly interesting, notably in the order of the tracks, starting with the fat stoner bass, then giving pride of place to the guitar before the concert ended with a balance and osmosis between the two instruments. At the back of the stage, Gwendal on drums backs up all these melodic elements with an impeccable rhythm section that balances everything out. The set ends with ‘This is dope’, which is also the last track on their album Karmasutrized. We’re delighted to have found this band again.
The stage was smoked out a little and Italian trio UFOMAMMUT arrived on time. A few sound adjustments are necessary at the start of the set, but this doesn’t detract from the evening’s proceedings, and the band’s talent will quickly make us forget this detail. The first track is a perfect segue from the previous band, being quite energetic (for psychedelic doom, that is!). From the second track onwards, the pace slows and the heaviness sets in. We enter another temporo-spatial dimension: that of psychedelic doom. Urlo‘s vocals welcome us in, and we ourselves enter a kind of second state, out of time. The music never really stops, with continuous transitions between tracks. UFOMAMMUT never let us leave their world, and that’s just fine! Effects in the vocals coupled with a higher-pitched guitar melody, with no rhythmic base, make us float a little higher. The smoky atmosphere of the room keeps us in this state. The drums pick up very gradually and we fall back into the psychedelic heaviness of the band. The added reverb sometimes gives the impression of bestial screams on vocals. Rarely has La Bulle lived up to its name so well, because we’re so into it that when we look at our watches we realise the band have been playing for almost an hour when we thought it was barely half over!
Visually, Levre (drums) is almost on the same level as Urlo (bass, vocals) and Poia (guitar), reflecting the balance of the band’s sound. UFOMAMMUT impose their mark and offer us everything we’ve come to expect from this style, taking us into their world. And finally, just when you think you’ve had a good look around, the concert comes to an end and UFOMAMMUT land us at the Bulle in perfect time.
Not to change our good habits, we had another superb evening of music organised by Cerbère Coryphée. Karma Sutra are a stoner force to be reckoned with, and we’re lucky to have them in our neck of the woods. We hope they’ll be able to export as much of their music as possible, as it richly deserves it. They’ve prepared us well for the behemoths UFOMAMMUT. With their heavy sounds and slow tempo, UFOMAMMUT had us soaring, soaring and travelling. The return to reality is sometimes difficult, but fortunately we can prolong the disorientation thanks to Crookhead, their three-track album released in October 2023.
