Samedi 2 décembre, nous nous sommes retrouvés au Bistrot de St So pour la soirée METAL EDITION #2, une soirée dédiée à la culture alternative organisée par Arthur Alternatif. Ce n’est pas moins de trois groupes qui sont présents pour animer notre soirée avec les lillois Unfate, les jeunes bruxellois d’Ice Sealed Eyes et enfin le groupe parisien qui s’est à nouveau réuni en 2021, As They Burn. Tout est prévu pour que l’on oublie le froid de l’extérieur, la soirée se terminera même sur le Dj Set d’Alternight. Quoi de mieux pour se réchauffer que des bons pogos sur du métal ?

Le principe de la soirée est simple, c’est une entrée libre qui va permettre de récupérer des dons (sur le principe un éco cup égal un euro) afin de soutenir HelpAssos qui distribue des boîtes à chaussures remplies de denrées alimentaires aux sans-abri. Nous sommes là pour la musique, mais pas uniquement car quelques stands sont aussi présents ! On retrouve le Distrot pour faire le plein de vinyles, Jessiculottes avec des ongles hauts en couleur ou encore Alternacult, marque de prêts-à-porter alternative.
La soirée commence avec le groupe de metal alternatif lillois Unfate, c’est avec énergie qu’ils arrivent pour échauffer le public de Saint Sauveur. Les pogos sont encore un peu timides mais le petit monde se rapproche de la scène pour écouter les rifs de guitare accompagnés des textes chantés par Thomas en voix claire parsemés de quelques screams. Le quatuor a sorti un EP en 2021 et est en train de préparer la suite.
Ils viennent de sortir le deuxième volet de leur triptyque avec l’EP Vol.2:Fragments et sont déjà sur scène pour le défendre, il s’agit d’Ice Sealed Eyes. Lille les accueille pour leur toute première date française ! Le groupe de Newcore belge nous adresse leur passion pour la musique au travers de riffs énergiques, de puissants breakdowns surplombés par la voix puissante et captivante de Noé. Énergie est certainement le bon mot pour décrire ce moment de la soirée car les pogos sont au rendez-vous devant la scène. L’équipe au complet foule la scène car leur photographe les rejoint au chant pour leur titre “Deadweight”. Nous avons aussi le droit à la reprise de BONES “Oxygen” avant de finir avec un titre de 2022 “Hollow” en entraînant le public à reprendre en chœur le refrain. Marye et Victor avaient déjà eu l’occasion de découvrir et d’apprécier Ice Sealed Eyes en avril à Bruxelles lorsqu’ils faisaient la première partie d’Hypno5e. Ils les avaient décrit comme un des groupes à suivre et nous allons définitivement continuer à le faire !
Le groupe qui était attendu par beaucoup de personnes dans la salle était bien sûr As They Burn. Avec l’arrivée du groupe sur scène et leurs premiers morceaux, le froid n’est plus qu’un mauvais souvenir de l’extérieur. Les parisiens ne sont plus à présenter malgré quelques années d’absence, le groupe de deathcore donne vie autant à leurs anciens morceaux qu’à des plus récents comme “Ego Death” où la force de la voix de Kevin Traoré allié à des riffs énergiques ainsi qu’un rythme entraînant créé par la batterie déferle toute sa puissance sur les fans présents. Le public s’est très vite amassé autour de la scène, les pogos sont présents avec plus ou moins de violence juste à l’avant de la scène tandis que les mouvements sont bien plus timides mais toujours existant vers l’arrière. Comme lors de leur passage à Petit Bain plus tôt cette année, le groupe est d’une énergie sans limite. Avant de terminer sur “Sons of Shiva”, ils mentionnent aussi qu’il s’agit de l’avant-dernier concert de leur chanteur, Kevin Traoré, une dernière apparition se fera lors du concert d’adieu de Betraying The Martyrs le 27 janvier. As They Burn a définitivement eu son effet sur le public, des pogos et une foule ravie de ce concert repart tout doucement reprendre un verre avant la prochaine partie.
Pour finir cette soirée, il s’agit de la clôture de la tournée 2023 d’Alternight. Arthur Alternatif est déjà passé à deux reprises sur scène pendant le set de Ice Sealed Eyes et celui de As They Burn pour les accompagner le temps d’une chanson. Le set démarre, à son habitude, avec des coups réguliers de caisse claire avant d’ouvrir le set avec “Suffocation” de Kayzo et Bad Omens. Le public s’est réduit mais l’ambiance est toujours présente et sur la scène les invités s’enchaînent parmi lesquels on retrouve des membres de Monnekÿn, le chanteur/guitariste de FreeHowling ou encore le chanteur et le guitariste d’Ice Sealed Eyes. Cependant le set est écourté par manque de temps pour le reste de la soirée, comme l’a dit Arthur, c’est le risque lorsque beaucoup de groupes sont prévus au programme.
Pendant la soirée chaque groupe pensait à rappeler que la soirée était caritative au profit de HelpAssos. Il y a aussi eu quelques interventions de MC La Bagarre comme un blindtest pour gagner des places de concerts qui occupaient le public entre deux groupes. Un samedi soir chargé en musique venu des alentours, le tout dans un endroit qui reste connu et convivial.
On saturday 2nd of december, we went out for a night at Bistrot Saint Sauveur for the METAL EDITION #2, an evening dedicated to alternative culture organized by Arthur Alternatif. It was no less than three bands gathered to bring to life the end of our day with the band based in Lille Unfate, Ice Sealed Eyes that is coming from Bruxelles and finally As They Burn that was brought together again back in 2021. Everything is ready for us to forget about the cold weather outside, the night will even end with Alternight’s DJ Set. Do you have a better idea to get warm than some moshpits in a metal show?

The evening principle is quite simple, it is a free entry that will enable people to give some donations (one ecocup equal one euro) to support HelpAssos. They are giving out shoeboxes that are full of food to homeless people. We are here for the music, but not only as we can also find some stands with Le Distrot where you will be able to restock your vinyls, Jessiculottes to pimp your nails as well as Alternacult, an alternative streetwear brand.
The night started with the alternative metal band Unfate. They arrive on the stage full of vitality to warm up Saint Sauveur’s public. The mosh pits are still shy for the moment but will definitely get stronger through the show. The audience is drawn closer thanks to the guitar’s riffs that are accompanied by the texts sung by Thomas with a clear voice and some screams. The quartet released an EP back in 2021 but they are working hard on what will be following.
They just delivered the second section of their three-part work with the EP Vol.2:Fragments and they are already running the stage to defend it, we are talking about Ice Sealed Eyes. And Saint Sauveur is their first concert in France! The Belgian Newcore band express their passion for their music through energetic riffs and powerful breakdowns that are highlighted by Noé’s compelling and captivating vocals. Energy is probably the right word to describe this moment of the evening as mosh pits can’t be avoided when you are in front of the stage. The entire crew is stepping on stage as the band is joined by their photographer for the vocals of their title “Deadweight”. We are also able to hear their excellent cover of BONES with “Oxygen” before they exit the stage with a title from 2022 “Hollow” where the audience is encouraged to join during the chorus. Marye and Victor already had the occasion to discover and to enjoy the band Ice Sealed Eyes at Brussels in April when they opened the show for Hypno5e. They described them as a band to follow closely and we will continue to do so!
The band that many people were waiting for in the room was of course As They Burn! With the arrival of the band on the stage and their first songs, the cold outside seems nothing more than the memories of a bad dream. The Parisian band is not one that we still have to introduce, even with a few years of absence the deathcore band is bringing to life their old songs as much as the new ones such as “Ego Death”. With the title being led by the strength of Kevin Traoré’s voice allied with aggressive riffs and lively rhythms created by the drums, all the power of their music is unfolded on the audience. People very quickly got closer to the stage, mosh pits at the front rows and in the back some movements are here but still a little bit shy. As when they played at Petit Bain earlier this year, the band’s energy is boundless.. Before their last song, “Sons of Shiva”, the band mentioned that it was the second to last concert with their singer. One last apparition will be made for the farewell concert of Betraying The Martyr on January 27th. As They Burn definitely has its effect on the public as joyful people are slowly getting back to the bar for a drink before the next part of the evening.
To end the night, we are having the last date for the 2023 tour of Alternight. Arthur Alternatif already appeared two times this evening on the stage, once with Ice Sealed Eyes and once with As They Burn in order to assist them for one song each. As usual, the set begins with regular drum beats before we can hear “Suffocate” by Kayzo and Bad Omens. The audience is smaller but the atmosphere is still here, and on stage the guests are coming one after the other, we can find members of Monnekÿn, the singer and guitarist of FreeHowling but also the singer and the guitarist of Ice Sealed Eyes. However, the set must end earlier than we thought as the time is coming to an end but as Arthur said, this is one of the risks when many bands hit the stage.
During the evening, each band thought to remind the audience that they could easily help HelpAssos. Some interventions were made by MC La Bagarre such as a music quizz to win concert tickets during the short time between the bands. It was a great Saturday night, full of music from here and around in a great and pleasant place.
