Le 3 décembre fût une journée commencée sous la neige lilloise mais bien arrivée sur Paris afin de se faire réchauffer par le rock shoegaze des californiens de Teenage Wrist. La tournée vient suite à la sortie de leur album Still Love, un de mes top albums sortis en 2023. Afin de les accompagner dans cette tournée, ils ont choisi les parisiens qui ne font que monter : Pærish. Première date française et première date de la tournée pour le groupe ce soir au Point Ephémère.

On commence donc cette soirée avec le quatuor parisien de Shoegaze/ noisy rock , Pærish. Leur arrivée donne l’impression d’avoir déjà la tête d’affiche en face de nous, tant le public s’exclame. Tous les copains sont là pour soutenir le groupe et montrer de quoi la scène parisienne est capable. Nous sommes donc accueilli avec trois titres du dernier album You’re in both dreams (and you’re scared) à savoir “ Sequoia”, “Daydreaming”, “Houses of American Style”. Sans surprise la salle est conquise dès les premiers morceaux, il est vrai que même si le genre se veut intimiste, Pærish réussit à manier au mieux le Shoegaze en ajoutant sa touche au mélange pour ne pas tomber dans les déjà-vus. On sent une évolution dans leur son depuis l’album Fixed it all , les guitares de Frédéric Wah sont plus bruyantes, les chants de Mathias Court plus tristes. Le groupe suit sa setlist et reste impeccable dans leur style, la basse de Martin étant bien présente sur certains sons. Le groupe est présent dans la lignée des groupes de grunge / shoegaze explosant dans ce revival comme nous avons pu le constater avec Soul Blind et Superbloom plus récemment.
Après avoir vécu le concert de Militaire Gun ce vendredi et en combinant avec le Pærish de ce soir, nous sommes clairement prêts à nous replonger dans les teen movies avec lesquels la génération 90 a vécu.
En parlant de Teen, c’est au tour de Teenage Wrist d’arriver sur scène. Le duo est accompagné d’un bassiste et un autre guitariste pour compléter la line up. Comme pour Pærish , le duo vient défendre son troisième album Still Love. Le groupe sent le DIY a plein nez produisant leur album quasiment eux-mêmes. Les américains viennent pour la première fois sur l’hexagone et le moins que l’on puisse dire c’est qu’ils sont attendus. On commence directement avec “Sunshine” qui fait passer la salle dans une autre dimension, le riff saturé à la fuzz dès le départ met le ton. Le public reprend en chœur le refrain puis vient “Dark Sky” qui finit de chauffer la salle pour voir les premiers pogos se former. Marshall Gallagher assure l’échange avec le public, blaguant sur leur état de santé et leur jet lag étant arrivé la veille. Partant de l’idée de départ que le groupe venait défendre son album, c’est avec une très bonne surprise que nous pouvons avoir des titres du premier album dont “Dweeb” ou “ Swallow” avec ces parties de guitares déformées à la Whammy qui raviront tout fan de Tom Morello dans la salle. Même si la fatigue est présente, le groupe assure un prestation parfaite dans son imperfection. En ressort une diversité très appréciable passant de passage calme à des titres comme “ Cigarette Two Step” où le public n’attend que les contacts et la bagarre. Afin de finir le set quoi d’autre que le tube “ Earth is a black hole” faisant rentrer une dernière fois le Point Ephémère en ébullition.
C’est ainsi que se termine cette soirée dont j’avais à titre personnel beaucoup d’attente. Pour une première date française, Teenage Wrist a su mettre tout le monde d’accord et pousser les curieux à s’intéresser un peu plus à ce futur grand groupe de la scène shoegaze américaine. Nous pouvons juste mettre un petit point négatif de ne pas avoir le petit feat avec Softcult “Still Love” lors de cette soirée.

This 3rd of december began in the snow in Lille, but we arrived in Paris to warm up with the shoegaze rock of Californian band Teenage Wrist. The tour follows the release of their album Still Love, one of my top albums of 2023. To accompany them on this tour, they have chosen the Parisians who are just getting started: Pærish. First French date and first tour date for the band tonight at Le Point Ephémère.

The evening kicks off with Parisian shoegaze/noisy rock quartet Pærish. Their arrival gives the impression that the headliner is already in front of us, so much so that the audience exclaims. All their friends are there to support the band and show what the Parisian scene is capable of. We were greeted with three tracks from the latest album You’re in both dreams (and you’re scared), namely ‘Sequoia’, ‘Daydreaming’ and ‘Houses of American Style’. Unsurprisingly, the crowd was won over by the first tracks, and it’s true that even if the genre is meant to be intimate, Pærish manage to handle Shoegaze as well as they can, adding their own touch to the mix so as not to fall into déjà-vu. Their sound has evolved since the Fixed it all album, with Frédéric Wah‘s guitars louder and Mathias Court‘s vocals sadder. The band follow their setlist and remain impeccable in their style, Martin‘s bass being very present on certain sounds. The band are right up there with the grunge/shoegaze bands exploding in this revival, as we’ve seen with Soul Blind and Superbloom more recently.
After seeing the Militaire Gun concert on Friday and combining it with tonight’s Pærish, we’re clearly ready to dive back into the teen movies that the 90s generation lived with.
Speaking of Teen, it’s Teenage Wrist‘s turn to take to the stage. The duo are joined by a bassist and another guitarist to complete the line-up. As with Pærish, the duo are here to defend their third album, Still Love. The band have a strong DIY flavour, producing their album almost entirely themselves. This is the American duo’s first appearance in France, and they’ve got a lot to live up to. Sunshine » takes the crowd straight into another dimension, the fuzz-saturated riff setting the tone right from the start. The crowd sang along to the chorus, then came « Dark Sky », which finished by warming up the room and seeing the first pogos form. Marshall Gallagher joked with the audience about their state of health and the jet lag they had experienced the day before. Based on the initial idea that the band had come to defend their album, it was a pleasant surprise to hear tracks from the first album, including « Dweeb » and « Swallow », with its Whammy-style distorted guitar parts that would delight any Tom Morello fan in the room. Even though the band were tired, their performance was perfect in all its imperfection. The result was a highly enjoyable diversity, ranging from calm passages to tracks like ‘Cigarette Two Step’, where the audience was just waiting for the contact and the fight. What better way to end the set than with the hit ‘Earth is a black hole’, bringing the Point Ephémère to its knees one last time?
And that’s how the evening came to an end, an evening I was personally looking forward to. For their first French date, Teenage Wrist managed to get everyone on the same wavelength and encourage the curious to take a little more interest in this future great band of the American shoegaze scene. The only downside was the absence of their little feat with Softcult, ‘Still Love’.
