Avant dernier report de cette année pour ma part et quel plaisir de pré clôturer cette année avec ma découverte de l’année 2023 : Slow Pulp. Première fois au Trix, et on ne peut que noter l’ambiance du lieu qui transpire la musique : salle de répétition au sous sol, petit café au rez de chaussée pour se reposer entre les sessions et salle de concert à l’étage. Avec une capacité de 432 personnes, la date est sold out pour cette soirée où l’indie Rock sera reine avec Packs et Slow Pulp.

On commence donc cette soirée avec le rock très chill de Packs, groupe canadien d’Ottawa. Les chansons sont d’une durée à faire rougir celles du hardcore mais nous sommes bien aux antipodes. La formation de ce soir est réduite à un duo, initialement Madeline Link (chant, guitare) est accompagnée de Noah O’Neil (basse), Dexter Nash (Guitare) et Shane Hooper (Batterie). Le duo est donc constitué de Link et Diego Parragué faisant office de claviériste, technicien informatique. Le show se voit donc très intimiste, Madeline venant nous proposer ses extraits du prochain album Melt the honey. Les deux premiers titres du concert sont très calmes, où on vient nous murmurer les paroles de chaque titre dans la mode du bedroom rock et pose déjà l’ambiance un peu candide qui va se véhiculer tout au long de la prestation. Nous avons senti les deux comparses très à l’aise avec le public, chaque 2-3 morceaux étaient entrecoupés d’échanges, de blagues avec le public sur le Canada, Ottawa (certaines personnes du public étant aussi canadiens)… Sur les deux derniers titres “Paige Machine” et “HFCS” nous avons pu avoir le nouveau son de Packs qui reste en évolution sur ce qui avait été proposé, se détachant l’intimiste et allant chercher des tons de guitare plus saturés et entraînants. Une vraie vague de fraîcheur et de découverte venue du Canada.
Suite à cette première partie, tout en douceur et humour c’est au tour de Slow Pulp de prendre place sur la scène du Trix. Révélation de mon année 2023, l’envie d’entendre tous ces sons en live est immense. Le groupe initialement formé de Teddy Matthews, Alex Leeds et Henry Stoehr s’est vu renforcé en 2017 de l’actuelle chanteuse Emily Massey. Le dernier album ayant été réalisé chez le père de cette dernière, il est normal de retrouver des sons très introspectifs comme “Doubt” ou “Yard” où le passage à voix et clavier permet de mettre en avant la voix d’Emily et toute la perspective du morceau. Le changement de duo à quintet s’entend directement via la puissance délivrée par les différents instruments et les sons très grunge 90 avec l’utilisation de fuzz comme sur “Worm”. Le public est conquis dès les premiers titres , l’énergie délivrée par le groupe permet de bien alterner avec les moments de balade comme sur “Fishes” , “New Horse”. L’ensemble de la prestation reste très planant, le groupe a été cherché dans toute sa discographie pour offrir au public européen tout ce qu’il avait pu ramener en variété sonore dans leurs valises. Sans surprise, la performance a été à la hauteur de nos attentes et nous a aussi permis de pouvoir plonger sur leurs autres albums performés durant le set. Pour terminer le show, Slow Pulp lance “High” chanson qui me les a fait découvrir via Mercedes de Softcult et termineront par “Montana”, le genre de chanson à mettre en automne avec un petit café.
C’est avec un plaisir non dissimulé que nous quittons le Trix après avoir pu profiter de la bonne découverte de Packs dont nous restons en observation pour la sortie du prochain album mais aussi finir l’année avec Slow Pulp qui repartent en tournée européenne l’été prochain. Sur une autre note, on ne pourra aussi que saluer l’appel à cesser le feu sur la devanture du Trix.

Second last report of the year for me, and what a pleasure it is to bring this year to a close with my discovery of 2023: Slow Pulp. First time at the Trix, and you can’t help but notice the ambience of the place, which oozes music: rehearsal room in the basement, little café on the ground floor for resting between sessions and concert room upstairs. With a capacity of 432, the date is sold out for this evening where indie rock will be king with Packs and Slow Pulp.

The evening kicks off with the chill rock of Packs, a Canadian band from Ottawa. The songs are as long as hardcore, but we’re on the opposite end of the spectrum. Initially, Madeline Link (vocals, guitar) is accompanied by Noah O’Neil (bass), Dexter Nash (guitar) and Shane Hooper (drums). The duo is made up of Link and Diego Parragué, who acts as keyboardist and computer technician. The show was a very intimate affair, with Madeline offering extracts from her forthcoming album Melt the Honey. The first two tracks of the concert were very quiet, with the lyrics whispered to us in bedroom rock fashion, setting the slightly candid mood that would carry through the rest of the show. The two musicians were very much at ease with the audience, and every 2-3 tracks were interspersed with exchanges and jokes about Canada and Ottawa (some of the audience were also Canadian)… On the last two tracks, « Paige Machine » and « HFCS », we were treated to Packs’ new sound, which is an evolution of what had been on offer, moving away from intimacy and towards more saturated, catchy guitar tones. A real wave of freshness and discovery from Canada.
After this first part, all sweetness and humour, it was Slow Pulp‘s turn to take to the stage at the Trix. They were the revelation of my year 2023, and I can’t wait to hear all their sounds live. Initially made up of Teddy Matthews, Alex Leeds and Henry Stoehr, the band was strengthened in 2017 by the addition of current singer Emily Massey. With the last album having been made at her father’s house, it’s only natural to find some very introspective sounds like ‘Doubt’ and ‘Yard’, where the vocal and keyboard passage highlights Emily‘s voice and the whole perspective of the track. The change from duo to quintet can be heard directly through the power delivered by the various instruments and the very grunge 90s sounds with the use of fuzz as on « Worm ». The audience was won over from the very first tracks, the energy delivered by the band alternating well with moments of balladry like on « Fishes » and « New Horse ». The whole performance remained very soaring, the band having searched through their entire discography to offer the European audience all the sonic variety they had brought back in their suitcases. Unsurprisingly, the performance lived up to our expectations, and also gave us a chance to delve into their other albums performed during the set. To round off the show, Slow Pulp launched into ‘High’, the song that introduced me to them via Mercedes from Softcult, and finished with ‘Montana’, the kind of song you’d want to play in the autumn with a cup of coffee.
It’s with undisguised pleasure that we leave the Trix, having enjoyed the discovery of Packs, whose next album we’ll be keeping an eye on, as well as finishing the year with Slow Pulp, who will be setting off on their European tour next summer. On another note, we can’t help but applaud the call to cease fire in front of the Trix.
