Depuis trente ans Therion nous livrent un metal symphonique d’excellente qualité qui s’étoffe et se diversifie d’album en album tout en gardant la pate de Christofer Johnsson, tête pensante du projet. Aujourd’hui le groupe nous propose de clôturer la trilogie Leviathan, commencée en 2021. C’est donc avec Leviathan III, disponible via Napalm Records depuis le 15 décembre que le groupe nous emmène une fois encore dans cet univers musical puissant et empli de sonorités qu’on adore retrouver.

Dès l’intro de « Ninkigal » on sait que le groupe veux nous attraper pour ne plus nous lâcher! Le mélange des voix saturées de Thomas Vikström et du chant lyrique envoutant de Lori Lewis nous rappelle en quelques secondes pourquoi ce groupe nous fascine tant depuis toutes ses années. Sur les morceaux suivants on retrouve le talent de Christian Vidal et Christofer Johnsson aux guitares, avec des riffs tous plus impactant les uns que les autres, avec en bonus de très belles parties de guitare acoustique sur « Ruler Of Tamag » où Lorie nous offre également un chant doux et onirique. Le voyage proposé par Therion sur cet album s’annonce déjà comme une nouvelle aventure musicale qui nous marquera à coup sûr. Le côté opératique du groupe est toujours aussi fort et donne à leurs composition une véritable identité qui emplit nos cœurs de joie. Evidemment Thomas et Lorie nous offrent aussi de belles prestations en chant clair tous les deux en nous montrant toute l’étendue de leurs capacités vocales.
Nalle “Grizzly” Påhlsson (basse) et Sami Karppinen (batterie) mêlent puissance et douceur avec un brio intact, une fois encore. On a autant envie d’headbanger que de laisser nos esprits divaguer aux sons doux de certaines parties des compositions. Chaque titre est une véritable aventure en soi, puisque le groupe n’hésite pas à faire alterner les ambiances pour une écoute toujours plus intense et prenante. « Maleficum » et « Baccanale » sont de véritables pépites qui se glissent aisément dans les meilleurs morceaux du groupe. Encore une fois le travail de chaque musicien et vocaliste fait de ces compositions de véritables oeuvres qu’on souhaite déjà se repasser en boucle.
On retrouve évidemment des thématiques similaires aux deux albums précédents et des sonorités communes, logique quand on sait que cet album est la fin d’une trilogie. On sent que le groupe avait encore de belles choses à nous raconter pour terminer son histoire, comme par exemple « What Was Lost Shall Be Lost No More ». Nos oreilles voyagent loin avec cet album avec ce mix toujours parfait entre sons opératiques majestueux et métal énergique à souhait. Puis l’imposant « Twilight Of The Gods » nous annonce la fin inéluctable de cette histoire avec une explosion musicale dont seule Therion ont le secret.
Avec Leviathan III, Therion nous livrent un album excellent qui nous conforte dans notre amour pour cette formation toujours étonnante. On a hâte de pouvoir découvrir tous ces morceaux en live lors de la future tournée du groupe qui passera par Bruges le 22 Février et par Paris le 25. On vous conseille vivement l’écoute de cet album ainsi que des précédents pour un voyage musical unique.

For the past thirty years, Therion have been delivering top-quality symphonic metal that has grown and diversified from album to album, all under the stewardship of Christofer Johnsson, the project’s mastermind. Today, the band brings the Leviathan trilogy, begun in 2021, to a close. With Leviathan III, available via Napalm Records since 15 December, the band once again take us into their powerful musical universe, full of the sounds we love so much.
Right from the intro to « Ninkigal », you know the band want to grab you and hold on for dear life! The mix of Thomas Vikström‘s saturated vocals and Lori Lewis‘s bewitching lyrical singing reminds us in a matter of seconds why this band has fascinated us so much over the years. On the following tracks, we find the talent of Christian Vidal and Christofer Johnsson on guitars, with riffs each more impactful than the last, with the bonus of some beautiful acoustic guitar parts on ‘Ruler Of Tamag’, where Lorie also offers us some soft, dreamy vocals. Therion’s journey on this album is already shaping up to be a new musical adventure that’s sure to leave its mark. The band’s operatic side is as strong as ever, giving their compositions a real identity that fills our hearts with joy. Of course, Thomas and Lorie also put in some fine performances on clean vocals, showing us the full extent of their vocal abilities.
Nalle ‘Grizzly’ Påhlsson (bass) and Sami Karppinen (drums) blend power and gentleness with unbroken brilliance, once again. You want to headbang as much as let your mind wander to the gentle sounds of certain parts of the compositions. Each track is a real adventure in itself, as the band don’t hesitate to alternate moods for an ever more intense and gripping listening experience. « Maleficum » and « Baccanale » are real nuggets that slip easily into the band’s best tracks. Once again, the work of each musician and vocalist makes these compositions true works of art that you’ll want to play over and over again.
There are obviously similar themes to the two previous albums and common sounds, which is logical when you consider that this album is the end of a trilogy. It’s clear that the band still had some great things to tell us to round off their story, such as ‘What Was Lost Shall Be Lost No More’. Our ears travel a long way with this album, with its ever-perfect mix of majestic operatic sounds and energetic metal. Then the imposing « Twilight Of The Gods » announces the inevitable end of this story with a musical explosion that only Therion have the secret to.
With Leviathan III, Therion have delivered an excellent album that confirms our love for this astonishing band. We can’t wait to discover all these tracks live on the band’s forthcoming tour, which will take in Bruges on 22nd of February and Paris on 25th February. We urge you to listen to this album and its predecessors for a unique musical journey.
