On continue les rattrapages de fin d’année avec le nouvel EP des américains de Sentinels. Après les avoir découvert à Birmingham en compagnie de Fit For An Autopsy en mai 2022, nous ne pouvions passer à côté de leur métalcore progressif. Intitulé In Limbo, cet EP est disponible depuis le 27 octobre 2023 via Sharptone Records.

Cet EP de six morceaux a la particularité de proposer seulement 3 titres différents, en version électrique, puis instrumental. Est-ce qu’il nous laisse le champ libre pour s’aventurer dans une session karaoké ? Ecoutons les versions originales pour estimer toute l’ampleur du travail pour les égaler. Avec « Nomadic », le métronome se déclenche et il ne faudra que quelques secondes pour que toute la puissance du groupe se décline dans une polyrythmie pour un beau moment de prog. La voix de Kenny Stroh est grasse et bien profonde à l’instar de leur confrère de brutal death. « In Limbo » se laissera guider par la batterie de Dave Rucki. Même si le morceau démarre comme une balade, détrompez-vous. Les riffs de guitares nous font des envolés très métalcore, ce qui se confirme par les premiers chants screamés. Les frappes s’accélérent à mesure que la voix s’intensifie dans le growl. Metalcore progressif nous dit-on ? Je qualifierai leur musique plutôt de mathcore progressif. Douleur, univers dévorant seront les thématiques pour cet EP écrasant. Bilan, je ne serai pas capable de poser ma voix sur ces très belles compositions, mais je veux bien accompagner par mouvement de nuques et air batterie à qui tente les vocals sur les versions instrumentales.
Sentinels proposent un très court EP, mais déjà parfaitement construit. Habitué des morceaux très prog avoisinant les 10 minutes, on ne peut qu’espèrer un album encore plus fourni dans les prochains mois. Un groupe à suivre à près !

We continue our end-of-year catch-up with the new EP from American band Sentinels. After discovering them in Birmingham with Fit For An Autopsy in May 2022, we couldn’t pass up the chance to hear some progressive metalcore. Entitled In Limbo, this EP has been available since October 27th, 2023 via Sharptone Records.
This six-track EP is unusual in that it features just 3 different tracks, first electric, then instrumental. Does this leave us free to venture into a karaoke session? Let’s have a listen to the original versions to appreciate just how much work it takes to match them. With ‘Nomadic’, the metronome kicks in and it only takes a few seconds for all the band’s power to be unleashed in a polyrhythmic, beautiful prog moment. Kenny Stroh‘s voice is fat and deep, just like their brutal death counterparts. « In Limbo » is guided by Dave Rucki‘s drums. Although the track starts out like a ballad, don’t be fooled. The guitar riffs take us on a very metalcore ride, which is confirmed by the first screamed vocals. The hits accelerate as the vocals intensify into a growl. Progressive metalcore, you ask? I’d describe their music more as progressive mathcore. Pain and an all-consuming universe are the themes of this overwhelming EP. In short, I won’t be able to put my voice down on these beautiful compositions, but I’m willing to accompany with neck movements and air drums whoever tries the vocals on the instrumental versions.
Sentinels offer a very short EP, but it’s already perfectly constructed. Used to very prog tracks clocking in at around 10 minutes, we can only hope for an even fuller album in the coming months. A band to keep an eye on!
