S’il y a une tradition presque aussi vieille que le rock lui-même, c’est l’exercice de s’attaquer aux reprises d’un autre groupe ! Si l’exercice est ancien, il est devenu régulier pour certains groupes comme Ghost qui produit depuis ses débuts un EP composé (partiellement ou totalement) de covers d’autres groupes et artistes très variés, adaptés à leur sauce entre chaque cycle d’album. Pour cette fin d’année 2023, et un an tout juste après la sortie de Blood & Glitter, les allemands de Lord of the Lost nous proposent de passer en revue des titres très variés, teintés de leur metal goth / indus signature, avec l’album de covers Weapons Of Mass Seduction, qui sera disponible via Napalm Records dès le 29 décembre prochain !

L’album commence par une reprise de “Shock To The System” de Billy Idol, et d’emblée il y a un constat très simple à faire : on sent le plaisir que le groupe prend à partager sa version du morceau à ses fans ! Les allemands réalisent la prouesse de dépoussiérer le morceau, déjà super entraînant, tout en gardant l’essence de base du morceau. Parties de synthé endiablées, grosses rythmiques et solos de guitare, et le chant si caractéristique de Chris Harms, entre clean et screams, tous les ingrédients pour une entrée en matière idéale sont là ! Le groupe nous présentera ensuite une reprise beaucoup plus moderne avec le titre “Unstoppable” de Sia (qui nous renverra tout de même en 2016 !), et comment là ne pas tomber amoureux de cette interprétation ? C’est simple, le groupe s’approprie tellement bien le morceau (mention spéciale à la voix vraiment magnifique) qu’on pourrait le croire taillé et écrit pour le groupe !
En poursuivant l’écoute de l’album, on sera gratifié d’une excellente reprise de “Turbo Lover” de Judas Priest, et si la suite de l’album ne réservait pas un lot de surprises beaucoup plus conséquent, j’aurais tenu là mon coup de coeur (mais il restera malgré tout mon second !). Le groupe prend tout ce qui fait du morceau un titre phare de la bande à Rob Halford : rythme entraînant, alterné entre un couplet assez progressif et un refrain terriblement prenant, tout en donnant une ampleur plus importante avec un son de guitare et des synthés plus massifs que l’originale ! Quand j’évoquais plus haut mon coup de cœur de l’album, c’est sur la reprise de Michael Jackson, “Give In To Me”, que mes oreilles ont littéralement été interpellées. On y retrouve là toute l’essence si caractéristique du morceau original, avec la mélodie de piano particulière et leadant complètement toute la progression du morceau, la ligne de chant dénotant complètement de ce que faisait le King of Pop habituellement (mais collant admirablement bien à la voix chaude de Chris Harms !), et même la partie solo de Slash pour mon bonheur auditif !
Après une année chargée en concerts pour la promotion de Blood & Glitter, Lord of the Lost nous propose donc un album à mettre dans les chaussettes de tous les (plus ou moins grands) enfants du hard rock que nous sommes, et qui saura rapidement s’intégrer à nos playlists de fêtes de fin d’année ! On prend plaisir à découvrir ou redécouvrir des titres d’horizons variés, interprétés par un groupe qu’on sent véritablement passionné dans la démarche. Billy Idol, SIA, Bronski Beat, Keane, The Pretty Reckless… on découvre une partie des artistes qui ont marqué le groupe et permis de forger leur qui ne s’arrête ni aux normes musicales, ni aux préjugés quels qu’ils soient.

If there’s one tradition that’s almost as old as rock itself, it’s the exercise of tackling another band’s covers! While the exercise is an old one, it has become a regular occurrence for certain bands such as Ghost, who have been producing EPs since their inception made up (in part or in whole) of covers by a wide variety of other bands and artists, adapted to their own taste between each album cycle. As 2023 draws to a close, and just a year after the release of Blood & Glitter, Germany’s Lord of the Lost are offering us a review of a wide variety of tracks, tinged with their signature goth/indus metal, with the covers album Weapons Of Mass Seduction, which will be available via Napalm Records from the 29th of December!
The album opens with a cover of Billy Idol‘s « Shock To The System », and from the outset it’s easy to see how much the band enjoy sharing their version of the song with their fans! The Germans pull off the feat of dusting off the already super catchy track, while retaining the basic essence of the song. With frenzied synth parts, big rhythms and guitar solos, and Chris Harms‘ characteristic vocals, between clean and screams, all the ingredients are there for an ideal start! The band then present a much more modern cover of Sia‘s ‘Unstoppable’ (which takes us back to 2016!), and how can you not fall in love with this interpretation? It’s simple, the band make the song their own so well (with a special mention for the truly magnificent vocals) that you’d think it was written for the band!
The album continues with an excellent cover of Judas Priest‘s « Turbo Lover », and if the rest of the album didn’t hold a whole lot more surprises, I’d have had my favourite song (but it’s still my second favourite!). The band take everything that makes the song one of Rob Halford‘s flagship tracks: a catchy rhythm, alternating between a fairly progressive verse and a terribly catchy chorus, all the while giving the song a bigger scope with a more massive guitar sound and synths than the original! When I mentioned above my favourite track on the album, it was the Michael Jackson cover, ‘Give In To Me’, that literally caught my ears. It’s got all the essence of the original song, with the distinctive piano melody leading the whole progression of the track, the vocal line completely different from what the King of Pop used to do (but which fits Chris Harms‘ warm voice admirably!), and even Slash‘s solo part to my auditive delight!
After a busy year of concerts to promote Blood & Glitter, Lord of the Lost have come up with an album that will be sure to get into the socks of every (more or less) grown-up child of hard rock, and which will quickly become part of our end-of-year festive playlists! You’ll enjoy discovering or rediscovering songs from a wide range of backgrounds, performed by a band that you can feel is genuinely passionate about what they do. Billy Idol, Sia, Bronski Beat, Keane, The Pretty Reckless… you’ll discover some of the artists who have left their mark on the band, helping them to forge their own sound, which is free from musical norms and prejudices of any kind.
