C’est avec le pre-IeperFest que nous arrivons au dernier concert pour clôturer cette année 2023 riche pour le média. Nous arrivons donc au Vort’n Vis bar/salle de concert engagé d’Ypres. La bonne surprise vient de l’aspect salle où l’année dernière, la partie bar était transformée en mini salle de concert. Cette année nous avons le droit à l’arrière salle plus grande qui annonce déjà un gain de visibilité sur la date. Pour finir cette année en beauté nous aurons une date assez tournée Beatdown avec Soul Blame, Weak Link et Game Changer. La surprise réside plutôt sur la participation de Drops qui viennent se poser comme petit ovni de la soirée. Ieperfest oblige la date est engagée vegan, de ce fait les bénéfices de la date sont reversés à De Zonnegloed, un sanctuaire pour les animaux sauvages.

Nouveau groupe de la scène Belge où on peut retrouver Emilien de l’association Taste Of Mind. Soul Blame séduit par son originalité dans la formation même du groupe. C’est ainsi que nous nous retrouvons avec deux chanteurs ce qui reste assez atypiques sur la scène hardcore. Avec une démo sortie courant 2023, nous avons déjà hâte d’entendre “Cheap Talk” qui cristallise bien l’identité du groupe, pas de chichi, pas de pitié. Les riffs sont violents et le public répond présent pour mosher même si on sent une certaine retenue du début de soirée. Les voix des deux chanteurs sont bien réparties sur les différents titres et donnent une belle dimension et variété dans le style beatdown.
Le défi de cette soirée attend Drops à savoir venir chercher et faire bouger une date full beatdown. Le choix a été fait pour cette date de garder la même setlist qu’au concert à La Bulle début décembre. Comme dit précédemment, être le seul groupe avec des parties où le two step fait beaucoup plus de place aux breaks relevait du défi sur cette date. Res a fait l’effort de parler durant tout le set en anglais afin de se faire comprendre par la salle et de pouvoir transmettre ses valeurs et messages. Le hardcore positif de Drops n’a malheureusement pas pris comme prévu ce soir malgré la descente de Ludovic dans le pit pour venir chauffer le public avec des side to side. Le cover de Trapped under Ice a su raviver l’agressivité du public sans pour autant le faire passer à un stade supérieur. La prestation du quintet a été toute aussi bonne que leurs précédentes, l’ambiance amenée n’a peut être pas été à la hauteur mais ils ont su marquer l’esprit d’un public plus spectateur les nommant comme une belle découverte de la soirée.
On attaque la deuxième moitié de la soirée et clairement l’ambiance a changé. Le monde est arrivé, comme sur chaque date hardcore, les potes viennent se soutenir entre eux et ça n’a pas manqué pour les gantois de Weak Link. Monté en force depuis leur dernier album Means to an End sorti en septembre 2023, le groupe a besoin de faire ses preuves en live et le moins qu’on puisse dire c’est qu’ils ont mis tout le monde d’accord. Fouke est très expressif dans ses chants et rentre par moment en transe avec les riffs. Dans certaines tonalités on peut entendre l’influence metalcore apportée aux projets sur des titres comme “Destroyed”. Le groupe nous fournit un hardcore très énervé qui ravit tous les moshers de la salle surtout sur le titre “Paralysed Memories” qui melent riffs percutants et chants venant lachés toute la colère enflouée. Après un set rempli d’énergie, on comprend mieux la montée chez nos voisins belges de ce groupe que nous pourrons retrouver au EuroCore et au IeperFest cet été.
Game Changer n’a plus rien à prouver sur la scène belge, avec Feverchild le groupe fait partie des noms qui nous viennent directement en parlant de la scene hardcore Belge. Les groupe est formé notamment avec une tête bien connue de la scène à savoir Davy, ex xViciousX et Animal Club, qui mène d’une main de maître le groupe. Avec une démo et un split avec Minded Fury, c’est en live que le groupe prend toute son ampleur avec le déferlement d’énergie qu’envoie le groupe durant tout ce set court mais intense. Dès l’intro, toute la salle rentre en ébullition quand il faut crier “Game Changer ! “ à l’unisson quand Davy tend le bâton de parole au public. Après un début de set bien lourd, le groupe prend le temps de remercier tout le monde d’être venu et fait même une aparté en français pour le public venu de France dont on apprécie le geste. On nous présente aussi le nouveau guitariste qui a su assurer le show pour une première. Le concert se poursuit avec autant d’intensité, le groupe fait même monter sur scène Pierre de Broken Ankles sur “Suffering”. Pour finir le set, nous avons le droit à deux covers qui ont su ravir les fans venus ce soir à Ypres.
Cet avant (winter?) Ieperfest a été un vrai plaisir pour tous les spectateurs, programmation trés orientée beatdown même si le hardcore positif de Drops a su ramener de la diversité durant cette soirée. Nous apprécierons aussi le choix de la salle qui s’aligne avec les valeurs défendues par le festival. Une très belle soirée qui vient clôturer cette saison 2023 des concerts pour Sounding Shivers. Prochain rendez vous pour le Ieperfest, le Winter Ieperfest avec notamment les noyellois de Broken Ankles.

It’s with the pre-IeperFest that we arrive at the last concert to close this rich year of 2023 for the media. And so we arrive at the Vort’n Vis bar/engaged concert venue in Ieper. Last year, the bar was transformed into a mini concert hall. This year we’re treated to a bigger back room, which means we’ll be able to get a better view of the date. To round off the year in style, we’ve got a Beatdown date with Soul Blame, Weak Link and Game Changer. The surprise, however, will be the appearance of Drops, who will be the UFO of the evening. As Ieperfest is committed to veganism, all proceeds from the event will go to De Zonnegloed, a sanctuary for wild animals.

A new band on the Belgian scene, featuring Emilien from the Taste Of Mind association. Soul Blame‘s originality lies in the band’s formation. We find ourselves with two singers, which is quite atypical on the hardcore scene. With a demo due for release in 2023, we can’t wait to hear ‘Cheap Talk’, which epitomises the band’s identity: no fuss, no mercy. The riffs are violent and the audience is there to mosher, even if there’s a hint of restraint at the start of the evening. The vocals of the two singers are well distributed across the tracks, adding a nice dimension and variety to the beatdown style.
The challenge for Drops this evening is to come and rock a full beatdown date. The choice was made to keep the same setlist for this date as for the concert at La Bulle in early December. As we said earlier, being the only band with parts where the two-step makes much more room for breaks was quite a challenge on this date. Res made the effort to speak in English throughout their set to make themselves understood by the crowd and convey their values and messages. Unfortunately, Drops‘ positive hardcore didn’t take as well as expected this evening, despite Ludovic‘s descent into the pit to warm up the crowd with some side-to-side. The cover of Trapped under Ice rekindled the crowd’s aggression without taking it to the next level. The quintet’s performance was just as good as their previous ones, although the atmosphere may not have been up to scratch, but they left a lasting impression on a more spectator-orientated audience, making them one of the evening’s great discoveries.
As we entered the second half of the evening, the atmosphere had clearly changed. As on every hardcore date, the world has arrived and the mates have come to support each other, and there’s been no shortage of that for Ghent’s Weak Link. Having gone from strength to strength since their last album, Means to an End, released in September 2023, the band need to prove themselves live, and the least we can say is that they put everyone in agreement. Fouke‘s vocals are very expressive and at times he goes into a trance with the riffs. In certain keys you can hear the metalcore influence brought to the projects on tracks like ‘Destroyed’. The band’s energetic hardcore is a real crowd-pleaser, especially on the track « Paralysed Memories », which combines hard-hitting riffs with vocals that let out all the swollen anger. After a set packed with energy, it’s easy to see why this band have made the move to our Belgian neighbours, and we’ll be seeing them at EuroCore and IeperFest this summer.
Along with Feverchild, Game Changer have nothing left to prove on the Belgian hardcore scene. The band’s frontman is Davy, ex-xViciousX and Animal Club, and he leads the band with a masterful hand. With a demo and a split with Minded Fury, it’s live that the band really comes into its own, with a surge of energy throughout their short but intense set. Right from the intro, the whole room erupts into a frenzy as they shout « Game Changer! « in unison as Davy hands the talking stick to the audience. After a heavy start to the set, the band take the time to thank everyone for coming and even make an aside in French for the audience from France, whose gesture is much appreciated. We were also introduced to the new guitarist, who put on a great show for the first time. The concert continued with just as much intensity, and the band even brought Pierre from Broken Ankles on stage on « Suffering ». To finish the set, we were treated to two covers that delighted the fans who had come to Ieper this evening.
This pre (winter?) Ieperfest was a real pleasure for all the spectators, with a very beatdown-oriented line-up, even if Drops‘ positive hardcore brought some diversity to the evening. We also appreciate the choice of venue, which is in line with the values defended by the festival. A great evening to round off the 2023 season of concerts for Sounding Shivers. Next up for the Ieperfest, the Winter Ieperfest with, among others, Noyelles’ Broken Ankles.
