Fin 2018, Casey annonçaient leur séparation après une tournée l’année suivante. Les gallois ont finalement annoncé fin 2022 revenir sur le devant de la scène. Après deux titres ayant signé leur retour, le groupe annonce un nouvel album qui prend la suite de Where I Go When I Am Sleeping sorti en 2018. Intitulé How To Disappear, il sera disponible dès le 12 janvier via Hassle Records. Autant vous le dire tout de suite, Casey sont dans la liste de nos groupes phares, donc les retrouver pour un nouvel album après avoir assisté à leur concert d’adieu à Cardiff est un plaisir total.

L’intro douce de « Unique Lights » nous plonge doucement dans l’album avec les belles napes de guitares de Liam Torrance et Toby Evans. On retrouve déjà dans ce premier titre tout ce qui fait qu’on aime le groupe gallois, avec en premier lieu une émotion palpable servie par le voix magnifique de Tom Weaver. Le groupe n’hésite pas à aller plonger dans différents genres dans sa musique et on alterne entre purs morceaux dignes des deux albums précédents avec des titres allant chercher vers des styles plus étonnants comme le post rock. Le duo basse/batterie formé par Adam Smith et Max Nicolai sait se faire discret quand il le faut, mais livre tout au long de l’album une performance excellente qui ne cesse de surprendre titre après titre. Le groupe a grandi en cinq ans et ça se sent dans des compositions comme « Sanctimonious » ou « Selah ». On sent toujours cette envie de nous émouvoir mais avec une vision sur les évènements dépeint dans les textes peut être un peu moins candide.
Le single « Bite Through My Tongue » nous rappelle les plus belles heures du groupe avec ce mélange habile entre morceau entrainant et émotion brute servie par un Tom en état de grâce. La force de Casey avait été, en tout juste deux albums, de se forger une place de choix dans la scène hardcore mélodique européenne. Et ce nouvel album les élève encore plus haut avec des pépites comme « Those That I’m Survived By » ou encore « Space Between ». On imagine bien ces morceaux être repris en chœur par les fans lors des prochaines tournées de la formation galloise. La fusion entre les musiciens est totale et nous permet de profiter pleinement du travail de haute volée proposé sur cette nouvelle sortie. Après le très bon « Blush », il est déjà temps du dernier titre. Mais comme au début de l’album, le groupe nous propose un morceau plus long, qui montre l’envie des cinq gallois de nous en mettre plein la vue jusqu’à la dernier seconde.
Avec How To Disappear, Casey signent un retour à leur tout meilleur. On retrouve tout ce qui nous a toujours conquis dans la formation galloise avec en bonus quelques petites sonorités nouvelles qui collent parfaitement à l’univers du groupe. Une vraie réussite qui fait démarrer l’année 2024 de la plus belle des manières. Autant vous dire qu’on a hâte de retrouver le groupe sur scène en avril prochain.

At the end of 2018, Casey announced their separation after touring the following year. At the end of 2022, the Welsh band finally announced their return to the forefront of the music scene. Following two comeback tracks, the band have announced a new album, the follow-up to 2018’s Where I Go When I Am Sleeping. Entitled How To Disappear, it will be available from 12 January via Hassle Records. I might as well tell you straight away, Casey are on our list of flagship bands, so reuniting with them for a new album after attending their farewell gig in Cardiff is a total pleasure.
The gentle intro to « Unique Lights » plunges us gently into the album with the beautiful guitar strums of Liam Torrance and Toby Evans. This first track has everything that makes the Welsh band so popular, starting with the palpable emotion of Tom Weaver‘s magnificent vocals. The band don’t hesitate to delve into different genres in their music, alternating between pure tracks worthy of the two previous albums and more surprising styles such as post rock. The bass/drums duo of Adam Smith and Max Nicolai are discreet when they need to be, but deliver an excellent performance throughout the album that never ceases to surprise track after track. The band have grown up in five years, and you can feel it in compositions like ‘Sanctimonious’ and ‘Selah’. You can still feel their desire to move you, but their vision of the events depicted in the lyrics is perhaps a little less candid.
The single « Bite Through My Tongue » is a reminder of the band’s heyday, with its skilful blend of catchy tunes and raw emotion served up by a Tom in a state of grace. Casey‘s strength has been to carve out a place for themselves on the European melodic hardcore scene in just two albums. And this new album raises them even higher, with nuggets like ‘Those That I’m Survived By’ and ‘Space Between’. It’s easy to imagine fans singing along to these tracks on the Welsh band’s forthcoming tours. The fusion between the musicians is total, allowing us to take full advantage of the high-flying work on this new release. After the very good ‘Blush’, it’s already time for the final track. But as at the beginning of the album, the band offer us a longer track, which shows the desire of the five Welshmen to blow our minds right up to the last second.
With How To Disappear, Casey are back at their very best. We find everything we’ve always loved about the Welsh band, with the added bonus of a few new sounds that fit in perfectly with the band’s universe. It’s a real success story, and a great way to kick off 2024. And we can’t wait to see the band live on stage again next April.
