Les supergroupes sont récurrents dans le monde de la musique, tant il n’est pas rare de voir des artistes de groupes différents vouloir collaborer. Pourtant, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise à l’annonce de l’album dont je vais vous parler ! Prenez le meilleur du hard rock des années 80, avec deux pointures du milieu en la personne de Jack Russell (chanteur de Great White) et Tracii Guns (guitariste de L.A Guns, qui donnera naissance suite à sa fusion avec Hollywood Rose… à Guns N’ Roses !) et vous obtiendrez une ôde 100% authentique et inspirée à ce qui se fait de mieux dans le hard rock. Tout cela est à retrouver sur l’album Medusa, à paraître le 12 janvier 2024 chez Frontiers Music.

On ouvre tout de suite les hostilités avec “Next In Line”, morceau ultra feelgood qui expose dès les premières secondes le talent des deux musiciens : Tracii Guns démontre pourquoi il est encore aujourd’hui l’un des meilleurs guitaristes du circuit hard rock en enchaînant riffs aux accents hard / blues rock et solos acérés, et Jack Russell nous gratifie de sa meilleure voix tout au long du morceau, nous donnant rapidement envie de reprendre en choeur ce “Next In Line”. Le ton est durcit sur “Tell Me Why”, ce qui nous permet de retrouver la versatilité que l’on connaît à Tracii Guns, avec un morceau plus rapide qui fait rapidement pensé à ce qu’il à pu faire avec Brides Of Destruction ou avec L.A Guns (notamment sur “Speed”). Pour une bouffée de riffs frais, on s’oriente vers “Where I Belong” qui se pose comme un autre morceau feelgood à souhait, avec des nappes de synthé très présentes qui viennent souligner à merveille la guitare et apporter une couleur très californienne au tout (on s’imagine sous le soleil et les palmiers !).
“Living a Lie” proposera la première ballade de l’album, dans un morceau qui plaira très certainement aux fans de la carrière solo de Sebastian Bach. On retrouve là tout ce qui fait d’une power-ballade un classique : intro acoustique infusée de mélancolie, refrain plus hard, et un solo démentiel ! Le morceau éponyme “Medusa” se révélera être mon coup de coeur de l’album, avec un riff vraiment original et avec la touche si personnelle que l’on connaît à Tracii Guns. Le morceau est particulièrement mélancolique une nouvelle fois, avec un arpège qui se poursuit tout le long des couplets qui amène une progression vraiment intéressante et prenante au morceau. L’album se conclut sur deux morceaux plus classiques mais véritablement efficaces pour conclure un album de hard rock : “Back Into Your Arms Again” et “I Want You” proposent tout ce que les deux comparses font de mieux, des riffs accrocheurs, des solos rafraîchissants et des lyrics qui rentrent en tête dès la première écoute !
Nul doute, 2024 s’ouvrira de la meilleure des manières dès le 12 janvier avec la sortie de Medusa, qui est une vraie pépite à mettre entre toutes les mains d’amateurs de hard rock. Très accessible, il conviendra aussi aux personnes qui voudraient découvrir deux des plus grandes pointures du hard 80s. On soulignera la volonté des deux musiciens de proposer des compositions originales, qui sans chercher à révolutionner le genre, exposent ce qu’il s’y fait de mieux et nous apporte cargaison de classiques pendant 46 minutes d’écoute !

But I was surprised when the album I’m about to talk about was announced! Take the best of 80s hard rock, with two of the best in the business in Jack Russell (lead singer of Great White) and Tracii Guns (guitarist for L.A Guns, who went on to merge with Hollywood Rose… to form Guns N’ Roses!) and you’ve got a 100% authentic and inspired ode to the best in hard rock. All this can be found on the album Medusa, to be released on 12 January 2024 by Frontiers Music.
We get the ball rolling straight away with « Next In Line », an ultra feelgood track that showcases the talent of the two musicians from the very first seconds: Tracii Guns proves why he’s still one of the best guitarists on the hard rock circuit with a succession of hard/blues rock riffs and sharp solos, and Jack Russell gives us his best vocal performance of the whole track, making us want to sing along to « Next In Line ». The tone hardens on ‘Tell Me Why’, bringing back Tracii Guns‘ familiar versatility, with a faster track that quickly brings to mind his work with Brides Of Destruction and L.A Guns (particularly on ‘Speed’). For a breath of fresh riffs, we turn to « Where I Belong », another feelgood track, with a strong synth backing that perfectly underlines the guitar and gives the whole thing a very Californian feel (you can imagine yourself under the sun and palm trees!).
« Living a Lie » features the album’s first ballad, in a track sure to please fans of Sebastian Bach‘s solo career. It has everything that makes a power ballad a classic: a melancholy-infused acoustic intro, a harder-edged chorus and an insane solo! The eponymous ‘Medusa’ proved to be my favourite track of the album, with a truly original riff and the trademark Tracii Guns touch. The track is particularly melancholy once again, with an arpeggio that continues throughout the verses, giving the song a really interesting and gripping progression. The album concludes with two more classic but truly effective tracks to round off a hard rock album: « Back Into Your Arms Again » and « I Want You » offer everything the two musicians do best: catchy riffs, refreshing solos and lyrics that get stuck in your head from the first listen!
There’s no doubt that 2024 will get off to the best possible start on 12 January with the release of Medusa, a real nugget for all hard rock fans. Highly accessible, it will also suit those who want to discover two of the greatest names in 80s hard rock. It’s worth highlighting the two musicians’ determination to offer original compositions, which without seeking to revolutionise the genre, showcase the best that’s out there and bring us a boatload of classics for 46 minutes of listening!
